  • How to run Filezilla while the Ubuntu repository version throws the following error: GnuTLS error -50 in gnutls_priority_set_direct: The request is invalid.Error: Failed to initialize TLS.
I thought I'd keep this video short and to the point, to help anyone unsure how to use the tarball download on Filezilla's website to run the program. Although targeted at those with the current GnuTLS error, this is a useful method to know.
The video shows how to run the latest version of Filezilla based on the download available on their website. This method prevents the need for additional repositories, and needs you use the latest version until the main repository is updated to avoid the current GnuTLS error -50 which results in a "Failed to initialize TLS" error.

Well, I just don't know what to say. I've been struggling all day to build FileZilla from source since the version in the Ubuntu repo is broken since I "upgraded" to 18.04 (in my case, not the TLS error--I don't think--but because any attempt to do anything on the remote FTP site caused FZ to crash completely . . . to close and disappear). Having not built from source before on Linux, I learned a lot, but found I still couldn't install the gnutls library that is one (of dozens) of dependencies for FZ. It's 1:00am right now, and I gave up for the night to watch a few machinist's videos on CZcams. On a whim, I entered "gnutls" in CZcams search and your video came up! I had already downloaded the tarball you showed, but I didn't realize it had functioning binaries in it. I just now tried it and it works!!! What's more, it knew enough to find and use my existing profile and sites settings. Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you!

Sorry to hear your pain Todd (I know that feeling well!). I share videos in the hope they get to people like yourself... and hopefully reducing the late night frustrations we all get from time to time 😀.
This sounds like a useful workaround for your issue too, though we'll both want to get back to an installed version soon!
In the meanwhile, thank you for leaving such a nice comment. I'm always motivated by hearing such a positive impact from a video... and all the very best on your Filezilla fix.

Thanks for help for work around. I also might get onto Filezilla and suggest they build a "appimage" version of current stable version for Linux os's and make available for linux users familiar with using Appimage installs

Nice idea. The current delay in the main repository definitely begs a question if alternative options. Glad you found my workaround a good option for now.

Thanks! Can't believe the repository is STILL not updated--Filezilla is unusable at 3.33.0!

Unfortunately it is a security flaw to install the apps this way.

Hi Cesar, thanks for watching. In what way is this a security flaw? The app is not installed, and is run with standard (not root) privileges. I'm not sure I see how this is a security flaw.
