Surge protectors are designed to take the damage from unexpected spikes in electricity. So when lightning strikes a utility pole near your house, the surge protector takes the brunt of all that extra electricity instead of your TV, computers, gaming setup or whatever else you have plugged into an outlet.
The best surge protectors that I’ve been using for the last few years are
the Belkin 12 outlet PivotPlug, the Accell Powramid, and Tripp Lite TLP128TTUSBB.
What's the difference between a surge protector and power strip?
Power strips look very similar to surge protectors -- and some DO have basic surge protection -- but you need to be careful because power strips can sometimes be erroneously labeled as surge protectors.
So when you’re buying a surge protector, you definitely want to pay attention to the Joules rating. This is a measurement that indicates how much electricity a surge protector can absorb in a single event without failure. You want a rating of at least 1,000 joules.
Here is a chapter-by-chapter breakdown so you can choose the best option for protecting a valuable PC, television and other valuable electronics around your home.
0:00 Intro
0:58 Why I needed a surge protector
1:15 Belkin 12-outlet PivotPlug
2:29 Surge Protectors vs Power Strips
3:27 Tripp Lite TLP128TTUSBB
4:23 Accell Powramid
5:58 Buying Advice
Here’s some liner notes on what to look for when you buying a surge protector:
When you start shopping for surge protectors, you may notice that some advertise “lifetime insurance” of $150,000 to $300,000.
I generally ignore this when I’m buying a surge protector because I’m just generally skeptical about what kind of hoops you would have to jump through in order to make a claim and collect a large sum of money from one of these companies.
That ties in with my second point: Surge protectors do cost a little more than power strips. But you should only buy what you realistically need. Don’t go overboard.
Buying a ninety dollar surge protector might make sense if you’re running an elaborate gaming PC that costs five grand. But it doesn’t make sense for an average home office. A $30 to $40 surge protector with a decent Joules rating will work out fine.

I've got 3 Belkin surge protectors that I've had for years, haven't had any issues even with storms cutting power/lightning in the area. Going to be purchasing 3 new ones just to be safe soon, likely the 12 outlet 3780 Joules protected ones. The devices protected by these are 2 $1k smart TVs, as well as a $1500 Gaming PC - it's definitely worth a $30-90 purchase to protect these very expensive electronics.
Needed the first one to solve my adapteritus, thanks for the video I made sure to use your affiliate link
Thanks so much for the recommendation. I feel like this is going to be a great addition to my set up. I've been needing extra room for such a long time, and the the Belkin Pivot Plug looks like it'll be a good solution to my Adapteritis!!! I made sure to use your affiliate link too.
not a lot of videos out for this type of product review. this video is better than others i have come across
Thanks! Appreciate it.
Thank you sir I was sold as soon as I saw the first one 😁
Bought the 12 plug. Thanks bro!
I remember back in 2018 there was thunderstorm where I was living. I had a at the time a $600 maybe $700 dollar Nvidia graphics card. The thunder storm happened unexpectedly while I was out buying groceries. I did not have a surge protector. That was a very dark and sad day for me when I got home lol. Looking back on it now is funny. But at the time my heart and wallet was hurting!
Ouch. That one would sting for me.
Coming from a gamer, I would be crying in my bed if that happened. This PC was a gift to me and i will NOT let it be surged.
@@ExistOrDie a surge happened when I plugged my computer plug in today. There was a huge shock I got so scared thankfully it's ok since I had a surge protector
@@rajjgaming5919 That would scare me so badly I wouldn't even turn it on.
@@ExistOrDie mhmm yeah I understand that. Thankfully as I said surge protector and Corsair PSU. I am also going to be making sure the switch for extender is off plug in my stuff then turn it on as the surge happened when I plugged my computer plug in
Really informative and helpful video 👍
Thanks very much. Appreciate it.
Favorite one of all time the Belkin having one put in each room.
Very Helpful. Thank you
You're welcome. Thank you for watching.
Nice I never knew about this
Also check the "clamping voltage". And, lightning is more than these can handle. These are for when your fridge or other heavy-draw appliance turns on and off - creating a current spike. Not for lightning...
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this. Just ordered the Acell pyramid through your link.
Thank you. Appreciate it.
No surge protector will protect against a nearby lightening strike. If the lightening is close the best protection is unplugging your equipment.
@Gamer121 They can't keep taking those lightening volts too many times. Don't put all your trust there. After 2-3 strong volts, you might re-think just simply unplug your valuables.
It's interesting you say you're skeptical about the $150k warranty thing. I saw a review or two for tripp lite's stuff and someone had sent in their protector that caught on fire and failed after a surge. tripp lite told them their testing said there was no evidence a surge happened despite the guy sending them something from their power company confirming their was a surge at the exact time that happened.
Your video help me.
I have anker with 4000 joules and 12 outlet what do you think is it better than these or same
Furman is what I recommend. There one of best in the business.
How big is the belkin I have a cable management box that’s 16 by 6.1 will it fit in there?
Your Amazon link for Tripplite isn’t working
thank you for not being a bot.
Surge protector or UPS?
Had that belkin pivot SP. It fried and didn't do much to protect my electronics. Belkin has a terrible customer service dept. and rejected my claim.
Also had a $30 10-plug surge strip I bought at Lowe's, it's fine and so are all of my electronics plugged into it.
Just make sure your receptacles are all properly grounded or install a GFCI receptacle at the start of your circuit if you can trace the circuit.
The Tricky Outdoorsman: Were you running things on it like a blow dryer, air conditioner, etc.? What were you running on it at the time of failure?
@@lazurm nope. Just a lamp, my Xbox, TV, laptop, router
@@the.tricky.outdoorsman How old was the Belkin? Could it have protected you many times previously and simply died? Did you observe the green light that indicates that it was working, just prior to the event?
Is it okay to use these with 1450W blender and 500W Stand Mixer?
What would be good for a beauty salon ? Dryers , clippers , hair blowers ?
Erica Williams: Those type of devices don't really need surge protectors as their circuits aren't as sensitive as computer type circuits.
I had to rip out the ground plug on my computer power cable to get rid of a ground loop hum in my usb audio interface. It sucks. will a surge protectot help now that i have no ground power cable for pc?
Hi I have the JackyLed tower surge protector it has 14 outlet so you think my tower can handle my gaming pc I’m going to build in a few months right now I just have my router and my PlayStation RGB lights plug in and my wireless phone charger
so you did not even open them up and look inside , use a insulation tester, or put on a electronic load ,, you just took their word for it as to the specs
this!!
I just bought a new 75" TV what is the best surge protector to use for it. I live in a old house and I do get a lot of surgees
Belkin has some good ones. Theres a few for $35-50CAD. And the ones that were shown in this vidoe too. If your tv was super expensive I'd go for getting a surge protector that has at least 4000 Joules surge protection.
Hello sir do you know a surge protector for home that tells you when it’s time to replace the unit thru the indicator light? Thank you
Trust me … You’ll know when it’s time to buy a new one 👌🏼
Do you know any good surge protectors that have long cords because there is no outlet near my tv and monitor ?
bannana bread: How much longer would you need your cord to be if the surge protector's cord is 8 feet long?
the apc surgearrest 8 outlet one has a 8 foot cord. Not sure how long you need the cord to be
Have a camera record the surge protector 😎
I want some non bulky 3 prongs maybe 2 prongs surge protector
I just bought me a new surge protector from Amazon, and I also bought a portable generator for my TV and other household items. What's the best surge protector and how long of a lifespan would they have compared to others ?
Hopefully you got a inverter generator. Standard generator took out a deep freezer and a baby formula maker of mine.
Surge protectors can only protect once. They are sacrificel in a sense. Never use the same surge protector after it has stopped one surge as it will provide no further protection, and this is with all surge protectors. Hope this helps
If you have a baby at home, which one do you recommend for safety reason?
Jits electronics got a good one for kids
anyone know how good Westinghouse is??
3:02 "You need to be careful..." as he is trying to plug something in with his finger wrapped around to the electrified side of the adapter...
Haha I've been a big proponent of surge protectors since I bought my first hd tv back in 2006. The guy at the best best recommended a $40 surge protector and I thought he was a complete wack job, totally ignored his advice and bought a $5 "surge protector" from big lots. First thunderstorm of the season that year country fried my tv along with the big lots surge protector :D
Silldozer: The best protection against lightening, especially for sensitive electronics (even if hooked up to a surge protector), is unplugging the unit. Hard to do if you're not home though.
Also you buy and install a surge /breaker protector into the wall outlet and you can control whatever outlets in your house if they are hit to shut down. You may need an electrician.
It’s always the one you think are crazy that end up being the smartest
I only need 4-6 outlets. I use 2 computer monitors, and sometimes a charger for my laptop. Would the Acell pyramid work? I read that computers should have 2000 joules and a 300 clamp rate? What do you recommend?
they say 2000 joules acr makes em 2000 jouges
does the belkin surge protectors able to connect from my coaxial cable in (split from my modem/router) and put the ethernet cable to my PC?
Odd question @Cord Cutting Report, why did you record in 1080i in 2020?
What about clamping voltage? I can't for the life of me find surge protectors in the 430v or lower range.
Have you found/recommend a good surge protector?
@@isaiasdocable I caved and went with commercial electrics Home Depot carries. The clamping voltage is 500v, but they have a UL certification and the various options are ensured up to various dollar amounts if they fail and your hardware is fried.
@@clydemarshall8095 thanks
Your Tripp-Lite recommendation has a clamp voltage of 800/800/800. Its nothing more than a glorified power strip.
You really don't want over a 8 plug protector anymore than that you take a chance of overload because most are only 15 amps and even at that its to much anymore than 10 amps is not safe the best is you keep it more fire safe.
is it me or the screen on the video is like zipping or wiggling the image
