Back in 2002 our local Ham Radio club, RASON (Radio Amateur Society Of Norwich) received permission and set up a bunch of Ham radios, mounted and hung antennas to the rails, and spent the weekend ‘Activating’ this lighthouse. The only strange noise we heard was finally attributed, after exhaustive investigation to one of our members, WA4VWV loud snoring reverberating through all of the rooms😀. A grand time was had by all that weekend.

Being alone is a powerful thing,, both good and bad. Days and days have I spent seeing no one, exchanging not a word. Or seeing someone and a wave in passing. Meeting someone briefly, a glad exchange of words, and then moving on yet again. The extreme yearning for a special someone to share this with, and the palpable envy when meeting someone who is traveling with their special someone. Being alone is a powerful thing,, both good and bad. I know.

He’s almost 15 now and he hasn’t talked about Ernie in years, I hope this brings back the memories for him. He would always ask what I thought Ernie was doing on holidays and stuff, like this distant relative he never met, he just became part of his childhood. I believe you could actually take board rides to the lighthouse to see it. I’m not sure if that has changed since Covid though. Hopefully it has restarted and some people can get close this summer.

Having pain in my knees I spend almost all of my time inside my house, computer and books and a lot of cofé and sandwiches. I could easily shift to the sea view. A lighthouse is kind of a dream. Yes I do other things that including others, but I can kind of take care of myself. So much to read and learn there is. A wife can be a dream but I can see how a world of one house only can be challenging. And face it, many of us live alone in a city full of people anyway.

I don't know how accurate the story as told was, but it's true that people sometimes have Romantic illusions and dreams that they don't really think through until it's too late. Something can _sound_ fun or relaxing or soothing, but actually be anything but. People romanticize stuff like lonely lighthouses, self-sufficient farming, living in the deep woods or whatever, often without any real experience or knowledge of the actual reality of it.
Before uprooting your whole life or committing to something, you should really try to find out something about the practical reality of what you're contemplating.

There were so many ghost stories about this lighthouse and I always felt a sense of eeriness every time our boat went passed it. I can see how it would drive anyone crazy to have to live all the way out there in complete isolation.

When I was in the Coast Guard, I was asked to take Elizabeth Dole, Wife of Senator Bob Dole and then Secretary of Transportation, out to New London Ledge Light for a tour. She was most interested in the history of Ernie, the ghost.
Ledge light is not very isolated, being about 1 mile from the mouth of the Thames river and close to Ocean Beach. The crews that manned the light enjoyed checking out the ladies on the beach with binoculars.
It was one of the last lighthouses to be automated, because it protected the main ship channel into New London via which many Submarines and other naval vessels navigated.

I don't know, on the one hand, looking at it, I'd say he could have made it with a running start. On the other hand, if he just wanted to drown himself he wouldn't have needed to go to the roof, and if he wanted a sure sudden impact death he would've just stepped off the roof and fell to the concrete instead of trying to reach the water. So yeah, it doesn't quite add up in any direction. Particularly given that, according to my (admittedly limited) research the list of lighthouse keepers does not include an "Ernie."

@@chrisc6857 Hi Chris, thank you for your reply. I think most Lighthouse stories get over romanised. I think lonely light house keepers probably drink too much. I think stumbling off the edge of the docking area was probably this unlucky keepers end. I think the Fog horn wold do me in!

Living there would suit me as long as I had a boat.

If this were something like forestry lookouts where you sign up to work for a season, then go back to your old life, I'd probably give being a lighthouse keeper a shot. Especially if it was one of those things where I could still work from home and do the lighthouse keeper thing as like a side gig. I can't imagine it requires a ton of daily work. Not now that everything is electric anyway. As for a long-term thing, I suppose that would depend on the time off policy. If I wanted to go on vacation for a week, who would man the lighthouse, that sort of thing.

Since the lighthouse is privately owned I find it highly unlikely it is haunted! 😆

I wonder whether you could get cell or Internet there? When automated I guess they had to lay an electrical cable out there because no keeper to change fuel in generator.
