- Wringing out some more fun with this handy little .308 / 7.62X51. This thing is easy to shoot and it hits hard.

Yep, I probably do lots of things I'm not supposed to do, or that others don't do; it's made life pretty interesting, though. :-) My best friend and college roommate, Bob Frost, wrote a poem about that. Don't know if he ever got it published, but I remember him stealing my beer and struggling with some lines about "two roads diverging in the wood," or something like that.
Your college roommate Bob Frost, the one born in 1874? I think you're spinning a tall tale, Mr 45. Oh well, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
I have a Ruger Gunsite Scout special edition in 6.5 Creedmore. It's a fun gun to shoot.
I’ve had mine for nearly 6 years. One of my favorite guns. It’s just so beautiful.
I bought the ruger gunsite rifle last month. Have a scout scope on it. And it was right on at 50 yds right out of the box. At 100 yds it was about 3/4 - 1 inch low. This rifle is really accurate.
Hickok, thanks for everything you do. You've made several of my purchases easier, and I appreciate you taking the time to spread your knowledge with the younger generations. Thanks to your video, I recently ordered the new Ruger Gunsite with an 18" barrel. Thanks again.
Coming from California, I live vicariously through your videos. Thank you Hickok for your videos throughout the years. I love the pure happiness you convey immediately after hearing a 'KLING' right after hitting a steel target. Cheers!
Two years late with this but, this gun is CA legal tho?
Gregory Steffensen, This gun is legal in CA. I bought one 2 years ago, and thus far there’s been no gun legislation affecting bolt actions...but with the incrementalist gun bans, that will be coming as Leftists continue their march to eliminating your freedoms, and as good people continue to do very little about it.
thanks for the reviews hickok. My father just recently passed and was a huge Ruger fan. He had 4 assorted Ruger. 357s and a .454 Casull. but no Ruger rifles... i ended up pickin this guy up as a little memorial and love it. thanks again for helping me find something to remember my father.
I've heard these tend to shoot around 1 moa or less at 100 yards- nice!
You don't understand how much I love watching your videos. As a gun nut, I wait patiently for every video you put up. You make my day each time you put a new video. I'm sure there's others like me that wake up in the morning to check your channel for new videos. I even eat my dinner in front of my computer to watch your videos. Keep doing what you're doing!!
I luv that rifle, u have the best firearm vids period u old school in ur approach, discuss history, and u explain everything with humour too, thank u very much I spend lot watching ur amazing vids and learning a lot thank u.
u r still one of the best shots i have ever seen Hickok, keep up the good work
I've seen a million of your videos, but out of all those guns you've shown this one sticks out to me. Such a beautiful handy rifle!
This one and the suppressed Rossi lever-action SBR
Get one you won’t be sorry.
@onebigkahuna69, I've observed that it can cause me to mess up on windage just a little bit at time, depending on the range and the sights on the gun. It's the sun on the sights and barrel, I guess. I have not totally figured it out, obviously. :-)
Yes sir Mr Hickock... Life is really good when you have a personal range ;-)
I love how at the start of the video a block is missed and you think "man, he couldn't hit a barn door"...then suddenly, you realise he's over 100 yards away using iron sites on a borrowed rifle....lol We salute you sir!
I like them because they remind me of the sporterized military rifles that I grew up with deer hunting. I'm also a big fan of the mag and the military type sights that I am so comfortable with !...Great Vid !!!
Love the way 308 just puts things down
Picked mine up on friday, I agree with you, life is good, what can i say, I like to shoot.
Thanks for your time
Roger
Love your videos Hickok! Please keep 'em coming.
Thanks for sharing. Ruger makes some very useful tools. Stay sharp and live long.
Every time you show a great gun I feel like I have to go out and buy one!!!
Thanks hickok for this video. First saw it back in 2012 after seeing this rifle in my local gun store. Finally got one in late 2012 and have loved it. I have many other rifles but I consider this one to be just for me. I did have to get the left handed model and I did put a Nikon forward mounted scope. It is a dream to shoot. Will always be in my collection and will never get rid of it. Thanks again for the video. You should do a range 3.
If you don't own this rifle. BUY IT. I really am very happy with mine and I would recommend this to anyone. Recoil is actually pretty tame.
It is FC from Thailand! I always love your videos. I just got a Ruger Scout Rifle couple months ago. Your shooting range is amazing.
"That .308 goes right through the 2 liter" haha, Hickok you're the best. I'm glad you approve of the gun too, cause I just picked one up today:)
That's on my list of things to purchase ASAP! I've had a little bit of trouble finding them but I have my sights on one right now. I can't wait to get it looks like it's pretty accurate with open sights! Great Video!
Polymer mags are absolutely the best magazines money can buy. And most of the time they're the same price (at least they are for my AR). Amazing product!!
I bought one of Ruger GS rifles in Green and Gray stock. I dumped the Bird Cage and replaced it with a Yankee Hill muzzle brake. Mounted a Nikon Monarch 2-8X32 in the standard scope location. Took about 50 rounds of FMJ ammo to break in the barrel where the groups pulled together. Sub-MOA gun with my loads, SMK 150g over Varget max load from the Sierra Load Book. Love this Rifle!
I took back the rifle to the store where I purchased and it was sent back to Ruger and they fix the problem, I took it back to the range and worked properly, I used iron sight and very good accuracy. I thing this rifle is good it is a double purpose rifle, you can use it for hunting and home defense. Regarding "Scout Rifle", in my point of view this rifle do not fill that concept because it is a bolt action rifle and today we have a variety of other better options like semiautomatic rifles that can have rapid fire, more rounds in the magazine and better accuracy. It is a good rifle I am happy to own it and thanks to Hickok45 for his always good and polite reviews on firearms. Happy new year
LtCol Cooper’s written description of the “scout rifle” specified a bolt action. Significantly, he originated and defined the concept. Therefore, your assertion that other designs are scout rifles simply is erroneous. Of course, this does not suggest that other designs - such as ARs - aren’t perfectly good alternatives.,
Thanks Hickok have been waiting to see this chapter 2 for awhile
Man I love that Gunsite Scout. I hope the gun show next month has one, it'll be coming home with me.
Great video as always, thanks for what you do giving us the material.
Gotta love the sound of .308
Polymer mags fit perfectly, no play whatsoever, they also come with a little dust cover if your storing or packing in the elements.
Next video with that rifle should be "Epic long range woods walk". Great video as always.
I just got one...yes!
Awesome video, wish it was a bit longer! I can't wait to see Hickok45 try out the new Ruger American Rifle. That thing looks sweet for the price!
That's a fine little rifle. Thanks for the video.
Life is good! and the more you say it, the better it becomes. Good shooting Hickock.
The Ruger Gunsite scout rifle is a sweet gun for sure.
Beautiful sound.
@WatchPolitician Those are Howard Leight ear plugs. I bought a set and they rock, small compact and easy to put on, no standing around holding in those stand alone plugs. That band puts nice even pressure and ensure good seating in the ear.
Nice rifle, I love mine, bought it yesterday :D I was considering an AR, but, I just loved the look of it in your other video, and loved the way it felt when I checked it out in person.
I really enjoy your videos, and I'm so getting me one of these rifles now!
Just bought mine ruger gsr 2 months ago. It's a great rifle and very fu. To shoot. Already put about 100 rounds through it.
Getting this rifle in a couple of weeks. Can't wait!
i have one in left handed and a stainless barrel. love it.
Yup, Hickok! Can't beat a MauseRuger for a bolt action rifle. Can't justify this Scout for now, but, see it in my future.
Thats actually very outstanding for an old man with iron sights standing very good indeed
Wisconsin? Awesome! Me too!
oh man that's the most awesome sounding rifle so far!
Great Video, i have the Scout rifle in the Australian version, (slightly longer stainless Barrel) and have always had a scope on it, this video has prompted me to put the ghost ring back on, get to the range and practice!
Awesome demonstration
After firing a few mags through one of these, I can say it will be one of my first rifles :D. I like light weight high caliber rifles!
Aussie50 Look at the Model 11 scout from Savage. 18" barrel accustock and accutrigger.
BlueonGoldZ Decent compensator or suppressor would help with recoil.
BlueonGoldZ Yeah it is an older concept and I have no idea why its so popular. I'd rather take any model Mosin-Nagant and just put a scout scope on it, in such a fashion where it won't get rid of anything original. The only thing good out of the scout concept is light weight rifle with a powerful cartridge. But I hate the idea of long eye relief scopes.
Ratkill9000 I agree and you read my mind though since I'm a Brit, I would like to buy an old Enfield (in good condition, obviously) and use that instead. It would be interesting to get someone who can do the mad minute with an Enfield and have them try it on the Ruger Scout. I've tried the bolt on the Scout and it is so difficult to use.
I love mine I have the xs scout rail with a red dot, 5 round accurate mag, OD green cloth m1 carbine sling
Sounds like John's having a good time on the four wheeler!
I have one with the leupold scout scope and love it.....smoked multiple muley's with it.
As a patrol rifle instructor for my department you are correct about the sunlight. The sun will cast a shadow on the front sight post. If the sun does in fact set to your west, which I'm sure it does, and the places the sun to your right the post will be wider to the left. I really like this rifle and have been thinking about one for myself.
Fired my Scout for the first time today. No optics yet (I don't shoot like hickok45) but was hitting 3 inch groups at 150ds with the iron sights. Nice rifle!
Part 3 please. It's been long enough c'mon.
I had .308 for years traded it and have regretted it. Going to get another one, lol. Yes another video! Version 3!
Just bought one of these sweet rifles with a Leupold scope. Only it has a solid wood stock. Can't wait to shoot it!
Hickok is right on about the sun setting thing. I will not shoot in my backyard in the evening when the sun is low and shining on the side of my face. I miss way more targets. It throws you off for some reason. Of coarse on a cloudy day does not matter. I think Hickok could hit his targets in a blinding snowstorm, in the dead of night. He is amazing !!!!
Hickock , your the best !
bolt actions are awsome. good gun to get skills up
@BonesTheCat, You are right about that! It's been a surprise, even from the beginning when people seemed to like those first few pocket-camera-on-a-tripod Glock videos more than I thought made any sense. :-)
Hey mate, I know it's an old vid, but is yours the 16 or 18in barrel cheers
@@mattyvb1 it’s the 18 inch mate .
@@user-gd7fx4jf5c yeah true shit,. I've just ordered the 16.5. I assumed it was 16.5 cause it's blued. We only have two listings in Oz 18inch in ss and 16.5 in blued. I wanted 18inch but I don't like the SS.
Like the Ruger Scout more than the Savage Scout. And way more than fhe Mossberg Scout. Accuracy & quality wise.
Yes, using the include Ruger mounts for starters.
yes why love you hickok i havent found a bolt action rifle that like yet
I love my Ruger GSR in .308. A couple things to add is that noted gun editor/writer and t.v. host Ed Head from Gunsite was instrumental in working with Ruger in the designing of this rifle. Also, I believe the magazines are Accuracy International mags, so thankfully Ruger is now making their own polymer versions. I love your reviews and hope that You-Tube and Google quit messing with your videos. Keep up the great work!
This second video of yours on the Scout makes me feel much more confident about it. I'm getting the hots for this baby now. My last .308 was an Ishapore/Enfield. Got about 500 rounds left from it which need a good new tube to send 'em out there, and I think maybe I've found it. But I haven't seen any of these for under around $800.
That rifle looks delightful to shoot, nice, handy, and short. With the Mosin anything within range of the 7.62x54R round can also be simultaneously dispatched by fixing the bayonet.
Great little rifle! I really want them to come out with a hybrid of the foreign version and have it in stainless!
Yes Mr. Hickok45, you love guns, all guns. Any size, shape, color or caliber you love them all. May I wish you one of each to enjoy and with plenty of ammo to boot !
enjoy my cyber freind
yes, it comes with ruger scope rings, you will have to remove the rear sight as it mounts where the rear ring mounts.
Damn Hickok you're really making me want to spend money I probably shouldn't be. I can get one of these for 900 bucks, it's such a pretty looking rifle and very unique and practical to boot. Really cool rifle and great vid as always.
Same here in Wisconsin.
nice never seen this kind of bolt action rifle before. I like it
Hell of a rifleman. Nice shooting
I like your reviews on fire arms all are very useful and very pragmatic I enjoy it and that ones on glock are really very nice. I just want to add about this rifle may be I had bad luck when I purchased mine recently but all the good things of the rifle were opaqued by a couple of problems that I found. The main problem was that some times the rifle fail to eject the cartridge, the other issue it was with the 10 round steel magazine that comes with the rifle it barely hold 9 rounds, and another thing I would like the butt stock of the rifle a little bit large. May be I will consider take back the rifle to the store or contact Ruger to fix the problem
No matter what you say about your misses, you are still a great shot to me. That's what I like about your videos, they are real. This is an excellent bolt action weapon. I live it when we shoot a gun, and then we have to have it. I just wish I could shoot any rifle half that good. Have a good day...
"Now watch me miss him". BOOM. Perfect shot.
Lol, the sun sets in the west everywhere! Unless the earth starts spinning in the opposite direction.
Great vid... As always.
Yes yes yes on the new mags.
I bought a few myself.
Much better than the original metal boxes
Got one of these in .308 for Christmas this year.
I really like this rifle and have been looking for one. It looks so kool. Reminds Me of the Enfield No.5 Jungle Carbine. Which is another favorite.
This. My exact thought the first time I saw it. Kind of pricy though at $899
thanks
Greetings from Central europe
I love the videos from you i spent my sunday siting relaxing and watching HICKOK45 videos
Excelent
Blaming misses on the sun. Haha. Best hickok45 excuse yet! Awesome rifle.
Hickok you are awesome!
Hits like a hammer!
That is a sweet rifle. Hard to beat .308.
Nothing beats the sound of a bolt being worked back and forth...
Love that rifle...I wish I could get one.
What a pretty rifle.
Nice little rifle. Might just have to add one to my collection.
@beaker126 They are Ruger magazines. I don't know if they outsource production, but they work perfectly in my experience. Also less weight and cost compared to the steel magazine that came with it when I bought the Scout.
Another great vid Hickok love ya work mate, hope you cheer up soon mate i know it's not easy.
Man that thing hits HARD!!! Bolt action .308's are a blast (literally)! Sorry again about Gunner...I miss seeing him in the vids. He seemed to be a good dog.
There are something estetic about a bolt action... just feels better...
Like you get closer to the rifle.
great gun, great video.
thank you
do you find the polymer mags fit better?
Nice vid. I've got one of these and love it.
