Kind of a random observation, but I love how you react to past Ariel with so much compassion and just...normalcy? I feel like so many people (myself included) when they see old videos of themselves are like "ugh cringe why did I say it like that/act that way." And it felt like you were just hanging out with 2012 Ariel! It was delightful!

As a a Christian that grew up Catholic it’s totally okay for you to display your books about atheism. I actually think it’s very interesting to have conversations with people that don’t have any views on religion since I grew up quite the opposite. Don’t be ashamed for your beliefs (or lack of) because at the end of the day it’s your life and no one should judge you for your choices in it.

Amen. I too grew up in a very Catholic environment and I actually believe in it as well, and people often think that they offend me, when saying they don't believe in it, or follow a different religion, when I just find discussions about that incredibly interesting. Since god isn't something that can be proven I actually think it's rather ridiculous to judge people about it.

I read the god delusion ten years ago and loved it at the time. Richard Dawkins has said a lot of sexist and islamophobic things and I no longer look to him for advice. Hitchens died before the atheist community doubled down on being sexist and xenophobic. Of course he's definitely said some harmful things. That said, I am anti-religion. But I think there is a fine line between being anti-religion and anti everyone in the religion.

@@alarcon99 honestly I've never once come across a YA atheist nonfiction book. That said, I'm not sure many of the adult books are necessarily bad.
It's also worth noting after my intial atheist phase, I transitioned from atheist books to books on skepticism which, imo, are better at exploring the nature of belief and what is worth believing.
And as for anti religion books (not YA) God is Not Great is probably a good resource. I *still* haven't read it, but I did obsessively watch Hitchens in debates after he released it where it pretty much explained and defended every piece of that book.

“I am an atheist and I don’t display them in case it offends other people”
I’m really curious about this, but please don’t answer if it’s uncomfortable for you but is it uncommon to be an atheist in Canada, or was it because of your family, or living in another country? Or because it was two more controversial books? I’d heard the USA was very intolerant but I had no idea it was the same in Canada.
I’m Scottish and it’s so weird to hear someone say they’re afraid of people’s reactions. It’s something like 70% of people here are not religious here. Not religious is obviously not = atheist necessarily but most people don’t really care.
Edit: I’m asking because I’m an atheist who is doing a joint degree in religious Studies and English Literature. Learning about other people’s experiences of religion is fascinating!

Took me 16 years to even know that being atheist was an option, even though my father is an atheist. Plus historically, religion has held power of majority and oppression to silence atheist voices. I'm from Canada if that makes any difference. I definitely agree though that these problems would lessen if everyone were more open about their beliefs. Many atheists are very open about the fact that they do not believe in God, in fact from what I've seen, just as open as people who identify with a religion are. Also, many people who are what is referred to as "religious" (which is a generalized blanket term that many people I know don't appreciate in and of itself) have been marginalized for their beliefs as well. I am so so happy.... just to find one more book... and besides that, to find a real book lover word nerd in the world. Who has real books on the shelves. In my country many people have konmaried their word treasure and bookcases as no longer fashionable. Yes, truly heartbleeding. But your intense book enthusiasm and reading fervour is just so inspiring. It is good to know that there are still other soul mates on the road less and less travelled...

Do you have suggestions for other books about atheism? It's something I'm also interested in learning more about, so I'm curious to see what you found interesting.

I don't know about any books. But if you know Rhett and link, they talked a lot about their story (from being missionaries to atheists) on their podcast ear biscuits (ep.224-227 and 229). I just found that really interesting because their view on religion changed so much over time

@@gl0winginthedark I'll definitely listen to that, thanks! I love Rhett and Link, and definitely thought they were still very religious so that's interesting.

I am with you! I don't read WWII fiction either (or any war fiction really), because it breaks my heart too much. However, I read a non fiction book called The Choice by Edith Eger, which is her story of surviving Auschwitz and what happened to her afterwards and it is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It is so sad, but so full of hope! Another non-fiction book about the war strangely enough that I really enjoyed was The Dutch Girl, which basically documents Audrey Hepburn's time in The Netherlands during the war. It's less confronting, but very interesting historically.
I am agnostic by the way - I am incredibly interested in religion and how it has shaped societies, but I am really not bothered whether God (or anything paranormal) exists or not. I will find out in due course - or not as the case may be! ;)

WWII as a phobia is an interesting one! My irrational fear is of anything that lives in water, which is surprisingly prevalent in the world I realised once I had developed this as a teen!! I have no clue where it came from haha. I've read a book about Octopuses which was really interesting but I tend to hide away from them so kudos for reading more about WWII in the past!

I got recommend your channel because I like Emily fox reads :) I'm very glad! I experience the same worry as I never want to offend someone's beliefs and interestingly have not yet met anyone with religious beliefs that worry they would upset my atheist perspective by talking religion :) not been a problem just interesting! Wishing much love, respect, peace, safety, freedom and joy to all :)

Awww Ariel you are such a sweetheart. I personally believe in God and love Jesus, but I would never be offended by the fact that someone is an atheist!!! And obviously it depends, and some people might be offended, but you are allowed to believe what you want to believe!!! I hope you feel more confident ab this in the future (: If it’s important to you, IT IS VALID!

This video was fun! i am also scared of WW2 - of how evil it proves humans can be. Not as bad as having panic attacks in museums, but I hear you say and it sounds very understandable to me. despite this, address unknown by katherine taylor is one of my favourite books. its about 2 friends who write each other letters before and during WW2. One is a jewish american and one is german. They run an art dealership together. the book is 75pages long and its only written in their letters. Wont spoilt it, but its a GEM! sending hugs!
