360fly Review

- I’ve been able to spend several weeks with the 360fly video camera. As the company says, it does give you the power to capture content in fully immersive, interactive 360° HD video - kinda of - it’s actually 240 degrees. We’ll credit the marketing department for that little embellishment.
No harm - the entire industry has already hijacked the term “360 video” and allows it to be used in all kinds of situations where the video you are watching is marketed as 360 video but it’s technically not. So no harm really - just be aware when you are seeing products and services pop up in this industry over the next few years - pay attention to the specs so you know what you are actually paying for.
Along with the camera, the manufacturer also supplies you with some software tools to edit, enhance and share your videos across social media. So the question is - is this camera ready for prime time and should you go out and buy one today?
The 360fly video action camera is available today at your local Best Buy for about $400. I’d suggest you run out and get one.

Giovanni, I work for 360fly , and this is a really well thought out and articulated review of the camera and the 360 camera space in general. A lot of people worked really hard and continue to work hard to make 360 video affordable and fun for everyone.
Props on the Topochico!
BEST review on this camera I have seen yet! Many thanks! This gizmo is on my gotta-buy list! Perfect for national park motorcycle touring.
I am part of the social media and promotions team for 360fly and we are working on a site with the trade show discount. The site should be up and running before we set up at the Indy Boat Show on 2/23. That site will be www.buya360fly.com. Contact me w any issues!
I just bought one but the quality doesn't look HD. It is a very low-quality image, any way to improve this? what im doing wrong?
Would there be another video in the future that shows longer video clips and less man unless there is more playing of those guitars on the wall?
Hi! Thanks for the review! I have one problem or maybe is a question.
For example i record a video of 2 minutes. The video is saved in the
camera. How can i see it with my VR glasses?
The tranfer of the video to the cellphone takes too long? Or maybe i´m doing something wrong? What procedure do you make to see the videos on you phone and your computer?
Thanks in advance
Epic intro man!!
Great review!
Thanks for the review. I have a few questions.
1) What is the audio quality like? (especially compared to GoPro which I've always found to be poor)
2) Does it have an Audio In jack for external mic?
3) Can you link me to your test footage including audio?
I'm very tempted to get one but in Australia they are $650 (we get ripped off on everything over here....dont get me started on cars ;) )
Thanks for the review
Thank you so much for the great review, my dad is getting me one for my birthday, I should have it by next week. I can't wait to use it, I'm excited that it is compatible with go pro accessories, I have one myself. I also will subscribe to your wonder channel as well, thanks again
Really, copying the gopro mount is a proprietary mount. the 1/4 20 threaded mount (now available on the 360fly 4K camera) is THE open standard and works on all NORMAL tripods.
I don't see the HD. Picture is very poor. Any way to enhance this?
I'm a vlogger and this intrigues me. I'm wondering if I could use it for my weekly updates. The thing that stops me is that I often use the strict framing of my Vixia to cut out messy parts of the house or certain people [husband] that don't want to be on camera. :) I have wanted to get a GoPro for a little while so I'll have to think about this one. Thanks for the review!
+Jendi P. I'm a motovlogger and a couple of the biggest problems I've come into with this camera are: 1. The software only lets you upload videos 2min in length. 2. Trying to incorporate the footage into another program (I use Vegas) to combine with footage from say your normal vlogging cam loses you the 360 view capabilities (I'm no editing guru so someone else may have already figured out how to do that one).
Hello! The Quality of my Fly360 HD doesn't look like your video... Do you know the reason?
Thank you.
I like your PRS
how is the battery on it?
74 bridge?
Sick PRS!
it actually records 360° on the horizontal axis and 190° on the vertical axis, so I dunno where this guy is pulling his 240° guesstimate from.
No matter where I go to watch raw video footage from this camera, it seems like the quality is terrible. I don't know if it's due to the user compressing the video file and not knowing it, if it's due to CZcams compression, or if it's just the quality of the camera. Can someone please share the best Fly 360 HD video footage that they've found helpful?
The best videos are on the 360fly app. You will find a lot more videos that I had not seen when searching online. Hope that helps. Just my experience so far ;)
I've been using the 360 Fly since 9/15. The camera is as easy to use as it gets. I've been using it on my race car. The GoPro cases were always getting torn up with rocks sand etc, the lens on this cam is still perfect. The director app is pretty cool, I'm still learning some tricks with it. I've also used the director app and i movie together on the same video. love this camera because I catch all the action!
@jarrat, do you have any videos up ? im interested in getting one for my single seater, is it limited to 2min ?
+Mark Horan I'm working on a time lapse video now. The videos can be however long you want them to be, the camera splits them into 10 minute segments for its purposes - it moves right into the next 10 minute block with absolutely no issue. You could record a lot of 360 video before the internal drive fills up. I've been keeping mine short on purpose. What I love about 360 is the fact I never miss any action. With GoPro it was almost always pointed in the wrong direction. Awesome things were going on all around me - they were just camera shy. Not anymore!!
+Jarret Voorhies - JSV Motorsports cool, will it work with youtube 360 ? when you upload a video id love to see it :)
It will work on CZcams! Some of the videos I post are fixed others are completely interactive. Should have a new up on Sunday.
cool looking forward to it :)
Can you take single shot photos or is it only for video
Bob Thenob you can take screenshots with fly360 app from video.Good ones too.
I just made a video unboxing mine! Can't wait to use it more :)
Have you shared this anywhere? Can you post it on Twitter and tag @360fly? I'd love to see it.
It's on my YT channel :)
need a golf club.
Has anyone tried editing the footage in applications like After Effects or Premier?
I have, you have to use the 360fly Director desktop application to convert the footage to equirectangular video first, then import that footage into Premiere or AE. Then go ahead and do your edits and cuts and render it out.
Then you'll need the use a tool called "Spatial Media Metadata Injector" which is as easy as launching, opening your edited video, and clicking the "Inject Metadata" button. It'll create a new file that has the appropriate metadata for CZcams to recognize it as 360 footage.
After uploading it could take several minutes to over an hour (depending on how large/long the video is) for it to correctly display in 360.
If you plan on adding text or doing any compositing you'll need a plugin like SkyBox Studio for After Effects, which is a bit pricey.
Does it float?
ThunderSyncGames no
He is reading from the CARD.
Anyway to join different clips together? I have one with a ton of video but to make a little movie out of those for me has been frustrating. Haven't figured out a way to take segments from all to make just one. Any help would be appreciated.
+eye4thesky If you are using the 360fly - I'd suggest their desktop director app.
I have the fly and the desktop app just cant figure that part out. Thanks for the response. I'll dig deeper and see what I mightve missed.
+eye4thesky I just started playing with mine and the most frustrating part I've found is that the app and the desktop director do not do the same things. What you end up having to do is merge the files in the desktop director then upload the merged file to your phone to edit it in the app. But if you're looking to do this and share it you may not want to waste your time cuz you can only share videos up to 2min in length. It funny that the software limits the camera's functionality more so that the camera itself.
+eye4thesky I've not got a 360fly yet but I have done some experiementing with 360 Video editing. What I did was take a 360 panoramic image (but footage would be the same) into my normal video edit suit (in my case, Adobe Premier CC). I then cut my edit and export the final cut in 4K for CZcams. I then use a Metadata injector to prepare the file for upload to youtube. So long as you have a video editing package that can work with 4K, you should be fine.
OK...Geekbeat, im hoping you can help me. Their desktop director doesnt do anything and is actually more limited than the phone app..why? I get there is some coding that needs to be done before it goes to youtube but why make a phone with limited handling capability the main platform for uploading and editing? 5 minute video and my phone starts to turn to lava. There were claims that Adobe Premiere can edit the clips since the phone app can only cut 2 minutes of video to process......................................2mins!!!!!!!!!!! thats not even upload worthy! then the audio is mandated music from the app? how many videos made until youre sick of the same old track...anyways back to Adobe....which cant seem to handle the mp4 format... any advice there? thanks Geekbeat! and as always good video. The camera is good but id rather pay another 100 and have all the features i need...editing software capabilities, a way to hardwire the power, a lockable mount(not a twist), a way to protect the investment if claiming to be an action cam...
I didn't hear any criticism before I fall asleep.
Basically this is a camera for those photographers who cannot frame action footage while they shoot. They do it while editing.... that's lame.
I got it on amazon for $84
😱 I got it for like two hundred
Huh?
We purchased the 360Fly 4K Action Camera for $349 in November last year and the quality is and always has been substandard. It really is a piece of junk. We have contacted 360 Fly on a number of occasions and have had no response - their customer service does not exist.
The camera itself is inferior to any GoPro on the market - the 4K quality is terrible, the colours are neither sharp nor vivid, resolution is poor, there is just no clarity. The hardware feels good quality as it is so heavy, but we know better.
Not sure if we bought a dud as we haven’t had the opportunity to get it fixed as have not replied to our emails.
Avoid 360Fly at all costs.
I thought so too, until I checked what resolution I was converting the footage to in the director ( I convert so I can edit in Adobe PP). Originally I was converting to the 720 equivalent(I have the HD version) and it looked a blurry mess. Just recently I realized my mistake and converted it to the 1080 and everything looks great! Yes you will have to do a little color correction to bring out the colors but remember this is a 360 camera. The 4k and HD apply to the entire image not the small piece of the footage you are viewing. If you want your view to be 4k you'll have to throw the money away at one of the expensive camera rigs for GoPro, Sony, etc.
360fly blows
Wouldn't recommend. Lots of issues with product and after sales service.
According to 360fly it's not waterproof and it doesn't have night vision. So to me it's pointless to buy one at that price.
and NOT 3D! Whatever happened to HTC's 3D 360 entry?
An easy Google search and you can find many pages on 360 fly's very own website that state it is waterproof. It is also HD. Where do you get your info from?
