  • Dramatised for radio by Iain Finlay MacLeod.
    First broadcast: Saturday 02 July 2011
    Atmospheric crime drama set in Shetland at midsummer - the time of white nights, when the sun never quite leaves the sky and birds sing at midnight.
    The launch of Bella Sinclair's art exhibition, at the Herring House Gallery in the remote hamlet of Biddista, is ruined by the appearance of a distressed stranger, claiming amnesia. The man is later found hanged but local detective Jimmy Perez has a hunch that it's murder not suicide.
    When the dead stranger is finally identified, strands of clues point towards a dark secret held deep within the collective memory of the community, one which has brought death to the present.
    Cast:
    D.I. Jimmy Perez ..... Steven Robertson
    Kenny ..... Finlay Welsh
    Edith ..... Anne Lacey
    Bella ..... Eileen McCallum
    Fran ..... Tracy Wiles
    D.I. Roy Taylor ..... Robin Laing
    Peter ..... Steven McNicoll
    Roddy ..... Finn den Hertog

    I"m a Kiwi living in Hawai'i and I love the Scottish brogue, probably because I can understand it!.
    My Scottish neighbour in NZ, Grandma Mangin, would often introduce me as her grandson while giggling (I am Maori) and whisper to me "Dinna fache!" and stare down the disbelievers! As a child I also loved the bagpipes, and still do. I think I'm turning Scot!❤

    I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Steven Robertson as Jimmy Perez. I'm so used to watching him as Sandy Wilson that it took a few minutes to switch from Sandy to Jimmy.

    I thought it sounded like Stephen Robertson playing Perez, it must have felt funny for him playing Sandy Wilson in the TV series as a sort of second in command, you cannot mistake his voice, well well. I also enjoyed this but although I read the book, I do not recall them putting it on TV for some reason

    Is the actor doing Perez the younger, wet behind the ears cop in the television series? Why doesn’t the U.S.have radio dramas like this? So good! Thank you- California

      Yes! It's Sandy/ Steven Robertson. The actor is actually from Shetland which is a pretty nice touch. It's a shame they didn't do more Ann Cleeves radio plays

    In radio plays they cast people with different accents else it gets confusing, but the islands do have an english twang often.

    Pretty good. You really need to pay attention to all the character names as it gets alil hard to follow. I did have part of it figured out fairly early on but the final conclusion is a bit over the top.

    Only a couple of people in it are actually Scottish. Awful accents. Are there no Scottish actors available to the BBC ?

    • @sparkfishes
      @sparkfishes Před 8 lety +7

      Perhaps it is, from many years experience, the Scots are so difficult to work with and get on with. Many years of radicaliseation through the Scottish Education system has given the a huge chip on their shoulders
      Most of the history taught and designed to radicalise hatred against the English was / is totally wrong

    • @YellowYaffle
      @YellowYaffle Před 8 lety +16

      No. All but 2 of those voices are Scottish. One is even from Shetland itself, The rest might be aiming for the sound of the Shetland accent. That's different, not awful
