  • Here's instructions for upgrading the hinges of the Rubbermaid Roughneck Storage Shed, using 1/2" threaded rods. The shed pictured is the Rubbermaid Roughneck 5-ft x 6-ft Gable Storage Shed, model FG5L30LWFMONX; but these instructions should work for other sizes in the lineup.
The doors for these sheds are known to be flimsy and can fall off if the shed is not level and perfectly aligned.

Those 72" threaded rods run $25 (for two) at Home depot. If top and bottom tabs are broken off, then you'll need them.
Hint - if the bottom studs are still intact, just do the same as he does, but only drill the holes on the top, then drop in a 3-4" 3/8" carriage bolt, from the top and you have a new hinge and a stable door. Gravity keep the bolts in place.

I just used this on my Rubbermaid shed. It worked great. I did make a small modification to the install. First, I emptied my shed and laid it on its back. My shed was not as deep as the one in this video. This made the install much easier. Then, after drilling the holes in the roof, floor, and doors, it was easy to slide the all-thread rods through the roof, through the doors, then through the floor. Then I installed a washer and nut on the bottom of the shed under the floor. There is a depression in the plastic floor just deep enough for the nut to sit flush. As I installed the floor nut on the rod I spread JB Weld on the threads to lock the nut tight on the rod and screwed the nut onto the rod until he end of the rod was flush with the nut. I waited for the JB Weld to dry. This keeps the nut from loosening and coming off. Then I did the same thing on the roof with a washer and nut and JB Weld. Once the JB Weld was dry I cut the extra rod off flush with the roof nut. I did the same install on the other door. Once everything was done I sat the shed upright and put my stuff back inside. I ready appreciated this video. It solved a real problem for me.

Those doors fall off even if they are perfectly aligned on day one! Have a hot summer day (anything above 80°) and they warp and that's the end of them staying on correctly! They are soo expensive it's not possible to just replace them every year. Thanks for your tutorial and parts list. You and I must be on the exact same wave length 😆 because you used the exact same parts I had been thinking of trying. So glad I'm not the only person fixing these junk sheds! 😊

Amazing how well this video has aged and that Rubbermaid still hasn't fixed this. Finally got one of these setup for the wife -- and of course doors are still an issue. Had debated on long screws thru the roof down into top hinge to simulate an anchor -- but frankly I like this idea better and maybe can get the blood doors to level off closer.

Still relevant in 2022 with the Rubbermaid Large Vertical Shed. I took the doors off, cut just the quarter inch off the top hinge and slid a 1/2" rebar down, which was then cut to size. I left the bottom intact so when the door was reinstalled, the rebar would not be exposed to the elements. The top of the hinge, which slightly exposes the rebar, would be covered by the roof. I did not need to drill a whole through the roof. Total expense: $12 for two 1/2" x 10' rebar.

How many of you have a larger Rubbermaid shed (I have the 7'x7' Roughneck) that has the sides bowing out? I don't have any problem with my doors but the left and right side panels are warped and are bowing out. Rubbermaid says that it is because I hung too much weight on the walls. But I would have to say that the roof is much heavier than anything I hung on the walls. They said they only way to fix is to fully disassemble and let it sit out in the sun to straighten. Wouldn't the bowing happen again, though? Plastic is flexible and isn't rigid, so I would assume that the same thing would happen all over again.

This was so helpful!!! But I was wondering if anyone here also had an idea about how to secure the lock part of the door! We were broken into last week and the first time they stole the whole shed ( I have 3 for my tenants the one they stole was empty waiting for the new tenant) the 2nd time they just twisted the lock so the lock didn't break just the component that holds it did. I am beyond frustrated but hoping you all could help! Any Suggestions... ( I got cameras now all set up lol)

Thanks for watching! It seems to me that, in your application, a more robust storage shed would be in order. Good luck!

Why not just add a middle hinge ?

I don't think the plastic is sturdy enough to support a hinge mounted that way. If you give it a try, let us know how well it works!

@@WoodlawnSound Probably not. I just bought a smaller vertical shed and it had a middle hinge. Interesting.

Looks like you have the same Milwaukee 18V drill I do. I am sure you got rid of those crappy NiCads and obtained NiMH replacements, didn't you, didn't you??? Looks like you dated (6/13) as well...Geek Alert....and same reciprocating saw...must have got same kit I did with circular saw and flashlight.

+John Folk Good eye, DooDad! I have the kit (the flashlight sadly walked at a gig about 10 years ago), and extra drill, and a total of 3 NiMH batteries. I love that I can finish a job without needing to break to "recharge."

I bet that ply wood under shed it rought out now.
Wrong type of wood I see pressure treated boards with plywood ontop (press board) and the the nuts and washers are pointless... if you actually get that threaded rod down in at the bottom far enough just cut rods level with roof and use some silicone to water proof the holes in roof made for rod

Thanks for watching! I did treat that wood after making the video, and it's still in good shape almost 10 years later.

I bought such a shed yesterday and assembled it. This morning when the sun shined the door already warped and a big gap is there. Rubbermaid is knowingly selling a defective product. They should have recalled it. I am planning to sue them.
