India needs ATP Tours like 250, 500 and even 1000 masters back....need sponsors and indian eyeballs....to make that happen and grow this beautiful sports in India
Need to develop women's tennis like China has done.
China has usuallly 5-6 players in the top-100 in current times, but no men.
Men's tennis is more serve-centric, so natural height or size becomes a factor.

I didn’t know he was a good player of tennis, because I saw him serve in IPTL with Federer on his side in a doubles match and the mess he made of it was hilarious! Federer had to cover himself with his racquet in order to avoid getting hit by Aamir’s serve.

You don't really make much money unless you are in the top 100-200 of ATP ranking and sponsors pay for your travel, kit, lodging that you really start making money. Being from a middle class family and playing tennis is difficult. Also India needs to have ATP 250, 500 tournaments so there are sponsors and players here don't have to travel abroad in the initial years to gain ATP points and crack top 1000.
The Coach programs in India is not for competitive level, First & formost no free Tennis court are available like how EastAsia country's have.
Unfortunately, marketing in India has worked to sidelined other sports

no way aamir khan was any tennis champion if you look at the way he played in a friendly match with federer, sania etc. in India...he had no technique which any average tennis player would have...was probably default champion in some age group where no one played tennis...bollywood guys are good at spinning stories to suit their agenda

Spin a story? I have hardly ever seen him in any interview talk about his tennis or even his childhood unless pressed by the interviewer. And I have been following his career since the late 80s. That he was Maharashtra champion in a sub-junior category is simply public knowledge that anybody can cross verify. Being out of touch with the game for decades kills your muscle memory too. I think you are confusing Aamir with India’s greatest actor - Modi ji.
