    For the people who are concerned. Please don't! It'll be fine! Trust me!! This can be seen in the following videos.
    I just really want to show you what's happening. How horses react. And what solution can be devised. And again, there are several ways to wean. We have been doing it this way for years.
    And for the other people, thank you all for the sweet and heartwarming comments. For us it's also hard to wean the foals. But at some point, we have to try and see what will happen...
    I try to show you all as much as possible, in that way you understand what we do and what horses do ❤❤❤

    It seems that Uniek had a closer bond with Rising Star than the other mares had with her foals. It was clear that she had a close bond, but so close surprised me. As an experienced mare she was in this situation quite often. This shows that Rising Star was a special foal for her.

      I think that losing Star and then a surprise upon getting Rising Star, that loss, maybe the memory, is what formed this close bond that made separation harder for Uniek. You can see her still protecting RS while out in the paddock with Yvonne. These two were a special pairing and the reason why I started following this channel. My pet cow, Lucy lost her calf about six months ago and as she is a dairy breed she had a lot of milk. I bought a calf off a local dairy farmer and named her Audrey. Audrey would have been veal if I didn't buy her. I was googling adoptions and came across Rising Star and Queen Uniek. Thank you for an amazing journey. It took Lucy three weeks before she accepted Audrey and that was three weeks of me milking Lucy three times a day to feed her. And then I woke up one morning and there they were together. They have been together ever since. They are both rescue cows and can look forward to living their best life together forever.

      @@gretchenkuehler2612 I would argue that Reina was even more attached than Rising Star was. The first thing Reina did after being untied was immediate trying to run out of the stall, most likely to go back to her mother, and then pretty much just stayed there that way. She was quite frantic and fixated upon it, way more than she showed any interest in exploring the new stall, and almost totally ignoring the other foals.
      Weaning might be necessary, but it's also a thing that happens naturally just fine on its own in the wild all the time, without needing to be forced in most cases. So I'm not sure what the rush is. The moms and babies tend to know on their own when it's actually time and will go through a weaning process all on their own when it is. I'm especially not sure why they would wait until 7 months with one foal, but wean the others so much younger at only 5½ months and not even 5 months old. It makes perfect sense for the older one to handle to the separation better, because they were most likely further into their own natural weaning process and more ready to be living independently anyhow.
      RS actually seemed more concerned to me with responding to Reina's distress than with anything else most times though-I think he's had a bit of a horsie crush on her maybe ever since they first met each other through the fence the first time RS and Uniek went outside together and I think RS was totally just showing off for Reina until Uniek started to put herself between him and the fence. He also seemed to want to keep Sanne away from Reina, especially after Sanne kicked out at RS; RS & Sanne kind of seemed to be vying for dominance a little. (Unless I lost track of which one was Sanne and which was Reina.)

    I observe wild horses who live just outside of Whitehorse, Yukon, and with them, foals stop nursing at around 10/11 months if their mother has another foal, 13 to 16 months if she does not. Foals stay with their mothers for two to three years, with fillies sometimes much longer. Fathers keep stallion behaviors in check with their young sons. Yearlings and two year olds dote on their younger siblings. They are an insurance system for the foals should the mother die, they then take over the care. This seems to be the natural way for horses living in family groups within a larger equine community. It is a shame this is not possible in a domesticated setting. Family means so much to horses.
    Update: this was not meant as criticism, just my observations of wild horses, how things are in a wild, natural setting, where horses make their own decisions and live as they have for millions of years. Domestication introduces practicalities that go against what is natural, but it is not necessarily bad, just a fact of life. Horses get a lot of good in return for domestication and these Friesian horses get the best of care and are much loved, more a captive horse could not ask for. Life is hard for horses in the wild, even if it is natural. Beautiful but hard, especially right now with two feet of snow and -45C temperatures :P Early weaning is a good trade for regular food and protection from the elements. There is good and bad in everything.

      @CreekValleyCritters - yeah, I think 5.5 months is TOO young. Poor RS🌟 was still nursing regularly & Uniek was fine with it. I do understand that weaning DOES need to occur, but this seems a bit premature & too early. Rinse Janko & his "Mem" were ready & his hormones were a bit much, but the others....? Awww 😖😢😫😭

      @CreekValleyCritters Před 2 lety +79

      @@mdee860 In a domestic setting un-natural things have to sometimes be done because they are the only practical thing to do. It is sad, but then captive horses get a lot of positive things in return that their wild counterparts do not, e.g. regular meals, fly and parasite control, vet care, protection from the elements and no predators to deal with. Early weaning is just a price to pay for security. Life is hard in the wild, but also good as only here can horses live life as nature intended for them, have complete freedom of movement, make their own choices and live longterm with their families. There is a positive and negative to everything.

    It has been my opinion that Sjirkje had naturally weaned Sanne quite some time ago. Last year both Yvonne and I suspected Sjirkje also weaned Mathilde naturally (stopped letting Mathilde drink or be near) prior to them being separated. Some moms are "over it sooner". Sanne was ready for her own apartment but is not amused with Risy right now. I do feel Uniek is a bit stressed. She can feel what Yvonne feels and knows something is different this time. 🤔 I was very glad to see RStar was not put in immediately with the two other colts. He would have been double stressed dealing with the separation and being bullied by Pieter. I am eagerly awaiting the next video on this series. 😊

      @Pake Jeffje - I definitely think that as Sjirkje has become happier, and more relaxed around humans after her bad experiences with humans as a foal, she has definitely become a more relaxed Mem with her foals, and isn't quite as over protective with them as she was with Jildou (and probably Friea, but didn't know her as a foal). Think that having two Teun foals has definitely helped too 😂😂! She's definitely a good Mem though, and it's going to be strange this year without her having the first goal of the year at the yard.

    I am in tears, sad but happy tears for all the mares but especially for beautiful Uniek, gorgeous Rising Star and Yvonne ❤ This is indeed what weaning is about and Yvonne and her great team have years of experience and certainly knows what's best for the mares and foals 😁 I have been truly touched by Uniek and Rising Star story from the beginning and had many tears, sad plus happy one's on seeing their amazing relationship, close bond and love they have for each other ❤ and how much their story has touched everyone ❤
    I shall eagerly await the next video 😁

    I thought all the Mems looked sad but Uniek was the most vocal about being separated from her boy. The Foals did look a bit confused. I thought Rising Star would be calling to Uniek t;it was Reina calling out to her Mem which didn't surprise me as she was the most attached to her Mem. I was a bit teary-eyed as each one was separated ,especially Rising Star and Uniek. Rising Star and Reina were the youngest but it was for the best that they were separated together with Sanne. Remembering your earlier video the colts were together and the filles together, so no one was alone. I remember when my last child married andleft the nest, I was very happy for him at the same time I wept knowing I would miss him. It is never easy,Yvonne. (((HUGS))) xxx

      @@XmalD73 He was always trying to mount her as he grew up,that was annoying for her. Rinse Janko was a typical boy, teasing and pestering the other foals and I love him too. I have a Grandson and is a tease,pesters his sisters as well;so I pretty much understood RJ's behavior !!! lol

    Uniek says she is sad but not so sad to quit eating, bless her! I hope Reina has done well with the separation, she seems to have been the foal needing to stay closest to mom in this batch. Most always hard, the parting between mother and child, when time for them to grow in their own. ❤️

I'm a softie and while I understand the separation, these two have been so special. Bless you for separating the mares and foals in a caring way. Rising Star is really a handsome colt!

    Aww, Yvonne - massive hugs to you 💕💕💕💕! I can definitely understand your mixed feelings about weaning little (not so little now 😂😂) Risey given the sadness that preceded his arrival, and the fact that the bond between him and Uniek helped to heal both your emotional wounds after little Star was born sleeping 😢😢. Seeing Uniek so upset must have been hard too, as it will have reminded you of her trying to wake little Star up, and then looking for him after he'd been removed from the stable 😢😢. Big hugs to you and Uniek, chocolate for you, and carrots for Uniek 💕💕!
    It was definitely time for the foals to start off in their new life together as teenagers and figure out how to be horses without their Mems. They've all had loving and caring mem's and humans around them, so they'll definitely turn into well rounded, happy adult horses in a few years 😍😍.
    Out of the foals, I definitely think that little Reina found the separation hardest out of the foals, the way she was shouting for Reintje 😢😢. I'm not sure, but I think that I heard Reintje shouting back a few times too before Uniek was shouting for Risey. However, once they all realised that they still had the company of their friends, I bet that it felt like a long sleepover for them, and they definitely had enough room to run about a bit and play together on that huge stable 😍😍😍😍😍😍.

    I just made an observation, an epiphany so to speak.
    Rising Star was not restless in the slightest, he was sometimes glancing at Uniek for sure but mostly, his ears were stiffly pointed forward when he was eyeing Pieter and he was leading the fillies away from stall rods/guard which means that he was protecting them from Pieter because he did not trust him (back then, now he obviously does as they are friends) and maybe because RS saw him as a threat to his little "herd" in the video. Point in case, Rising Star was exhibiting stallion behaviors at a very early age which is cool to see.

    This is a good way to do this. The foals have companions they have known all their life, they can hear their mothers, and the barn is familiar. The only thing that changes is not being in the stall with mom. It's a big change, but it is done kindly. The mares would begin to wean them on their own eventually, but that would involve nips and kicks. This is safer. Besides, the mares need to rest from those energetic foals.

    Interesting 🧐 to learn about weaning! IMO, I’m grateful that you guys at Stal G make an effort to share the videos in this order (one knows beforehand that all the foals are well & have come through weaning with flying colours).
    Another thought:
    🤔 how difficult rearing RS might have been, in unfavourable circumstances (if Uniek had been unwilling). So… with that in mind… 🥰 how RS tried to stay on with Uniek & gratifying to see him superbly healthy & almost as big as a filly of 7 months.

      Because he is the youngest colt, if they waited until he was older he would not have any other colts to share the weaning experience. It was the luck of the drawl that he is so much younger but he looks like he is handling it well so far. I too could watch him with his mem forever.

    • @DoubleDogDare54
      @DoubleDogDare54 Před 2 lety +3

      Waiting would only result in RS being that much larger and stronger and he's still get worked up when taken away from the mare. He doesn't need her physically any longer, so he's ready to start learning to be a grown up horse. This is the best time to start, when they are young and easy to handle and train.

    Oh it's so sad. You can see how lost they are. My heart is breaking for the mother's and foals. Especially Rising Star since I have been so sympathetic to him from the very beginning. The poor thing started out an orphan but then Uniek took him in as her baby. That made me so happy. Now he's loosing his mother again. I know the weaning has to be done but it's still heart breaking.

    Thank you so much for sharing this whole process - it's very intimate and we can see it's difficult at first! Especially for Rising Star and Uniek, I admit to tearing up a bit watching you Yvonne, and seeing Uniek look down the stable towards her son. What an amazing journey they both had, from the depths of sadness to joy at a perfect foster situation. I'll never be able to say how grateful I am (and I know many others) that you've shared it all with us. Funny moment of this video, as you're having difficulty and the foals are confused, Gea looks down as if to say, "I remember when I was weaned too, don't worry, it will all be okay!"

    I am here, wearing my Queen Uniek and Rising Star sweatshirt to hug me, watching over this inevitable moment. I think Uniek and less so, her son, know what's about to happen, they've been watching and listening to the other mares and foals. But once more, they seem to put their trust in you, Yvonne.
    Thank you for your calm, gentle system of weaning. That you make it gradual, from the foals playing together in the pasture, to being put together in the weaning stall, within sight and sound of their Mothers, seems closest to nature but more protective for them. Thank you for eventually putting the newly-weaned mares together in their grassy pasture to comfort and distract each other as their milk begins to recede. They'll be hearing calls from their babies, but not the screams of sudden-separation panic, as happens all too often in the world. It's time for Mother's and their babies to become individuals, and go forward in their lives, as all Mother's and their babies must do. I think your way of achieving this hard separation time is thoughtful, kind and natural.
