  • A ban on restaurant hidden fees was reversed by Governor Newsom days before it was set to take effect. Instead, restaurants must disclose and explain the surcharge.

It's dishonest to charge ANY surcharges. Customers shouldn't have to pay a separate fee to cover employee costs. And the sad truth is that in most cases, the owners are pocketing ALL those fees.

Exactly right, I just wish more patrons realized that we as servers don’t pocket that “surcharge” money and on top of it we don’t agree with it either 😓

Aww thank you Newsome. Just what struggling Californians needed, to be surprised by higher than expected prices when the final bill comes. Ridiculous. A lot of the time you don't even see a full menu. Example, if you see a sign for a special outside and just want to order that, you then have to scour the whole menu to see what you'll actually pay. Do you keep your menu until the bill comes to make sure they don't tack a fee on and hand you a different menu that actually shows the fee. So dumb!
Also its 2024, a lot of us folk are just checking out pictures of menus/dishes from google and heading in to order that, we're not expecting the price has gone up 40% due to inflation + another 5-15% surcharge + 20-25% tip. Its just turning us off from dining out entirely, I hope this price deception backfires on them.

How about.... Oh idk, don't run a business if you can't run it honestly, and don't eat at a restaurant you can't really afford?? 🤔

What should we pay a surcharge for their employees training or compensation on top of pushing the customers for a minimum of 20% tipping/ it’s outrageous ! Employees already earn the highest minimum wage anyway. Surcharges and tipping - it’s out of hand!

This should expand to becoming a nationwide, federal law asap. 💪

i refuse to pay any restaraunt surcharges - if you want to raise your prices, then print the real price next to each menu item - that seems fair - grocery stores don't hit you with a surcharge...some say it's to help pay for insurance for their employees, but many businesses do that w/o any surcharges - business 101 is learning about fixed & variable expenses & learning how to price your goods/services accordingly so you can make a profit...these places that add a surcharge put those that don't at a significant disadvantage as they can advertise lower prices while in fact charging an overall higher price - we need total TRANSPARENCY!

I hate hidden charges and automatic tips, but the reality seems to be that the Pinheads under the dome in Sacramento just HATE businesses and restaurants in particular, especially fast food.

The restaurants are doing this to themselves though. A lot of establishments are honest and don't have these fees. The government actually made a good law. All Gavin had to do was nothing instead of sign an exemption for restaurants.

Restaurants charging surcharges for servers benifits 😅 paying workers benefits are a part of doing business. If restaurants want customers to pay for workers benefits then don't tip!!
