    I use a Sigma Art 24-35mm F2 full frame lens with my Canon R5 in this crop mode but with a viltrox ef to rf speed booster (eliminating most of the crop) and a ninja V+ recorder. This essentially gives unlimited recording at a slightly tighter focal range but with 5k24p,30p, or even 60p in ProRes Raw at an aperture of F1.4 thanks to that speed booster. Absolutely love the results.

  • @itwasme2435

    Just for information, cropping sensor is the same result than using crop sensor.
    So in fact on R familly if u crop, this lens is equivalent to 30-60mm F2.8.

      Not really? Technically, it is as bright and has the same shallow depth of field as a full frame F/1.8. However, the smaller sensor size means that you have more noticeable noise and you're more zoomed in. That means that to have the same noise levels, you need to lower the ISO, making the image darker. Similarly, to get the same framing, you have to move further away from the subject and the further you are from the subject, the deeper the depth of field seems. However, the first point can be ignored because 4k video is such a small portion of the camera's sensor size and the second point, while you shouldn't ignore it, is actually negligible in the grand scheme of things. Comparing the price of this lens to Canon's other options like the 24-70 f/2.8, it is actually a really cheap and reliable option. However, if you spent ~$3,500 on the R5 and don't have enough for the 24-70, perhaps you should have purchased a less expensive camera a nicer lens.

  • @OldGirlPhotography
    @OldGirlPhotography Před 3 lety +7

    There is a view that you also have to multiply the aperture by the crop factor when using such a lens on a full-frame body. Some tests with this mix have shown that the bokeh or background blur more closely resembles the multiplied aperture instead of the native aperture. So the "fast" argument for using this lens might not be completely valid if background blur is important.

    • @michaelkress84
      @michaelkress84 Před 2 lety +3

      It's true. The aperature must also be multiplied. That's why the lens is the same size as a 24-70 f/2.8. It is in practice a 30-60 f/2.8 because of the crop factor. That said, it is a great lens!

    Almost one should buy this lens specifically for a FF camera. Like the author corrected in a comment and failed to mention in the vid, this is just a 27-53mm f2.8 when using crop mode.
    If you can use full width video without any obvious downsides, a 24-70 2.8 and shooting full width is just way better. Only two possible reasons I can think of are to avoid overheating or sometimes, to unlock higher feame rates in crop mode.
    If you have it already, its an option you can consider sometimes. But its certainly not "ideal" in any way shape or form.
    For APSC though this lens is still king, especially for the price! Works great on my R7, though needs to be said, with a slightly higher vudget, using EF f4L or 2.8L zooms + a speedbooster on it, you can often match or even surpass the overall performance of this lens, even on native APSC.

      The "depth of field" will be less shallow but not because the 1.8 magically turns into 2.8, but because after crop you have to move the camera further away from the object to capture the same object, which makes it look somewhat similar to a smaller aputure,

    Couple of important updates to this video:
    1) I mistakenly assumed f/1.8 on this lens was equal to f/1.8 full frame. In terms of light gathering capabilities, the Sigma performs more like f/2.8 full frame. Still large, but not quite as big as f/1.8 full frame.
    2) A viewer asked about autofocus noise when using an onboard mic. Tested noise with a Deity V-Mic mounted on top of the R5. Compared noise between the Sigma 18-35, the Sigma 24mm EF, and the Canon 24-70mm. All produced the same amount of "clicking" in recorded audio. I did have to crank the gain on the R5 all the way up to really hear it, but when comparing autofocus noise on the 18-35mm to other lenses, my copy of the lens was the same.

So if you have a 20 megapixel R6 then I imagine the photo or video file will be much smaller so I imagine this is going to have a huge impact on the quality of the file given its low weight. Hey Todd, does the R5 allow slomo when working with the 18-35mm? I have an EOS R and with that lens it does not allow me to shoot in slow motion.

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 Před 3 lety

      The maximum Frame Rate for the R is 30fps in 4k. Thats not lens dependant.

    Tue sigma art 40mm is significantly better. Probably the sharpest lens on the market and almost perfect in every aspect except for the weight

    How does it compare to the RF 35mm, want to know if its worth getting the adapter?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  Před 3 lety +1

      First, the RF 35mm has the same aperture and low light performance, but is a prime lens, so you'd have to "zoom with your feet", unlike the Sigma 18-35mm which has variable focal lengths. Second, you can shoot full frame images with the RF 35mm (the Sigma creates 1.6x cropped images equaling 18 megapixels). Third, you can shoot 8K video with the RF 35mm (the Sigma cannot because "Movie Cropping" is enabled). Those are the main differences I can think of.
      As for adapters, I think they're definitely worth it, especially since there are far more EF lenses than RF (right now anyway), and EF lenses are typically cheaper.

    • @Voxmagna
      @Voxmagna Před 3 lety

      @@dominey Thanks, I have both just still have no adapter and Sig is still new in the box as it was sold out everywhere. Dont plan on going in too deep into the EF line as there's only like 2 Zeiss Milvus lenses i want. Saving up towards the RF 70-200 f2.8

    Does this work on the R6? Thanks for the video!

    • @dominey
      @dominey  Před 3 lety

      Technically? Yes. It will mount. However the lower resolution sensor of the R6 will even lower resolution images, and the video quality won't be quite as good because it doesn't oversample 8K when creating 4K.

  • @RichardsLife
    @RichardsLife Před 3 lety

    Will the loud auto focus sound be heard in the video if you are using a rode mic attached to your camera ? And I know it’s manual focus so how would that work if you are doing a vlogging type of video, would you constantly have to adjust to focus ?

    Hi, can I ask how this would work on the EOS R? The 4K is already heavily cropped on that. How would that work with this lens?

    • @dominey
      @dominey  Před 2 lety +1

      Don't have an EOS R to test this with, unfortunately. Assuming the R recognizes the lens as being a crop sensor lens, it sounds like Movie Cropping may be enabled automatically. www.manualslib.com/manual/1499201/Canon-Eos-R.html?page=219

    • @ericlippe
      @ericlippe Před rokem

      I have an R- the crop is already 1.73x, meaning that it is more than cropped enough for the 18-35mm. It is a wonderful lens for that camera. Just make sure that you have an EF-RF adapter.

    How would this lens work on a m 50 with a speed booster?

    • @Tvennet
      @Tvennet Před 3 lety +1

      It’s not ment to be used with the speedbooster because it’s an APSC lens, so if you put it on the speedbooster, you’ll get huge vignette till 24mm.

      I don’t think so. I mention this in the video, but this creates cropped, lower resolution photos on the R5. Works well for video tho.

    • @ericlippe
      @ericlippe Před rokem

      an m50 already has a 1.6x crop, so you can't stack a speedbooster on top of that.

  • @shinzychan5117

  • @EverythingCameFromNothing

    It should be noted that an f1.8 crop is roughly equivalent to a f2.8 full frame when it comes to depth of field/Bokeh, but otherwise a great video 😃

    • @lvrvisuals7800
      @lvrvisuals7800 Před 2 lety

      No. The incoming light does equal around F2.8 but the bokeh and DOF does not change. Only exposure wise it changes.

    • @berkertaskiran
      @berkertaskiran Před 2 lety +2

      @@lvrvisuals7800 You're wrong. Sensor size only affects depth of field, not how much light is gathered. So this lens is in terms of how much light it gathers is 1.8 used in all cameras, but the equivalent depth of field changes depending on what you use it on.
