      I fill you but paying cash for any car over 100k that is an imediate appreciable collector item is a bad investment ...take this advice from some who has bought more than 20 new cars in the 8 years and incurred the bitch of depreciation, 6 of those vehicles being over 100k...believe me smart people lease cars that are ridiculously expensive...enjoy them for a few years and go to the next one...if you love it you always have the option to buy...more than likely after two years something else will have caught your attention ...maybe I just like cars too much...and I have really paid out the ass for it...just got into leasing , wish I would've been swapping and switching because the whole I've been paying anyway

    Bob, this was an excellent video report. From experience with a beautiful '73 Silver Shadow, I agree with every word, especially your depreciation and financial comments. Depreciation is not a friend if you have to finance any part of this adventure. The truth is you are getting much more value than you spent because unlike an idle boat or airplane, you have a superb automobile that is for all practical purposes almost new- and you use it for many hours every day. Therefore your true cost per owner use hour is excellent.
    The daily enjoyment factor of this car is immense, and I bet every time you sit down behind the wheel and look up and down the dash and over the hood, you smile. This puts your spirit at peace, and as a billionaire once said to me, "No matter what happens in the boardroom, I never have a bad day when I own a RR."
    As for the interesting experiences you have had, I have had similar ones. Sometimes people smile and wave, other times they scowl and give me the finger.
    Once a rather plainly dressed young man came up to me in a parking lot with his head down. In a nervous voice, he told me he would like to stand in front of my RR Shadow to propose to his girlfriend. She was also plainly dressed with little makeup and no jewelry to speak of. She was also apparently nervous and embarrassed. I told the young man to get his girlfriend and get in the back seat, and I would take them for a little drive and he could propose while we were riding along the beach. Needless to say, he was stunned and almost speechless, and so was she. Everything unfolded perfectly, and they had an engagement memory well beyond their wildest expectations. I had a delightful time, and although I never saw them again, I know my RR played a special role in the lives of two young folks just starting out together.
    After having the car for a while, I came to realize I was not the owner, I was the trustee and curator.
    Bob, it is clear you consider yourself the trustee and curator of this magnificent Phantom. I look forward to seeing more superb videos like this one.

      Charles Butler you are a liar. You have never owned a RR. I have owned I think 10. All RR’s constantly have to be taken to the mechanic by rollback. They are too unreliable for trips and barely reliable enough for city driving no matter what year. So it’s obvious you don’t have or had a RR, and most likely don’t even know anyone that owns one.

      e ennis Hilarious. I have a 2020 Phantom, and a 2019 wraith currently, and have had many in the past. Charles had a very old model- those were easy to work on and reliable- with the new ones I own, after 10k miles I trade it in and don’t have to deal with the issues. They truly are wonderful cars.

  • @Chthonian121
    @Chthonian121 Před 4 lety +6

    Great video Bob! Couple of points I wanted to add to this video since my much richer than me brother owns an older phantom and these are his experiences with them:
    1. You basically have to buy one with quality aftermarket rims on (That are not ridiculously big) to avoid the rim job all these cars need. You just gotta hope the previous owner put tasteful aftermarket rims on it or just suck it up and just drive it having rims you don't like the look of. My brother was lucky he bought one with 22 inch Forgiato Concavo's. Very beautiful rims, very high quality too, and they match the car.
    2. You can get away with using BMW 760 parts but the reality is, no one is going to want to work on a rolls royce. Most places that are not major metropolitan cities and do not have a fair amount of luxury (and even ultra-luxury) cars will not have private mechanics that would be willing to work on a Phantom. Most of them not only never worked on one before, most of them never even seen one before. This is a problem my brother experienced living in Tuscon, AZ. He takes it to a very expensive private mechanic (one of the only people in Tuscon that knows about RR) to have his car worked on. Most people don't know how to work on their cars so this is going to be a problem for them.
    3. Although most Phantoms are very well built and pretty reliable, they EAT brakes. Brake jobs are gonna cost alot if you daily drive them. The other mechanical stuff are not too bad considering you can find a BMW part for them and they are not too labor-intensive since there is so much room to work on these cars.
    4. Cosmetic parts are going to cost ALOT. If there is a broken moulding, missing interior pieces, or anything damaged you want to replace, good luck. It's a pain in the ass to find the parts on eBay and you're going to pay alot of money because those parts are really rare outside the rolls royce dealership. Don't buy a phantom that needs cosmetic work.

    I had a similar type of experience about 15 years ago. I had taken my car to a local garage to have some minor work done. When I when to pick the car up the keys were missing and the person I had been dealing with was nowhere to be found. It was agreed that I would be billed for the work and the car released to me. I drove home and within 1/2 hr my car was gone. The garage had taken the car until I paid the bill (it was only £50). The Police where helpful and managed to arrange the return of my vehicle. However the garage had retained the car manuals and service history again as a way of forcing a payment. It took a few weeks and after to and fro with one of the directors before the manuals etc were returned to me. Through other dealings with the same business I came to the conclusion that they were inherently dishonest and some of their work was pretty poor. It's a lesson learned that we have to fully check out a garage and make sure they are reputable before letting them loose on a vehicle.

    nice thing RR did is that they kept the design trough the years;
    for a car that is all about the image, for it to be outdated as soon as the new model arrives would be a shame;
    you can proudly sit in an early phantom right next to a new one, but cant do the same in similar years S classes

    I think being owned by BMW makes it much easier for people to afford the maintenance, assuming they can afford the initial purchase price.

      BMW parts or not, the maintenance on this thing will be anything but cheap.

    As a young man, my goal was not to own one, but to drive one. Back in the 80's or was it the 90's, I got to drive two. one was quite old, and very sweet. The guy that had it in the shop paid 2500 dollars for it, spent another 2500 having it gone through maintenance wise, so for 5 K he had a very sweet ride indeed. The other one was what was then a newer model. It was nice but not nearly what the old one was. That's how I got to drive a lot of cars I would never have driven otherwise, I went to work as a detailer for a place that worked on and sold your higher end cars. I didn't stay there long, but I fulfilled my goals and then some,

      @@rodneyfosdick3293 If only I could buy one like that older one I drove... I certainly would. In a heartbeat. I don't want any of the later models actually made by VW and then BMW. Tho parts are cheaper since the engines were not actually rolls engines. Hey, do you know of Fearless Fosdick? Comic character done by the same guy that did Lil' Abner cartoon strip?
