Brad, you are a hero of mine for embracing the late Paul Harvey and his "The Rest of the Story".
You have elected upon yourself to reach back in time and replay these wonderful radio shows as if they were originally aired and adding to them a bit after each one. Thank You Brad Dison for doing this so beautifully. Mr. Harvey would be honored. Thank You.

Columbus definitely deserves to be remembered. In fact, your "the rest of the story" of what happened to him in his later years should also be taught.

I've never been accused of keeping close track of current events. It's mostly trash news. And so, I didn't get the relationship between
    Floyd and Columbus. 🤔
That said, I DID learn a ton of things regarding Mr. Columbus. So I thank you for that, Mr. Dison!

Columbus was a pioneer and should be remembered for his bravery. I believe the story about one of the only ships to survive the hurricane was filled with Columbus’s gold speaks about God's justice.

You're exactly right. We, as a society (myself included), usually latch onto the headlines and know little of the facts. As John Adams said, "Facts are stubborn things." That's one of my favorite quotes. I hope you enjoy the books. Thank you for getting them. :)

One place where the people stood firm about the Columbus statue was NYC. The Italian Americans came out and protected the statue from the rioters and City Hall. Columbus Circle is a big city landmark.

Columbus's legacy is certainly complicated. And controversial.
His story was perhaps inflated out of ethnic Italian pride, since Columbus was often thought to be Genoese. I read a recent historian who thinks he was actually Catalan, and working under an alias.
He's sometimes been described as the only one among his contemporaries who realized the earth is round, but educated people since at least Hellenistic times have known the earth is round, and Eratosthenes got a good estimate of the earth's circumference in the third century BC. Columbus (reputedly) claimed the earth is actually much smaller, in order to claim a viable western route to the Indies.
The consequences of his discoveries were dramatic: Spain quickly built an empire by conquest, becoming very wealthy in the process. The natives living in the areas they claimed were mostly enslaved. Columbus had a role in that. Diseases brought from Europe decimated native populations, including populations who had no contact with the Spanish. It hardly seems fair to blame Columbus, or Europeans generally, for epidemics.
There's a lot more to Columbus, both good and bad, than can be encapsulated in a class for elementary schools. He doesn't seem a particularly American hero, any more than Cortez or Pizzaro. There may be better candidates for statues in American cities. But demolishing statues by vandalism is unworthy.
