TRIP REPORT | The Biggest Storms I've Ever Seen | THAI AIRWAYS Boeing 777 | Bangkok to Manila

- Thai Airways Trip Report flying from Bangkok to Manila in one of the Thai Boeing 777-300ER on a very stormy afternoon in Southeastern Asia.
A very comfortable flight from Bangkok to Manila, in the Philippines, onboard the Thai Airways Boeing 777. The flight was fully booked, but as the flight was operated on a plane that usually makes 10h+ flights, the journey was pretty comfortable. Together with the amazing Thai onboard service, the flight was fantastic.
After an interesting planespotting session at Bangkok airport, we boarded the Boeing 777 that would take us to Manila. We pushed back and departed on time. During taxi, we could see that the typical summer storms were already approaching Bangkok. Just after departure, we started dodging them until our arrival in Manila.
We took off towards the south and quickly made a 90° left turn to start our route to the Philippines. We flew in parallel course to the shore of the Gulf of Thailand until we entered Vietnam [and here we have a new country that I had never seen before :)]. During all our time over Vietnam we were surrounded by storm clouds, they were everywhere. In fact, this flight took place during the hurricane season (typhoons is how they are called in this part of the world, but are exactly the same).
We left Vietnam to the south of Da Nang and started to fly over the South China Sea, in almost direct course to Manila. After surrounding several storm cells, we finally got to the Philippines. More storms were waiting for us there. In fact, we had to hold for 20 minutes before we could make the approach and land.
About the onboard service, well... this flight was just another brick in my love for the Asian airlines. Thai Airways' onboard service was fantastic for this 3-hour flight. Maybe it's just because I'm used to the ridiculously bad service of the European airlines... but all the Asiatic ones always impress me.
For this 3-hour flight, the economy class passengers were offered a full meal service (same as offered in long-haul flights) with 2 options to choose from for the warm meal: chicken or fish. Included were as well all types of drinks. A salad, bread with butter, and a chocolate cake completed the menu. I chose the chicken curry option and I must say it was delicious. Thanks to Thai (and in general to the majority of Asian airlines) for keeping this amazing service level while the Global trend is to cut it completely.

Great video of what looked to be a great flight! It's pretty cool how you got to sit next to (and hear) the engine, it's great how Thai serves meals even on short flights, and additonally, something you didn't mention, they're one of the few airlines that still has a 3-3-3 configuration (instead of 3-4-3) in Economy on their 777's.
Regarding the huge storms, that's probably one of my favorite things about flying in the tropics and subtropics. They're really impressive!

Thought this was a smooth Thai flight considering the giant storm clouds you pointed out to us. Catering looked delicious & I like how the cabin crew was very professional looking in their uniforms. Does anyone else feel excited joining Lucas on his weekly trips ? I do. ❤😊
Yeah, it was a very nice flight! I enjoyed it a lot recording it, both the service and the views outside were very nice.
It's sad that both in Europe and the US the airlines have decided to follow the path of no-onboard-service in economy class, even on a 5h intra-US/ intra-EU flight. Then you see these flights in Asia...

Sin duda, están uno o dos pasos por delante... Una pena que en Europa se haya decidido ir por la vía de la completa austeridad... las aerolínas ganando millones y millones y el servicio a bordo absolutamente pésimo.

El tema es que para volar con STARLUX primero tengo que llegar hasta un aeropuerto en el que vuelen y eso me queda bastante lejos. Ahora en verano evito volar mucho porque los precios son carísimos. Hacia Septiembre retomo la grabación. Por ahora edito lo que acabo de grabar justo antes de la temporada alta de verano :)

That kinda storm is normal when its in season at SEA. If it get worse, it can get heavy rain and lead to flash floods for weeks. Anyway, its a pretty smooth flight considering the size of that storm.
You can't get such huge clouds so much to the north. It's physically impossible as the tropopause is much lower that to the north than over the equator.
For sure there are big storms in seattle, but not like the ones over the equator.

They are way better than Philippines Airlines on Manila to Bangkok in general premium Airlines of the region from 🇯🇵🇹🇭🇹🇼🇭🇰🇰🇷🇸🇬🇲🇾 selected 🇨🇳 airlines always beat Philippine Airlines🇵🇭. You can actually see it evidently in this plane TG B777-3D7/ER Due to it having the superior product and all classes having alternating current plugs while a B777-3F6/ER only has the AC plugs in Mabuhay Class but not Fiesta Class. Excellent trip report

Don't expect that trip report, the options that it would happen are very limited.
But something you can expect maybe in the next months is a long-haul on LOT B787... we'll see...

Thai airways now is better than before Covid?
I didn't fly with Thai before the pandemic, so I can't compare... but I can say that I enjoyed a lot in my 2 flights with them recently :)
Everything is improves a lot. They making huge profit this year and Thai Airways already ordering at least 45 units of Boeing 787 up to 80 units for future.

It's highly unprobable that that would happen. For many reasons, but the main one is that I'm not planning to fly with Scoot unless it's the absolutely only option.
