I make $3 less per hour than a McDonalds employee.

Gavin made an exemption to the new minimum wage laws specifically for businesses that made bread on location before the laws got enacted. He clearly only plans to allow his friend to benefit, while at the same time, block all other businesses from now making bread on location to get the same financial benefit by paying a lower wage.

As a fast food worker, I am now at $20 an hour. But the irony here is that I am making way less now. Why? Because any business that has to pay $20 an hour has slashed employee hours to part time. At $16.50 an hour, I was getting 6 to 8 hour shifts. At $20 an hour, I am only getting 4 hour shifts and somedays, only 3 hours. So I have taken a significant pay cut. And with California auto insurance having just gone up 33%, and rents that just keep going up and up, I don't know how I am going to survive. Thank You Governor Gruesome.

@nolanchen1876: The French Laundry is a very high-end restaurant that charges over $300 for its standard prix fixe meal. Its typical customer can afford to pay the high price for the meal. The chefs at The French Laundry are highly trained, highly skilled, and under the high pressure of exacting work for long hours; accordingly, they deserve the much higher pay. Since the restaurant already pays more than $20/hr, it won't need to raise its wages under this law.
I ate there once, a very long time ago, when the prix fixe dinner was "only" $100, plus $15 for the supplement to upgrade with beluga sturgeon caviar and pâté de foie gras courses. A friend brought 4 different bottles of wines from his personal collection, but the maître d' limited us to the chard and the cab, which weren't on the overpriced wine list, and then charged us $100 for corkage fee. Our waiter screwed up by not getting us a decanter, despite us requesting one from the start of service and after each course, until he finally listened when our filet mignon was served. We had to wait for our red to air; as our steaks were getting cold, we decided to eat them first, and drink our aired wine when the rabbit course came up next. Our friend had gristle on the side of his filet, and he also complained that his lobster claw had a bit of shell embedded in it, and our waiter let our water glasses go empty and still did nothing until we repeatedly asked for water. Two strikes each for our maître d', chef, and waiter.

Lets extrapolate this idea of widespread automation of labor jobs: Step 1: People buy goods and services with money from their jobs.Step 2: automated machines replace workers who then lose their jobs. Step 3: No one is left to buy goods and services, because they have no money, because they have lost their jobs. BRILLIANT!

Do some research on how much money people made for work before feminism was popular. In 1945 a person working at McDonald's would make .45 cents an hour. A family house in LA would cost $4,300. Today that would be akin to making $100 an hour minimum wage and a family house costing $150,000 in LA. That's why people back in the 1940's were having 4+ kids and living well. Today you're might be able to afford a bedroom on a McDonald's job. Corporations, banks and politicians are responsible for this happening in the USA.

Let me teach you something about economics. When I worked fast food I would make a $1000 dollars worth of sales while maybe getting $80 dollars after tax for the day. I get the business owner takes on risk and everything but the employee who made that $1000 should be making more than 8% of the sales that they made and economically speaking labor can take up to 25% and still have the numbers work out. Employees and employers are supposed to negotiate but every place I worked would just pay the minimum wage. As such in lieu of lack of negotiations wage gains have to be made somewhere and that has been done via legislation for the past 10 years. Without this type of legislation the minimum wage would still be $7.25 an hour and McDonald's would still be expensive this is evident as markets with no raise in minimum wage have also seen a disproportionate amount of price increases.

Even $20/hour isn't a living wage. It used to be that a man could work a 40 hour a week job, buy a home, a car, support a wife and children, and mom stayed at home. Now, both people have to work a full time job (sometimes 2), and can't afford to buy any of that, much less afford children. But people are freaking out that the birth rate has dropped below the replacement rate. Nobody is talking about the CEO's of these companies getting multi-million dollar bonuses every year. Shameful. Working people making enough money to thrive buy homes, cars, appliances, new clothes for their kids, etc. Go look up the bonuses of CEO's of McDonalds, Amazon, any big company.
