- Neon Genesis Evangelion review for Nintendo 64. Also referred to as Neon Genesis Evangelion 64 is a 1999 fighting video game released for the Nintendo 64 in Japan by Bandai. It is based on the Gainax anime series of the same name and its 1997 film that serves as its conclusion, The End of Evangeliono
The Japanese Eye is a series where i will be taking japanese exclusive N64 games and playing them through the eyes of a western gamer. I will try to let you know if i think the game can be played with no knowledge of japanese and if the game is any fun!
The presentation is shockingly good for the N64.
It's almost too good for the N64.
The game has voice acting and anime clips from the series. The graphics look great. I was shocked that the robot looks just like it did on the show. The graphics are 3D cell shaded, which really makes the game come to life
RAQUAAHWA TheCodedtestament >robot
Its not a fucking robot, it has blood and stuff
It wasn't celshaded. Lighting was just extremely limited on N64. That kind of lighting variation wasn't possible until the next console generation. Instead what you're seeing is simply smart texture design.
this has to be the best looking and best made n64 game available, holy shit I didnt even know this existed
The US never gets cool shit like this....
same here in england :( just look at how many NES games we didn't get and how awesome some of them were
True, but you guys got some of the best Master System games (Golden Ax Warrior comes to mind) that never saw that light of day here. So we can consider that even :P
True! Just a shame we only hot 4 n64 pal exclusives
***** What were the Pal n64 exclusives and were they any good?
Taz express, f1, premier manager 64 and I forget the 4th but they are all average at best
i remember when this got annonced me and my brother wanted to play it it but sadly it never made it over here, it looks REALLY good u never see that much detail on N64 polygons from third party developers
I've heard that when it goes to the End of Evangelion route the ending in the N64 games is less darker and more of an happier tone than the film ending.
Nashrino i won't spoil it for you :)
I Like this Game and i finish him in all Dificulties!
I only had the chance to play this game via emulation... It's incredible advanced for the N64... really impressive graphics and models for the time.
THIS game, despite having full motion like video, as well as the voice action and cutscenes, used a 96 megabit cartridge!
Tis a great game!
There really needs to be an Evangelion game on the PS4...
There's always Super Robot Wars.
You have 100ft Robot Golf
DenotheFreak Here’s to hoping Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will give us a next gen game.

Awesome review man Neon Genesis Evangelion is by far one of the greatest and most memorable animes i have ever seen. You would not believe how delighted i was when i found out my favorite game reviewer did a review on the evangelion n64 game. As always keep up the great work man.
thank you man, glad there are fans who've found this review :)
I flipped out so bad while playing the game when I got to the cut scene at 11:10. Remarkably similar to the anime and the beautifully sculpted 3d model was the icing on the cake.
Well damn, I am in the middle of this anime atm. I might need to try this out via my Everdrive 64 and Ultra HDMI modded N64! These visuals are just stunning!
Hope you enjoy it!
Love the Taka theme you used in the intro.
Taka rocks :-)
I had absolutely no idea that this game was even made until I saw a longplay on it. This just blows my mind. Due to my mom's budget, I wasn't able to get this j-exclusive game on the actual cartridge. I know a rom will do, though. Plus, I have a US N64.
It's a shame none of the Evangelion games were released outside of Japan. As far as I know the only Evangelion-related game in the US is some pretty bad DOOM wad.

I heard most Eva games are awful anyway.
"you'll probably gonna be able to finish the game in the first playthrough" nah its kinda hard maybe its just because I didn't understood the controls fully so thank you for reminding me that I should check out the tutorials cuz I didn't even realised that I should actually do it
The controls vary for most stages so as soon as you get how they work it makes the game much more playable 👍
@@n64glennplant ye ik but I did not found any guides on controls BUT I understood like 40 or maybe 60% of the controls I just need to know how to do the grabbing move and how to run and ye I guess I will get it
I believe this is what consoles games should be like. Pushing the console past its limits and making something impressive. The advantage is that everyone is using the same system. But with these different companies competing and the fact that a PC port will always be surperior makes consoles pointless. Developers keep making multiplatform games which is a cheap way of making more money and makes it harder to make technically impressive games unless they're on PC. Naughty Dog and Nintendo are the only companies that make exclusives and actually push their consoles past their limits.
Still can't believe no English fan translation of this Game yet unlike Getter Love, Wonder Project J2, Custom Robo or the Evangelion Dreamcast games. Greeting from México
It’s something to do with how text is coded into the game….some types are super easy character swaps and others are full image edits so naturally considerably harder from what I know
The graphics easily beat majority of Playstation games.
doesnt beat Tobal 2 though
The N64 was more powerful, Nintendo hurt themselves by not using CD’s
This is true for most N64 games, at least 1st party ones. The PlayStation is only 32 bit, while the N64 is, well... You know.
crap, I found this game at a book off in japan for about 2500 yen with box, but I was not sure so I passed.
“You should watch the anime, now let me spoil the frack out of it!”
Exactly!
The graphics and animations are great.
+187onaPigeon oh yeah I think they are awesome too
I downloaded the rom for this a few years ago but I couldn't beat the second level because I needed analog controls.....
Your channel is the best!
Thank you eduardo
@@n64glennplant You should make a video about the best unreleased games... Dinosaur Planet looks fab. Another great video would be about the shooters like Star Soldier, Star Fox, Space Invaders and Dezaemon 3D!
To this day I find this game one of the most amazing technical marvels in the N64.
It's amazing how they managed to design the game to reproduce the anime in an uncanny way, mixing 2d with 3d and with lots of high detail 3d models and model deformation to make the game match the scenes.
It's so rare to see cutscenes in the N64, even more seeing them in real-time with voice acting.
Really feels like they used everything the N64 could do to muster the game's presentation.
When I do get this game, it will probably become one of my favorite N64 games. I'm huge fan of Evangelion AND games that vary play style between levels, so this game is really appealing to me. Also, END OF EVA levels? I mean, it's one of my dreams to control the MPEVA vs Asuka fight in a video game, so that will be amazing.
I've been wanting this game forever, but have forgotten about it for a while since I have no way of playing Japanese games. I will get it at some point, though. I loved the anime and I definitely need to watch it again and play this game.
if you have an N64 that isn't Japanese just unscrew the back of the cartridge and screw whatever reason you have back and it will fit and play look it up
Why wasn’t this ever introduced to the western market? God we missed such a gem.
Basically Space Ace with Edgelord Giant Robots
TAKA Michinoku Theme at the start.
I wish this game would have had a larger release. I really want to play this game now. This was a spectacular review Glenn! Great work as usual!
This reminds me of Power Rangers for Sega Mega CD, where all you did was watch scenes from the series and input the right button commands at the right time. This looks infinitely better and is probably more interesting story-wise though.
Marco Wolken how could any tale trump the lore of Power Rangers
I remember importing this game when I was younger. It didn't fit in the N64. I hd to disarm the N64 and then remove a plastic thing that goes around the cartridge slot and prevents import games to fit in, in order to let the cart fit in. Afterwards, import games were not a problem ever. And this game is awesome.
ah see I had a passport if I needed an import rather than needing to mod
@@n64glennplant Actually, I bought this game at an import shop, I live in South America, and getting Japanese import games was the easiest thing in specialized gamer shops. I even got the Pokémon Silver japanese and played and finished it before the American game hit the shelves. The only thing was, as I said, the plastic piece that kept you from playing PAL or J-NTSC games, and had to be removed by disarming the N64. I had to melt with a lighter the other end of a roller ball pen, and then touch the screw of the N64 until it cooled down and acquired the shape of the screw, since the N64 didn't use a philips or any other recognizable form. It was actually easy if you knew what you were doing.
This basically goes through the whole series, crazy. Also, is this the only footage we ever get of Shinji fighting Unit 02 in Central Dogma????
Guy's it's Shinji from Evangelion he got in my N64, funniest shit I've ever seen. Bad joke aside this actually looks pretty cool.
I bought this the day it came out and still own and play it to this day. Prob one of the best anime to game adaptions ever
Just a shame so few people are aware of it isn’t it 👍
@@n64glennplant yeah it sure is, I'd kill for an updated Eva game as long as they don't use the redo storylines and just stick to the original
It’s nice to see your face for once man, you seem like a friendly cool dude :)
Also, I don’t think this game is my slice of pie, but it definetly looks amazing!
Haha well I do livestream quite often so you can always catch me on camera then 👍😬
1:21 Oh my God what is the Eva doing on that hologram card?
Could you tell me what comes with the game (as in complete) and how many cards does it come with please?
Thanks
Taka Michinoku’s theme😍!
That song in the beginning that was a entrance theme for a tag team in WWF/WWE
yup its takas theme :)
***** INDEED!!!!!
This looks like a interesting game. I would love to see a modern Neon Genesis Evangelion game on modern gaming consoles and pc. A fighting game would be cool or side scroller even JRPG. Cool video. ^_^
Thanks, hope you check it out and maybe enjoy it
@@n64glennplant Thank you. ^_^
Love the Taka theme. INDEED.
Depression, now in 64 bits!
...I know this isn't related to the n64 but I now wanna play some robot alchemic drive
Whoa, I've been watching your review playlist for the past week or two and besides your wrestling videos I've never seen your face, I had a completely different face in mind this whole time
+Gage Schleser ha you know I also do live streams too?
Great video. Just adds on to the reason why many people say that this is one of the best import n64 games. Presentation is absolutely amazing. Liked & Subscribed
Seeing that you are a wrestling fan I hope you one day review IMO the best wrestling game ever made Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 of course on the N64
I agree, the FMVs were super impressive for a Cartridge based format (before Resident Evil 2 port of course) and there seems to be a whole alota voice samples for a N64 title well especially since the Japanese are very good at craming stuff in, leaving some space for extra things lol.
If only there was some sort of English patch, then I'd be having fun with this game.
Kaientai theme very awesome very awesome
Taka 4 life yo! 😂
Yeah it was pretty unique for it's time, I think it would've sold many N64 consoles during that time as well making up for the fans of the Anime that would highly be interested into buying the game and could've gave the Playstation some sorta competition at the time.
The Japanese eye is a great series. Japan exclusives are always intriguing cuz some of them are completely different from other games released in western countries
Heavy Rain is a lot of fun. Its like a point and click adventure without clicking. However it has really not a lot in common with this. xD
0:00 Nostalgia… 😀
Each and every time
11:18 Shinji's Eva sounds so freakin creepy.
Man I want this game so bad, the PS2 smash bros clone was a bit shite.
Great series, The End of Evangelion is what I like to call the Requiem for a Dream of anime, it terms of its surreal nature and memorability. Have you seen Space Runaway Ideon? That show was the basis for Evangelion, and share many similarities.
no i haven't seen that so now i will have to check it out :D
This game really does look fantastic, it's a wonder I haven't come across it yet. You can be sure that I'll be looking for it now.
Wow mate, That was a fantastic review!
The game looks beautiful... I'll definitely have to pick this up when I get the chance.
this must be the first n64 game i emulate...just because the anime was in full rage for that time...
retrovideogamejunkie i can see why you'd have wanted to play it!
It won't do it justice. Half of the effects and screen overlays don't work properly and it can some times self lock itself with to many of those on screen. This is one you are better off modding you N64 to play. (btw modding it is really really easy.)
Never knew this existed. And it looks downright awesome. Wow.
Very cool Glenn
Thank you 👍
@@n64glennplant been watching all of your vids recently and they are fantastic
I can't believe how great it looks. I love the anime and this games seems to do it justice
+Manic KM I think so too
N64 Glenn Plant I wished I played some of these Japanese exclusives back then. Had a modded Saturn but didn't think to do it for the 64
really hope i could get a copy of this game boxed, its realy intresting and i love games like hinokamj chronicles so this is perfect
I've heard one time Bandai was or planned to release this to the USA but gotten cancelled for a reason not sure why it did.
The gameplay looks slow and clunky yet I'm still interested in it being dubbed in English
I'd love to CIB this one, but I'm still hurting fro Sin and Punishment. At least I know what the box should include. I saw that wacky Shogi 64 on your shelf. For the next video plug in the modem and have a go ;). A great review as always GP and I hope the new pc name of this series keeps the spanners at bay.
Yo N64 Glenn Plant, Love your Japanese Eye series so far. I was curious about this game and you gave the best review on youtube. No joke, it made me want to play the game. Since it is Japanese, I decided to emulate it, but I am having trouble with taking down the AT Fields. I can start to open the field on the second mission and am mashing the A and Down C buttons. I keep getting kicked out though just like at 4:47 of the video. Any suggestions?
It was awesome but short... I liked the song Air on a G String in the BGM
I had no trouble playing "once" I understood the mechanics, after a lot of attempts!
I wish we got the ps2 game here in the West.
there is an english patched version of these games for pc that was just put out not that long ago on kat
Looks great, and I didn't even know this game existed! :D
Could you review Taz Express for the N64 since it only came out in Europe and apparently North American PAL adapters don't work on that game?
It's sucks that there was no American release for this. NGE is one of my top five favorite anime of all time. Can't wait for the dub of 3.33 to finally release stateside.....
.. WE'RE STILL WAITING!!!!
+pffffft Should be out by Feb 2016..... Should... but I still have my doubts.
Great review, sir!
***** thank you so much
I think this game looks pretty cool. I'll have to check both the anime and the game out.
You should review Super Robot Spirits. You dont need to really know Japanese, and it's an AMAZING fighter, not even just for the N64, but just in general.
Does anyone know of a translation script into English for this one? so i can read it through the cut scenes?
there aren't any patch translations although there are some guides online with the full story included
this review pushed me to buy this game this year:P
+fazares hope you enjoy it!
i just bought it...i will receive it at the end of april...probably:P
So i guess hard mode is the more suggested answer to unlock everything in one sitting i assume lol
It looks to good for the N64.
Yeahh man good job you showed it off as I almost bought it a while ago without the box etc as I thought it would just be a bog standard case! Where did you get yours from by the way?
Can you please say how much did you pay for the complete n64 evangelion?
And where did you find it?
Omg this game looks super cool and clean!
They should have made a Legend of Galactic Heroes game for N64
never seen this show but this game looks cool and is very cinematic.
Looked awesome but that aiming part is impossible.
Ive heard of this game, so I really enjoyed the review, and the anime is one of my favorite, however if one wanted to buy a copy what's a good site.
eBay, Amazon
Thanks.
You should check out evarena for UT 2004
So need to buy this game, love the box art
There isn't a English sub patch is there?
Sadly not that I know of but there are some English guides online for free
We need another game
Sorry of this sounds stupid, can I play this on my American n64?
I enjoy grapes you can with a passport adapter
Where can I get one and how much?
+i enjoy grapes eBay, but your better off just buying a n64 screw driver and simply modding your system it's so easy even I did it !
how do you mod the n64 to do that
search for it on youtube. its super simple and involves opening up your console with a special screwdriver and cutting little plastic tabs within the cartrage slot
10:43 wtf happened to eva 01 and 02?
aatkins2002 Thanks
Maybe but i wasc thinking more of the PS3 & Xbox 360 version of the game.
Oh really? Awesome! Does it require to beat it on normal or hard to unlock the rest?
Why was this game not released in the us?
There’s never an official answer but I would be 99.9% sure it’s because the fame wouldn’t have sold enough to make it worth a publishers while
I've tried this games like more than ten years ago, the game looks good but the gameplay is reaaaally bad.
How I can play this game on PAL system?
Get a passport device 👍
You'd HAVE to talk for hours to deal with NGE's full plot... great anime but if you ever want to go into detail when describing the plot you need an OHP ad plety of acetates...
yeah its such a complicated and deep storyline its near impossible to even remotely brush on in such a short amount of time :)
True true, I mean I loved it but it really is a killer to explain to someone when you're trying to get them to have a go watching it XD either way, loved the vid man.
I once was talking with a friend about the show and he asked "what exactly is NERV after" ...I don't even think it's possible to explain than in under a dozen hours. Personally, I always found the show to be a little crowded, like it could've worked better if the angels story and the growing up story would have made better unrelated shows, but Eva would not be as important as it is had it been that way, necessary evil I guess.
Look at this game and tell me that money going toward next gens wouldn't be better if we would be still in the Nintendo 64 game development. The substance in games is more valuable than being jerked around with more crap to buy. A mastery of a developers kit or any tech isn't likely when developers and gamers are expendable. Makes me sad. Most of what gamers have always bought was marketing jive jibber jabber.
