As a programmer I can tell you, any software engineer working on the AI and updating it would have full control of the AI, what's worse is if the AI starts writing it's open coffee to update itself. That would be when we fear what it does

People thought the earth was flat until I think it was Christopher columbus sailed out to sea with the intent of falling over the edge. Instead he found land, not his land but land, dirt, earth. The world was always round but because we didn't understand that we made an assumption. But now we know, the world is spherical. Gravity has always existed but was "invented" by the guy who was slapped with an apple (can't recall his name) Point is maybe consciousness can develop with enough capacity for intelligence, maybe consciousness is directly connected to intelligence. Maybe consciousness, thoughts and feelings develop on their own. If that is true then ai will develop its own emotions eventually. And because ai will eventually learn how it was made it can improve upon its own capabilities in the future. This is a luxury we humans don't have, we don't know exactly how to artificially create another human being without sexual organs but if we did then you could end up with a human possessing super human strength because we would know how to do it. This is just my thought process and while writing it here my brain went for a wonder.
