- This is the data collection for the experiment to determine an unknown capacitance. A capacitor discharges through a resistor (known resistance) and the potential difference across the capacitor is measured along with time. Two methods can be used to determine C:
① Taking logs and using gradient from lnV v. t graph.
② Using time constant which is found by analysing V v. t graph.
Both methods are explained in video 2: • Capacitor Discharge th...
There is a worksheet to go with this experiment so you can try the analysis yourself: www.tes.com/teaching-resource...
There is a spreadsheet available to help analysis of the data from this experiment:

Relevant concepts: capacitance, potential difference, natural logs, digital multimeter, resistance, and time constant.
Experiments with capacitors, like this one, are mandatory practicals for many physics specifications. So this is good practice for OCR physics A, AQA A-Level physics, Edexcel A-Level physics, CPAC, PAG, practical endorsement.
Very useful, thanks
I've been wondering how charging up a capacitor is faster than discharging it
It isnt always it depends on circuit resistance. If you charge with no resistance it’ll charge quickly. If you charge through a resistor it’ll take longer. Same for discharge.
Is there a link for the second video? Thank you by the way great experiment!
Hi. I haven't yet uploaded the second video. I'm working on it. I hope to have it edited and published this week. I'm sorry it's delayed.
@@PhysicsHQ Okay thank you so much! :)
Hi. Did you see video 2? I uploaded it a while back but forgot to update you.
is there a breadboard equivalent to that switch you've used there?
Not familiar with breadboard components. I would be surprised if there isn’t a two way switch like I used.
Will it work on PF capacitors
should do
Love from 🇶🇦 ❤️
Thanks. All the best over in Qatar!
