My wife and I met here whilst she was a student, we got married, we live here. She has a spouse visa. I am fortunate enough to earn over the threshold but it’s just utter barbarism from the Tories. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this and I wonder if it’s only a matter of time before we fall victim to their xenophobic hate too.

I am a French citizen living and working in the UK as a French teacher. Having had to deal with Brexit consequences was mentally draining enough and now this… My Fiance and Spouse Visas cost us more than 6000 pounds altogether back in 2021. I am due to renew my visa next year, yesterday I was driving back from work and contemplating the idea that I might have to go back to France even though I am working and contributing only because my partner is not earning enough. We are now holding on to the hope that we will be able to use joint incomes for renewal but my heart still breaks for all international couples that will suffer immensely from these measures.

This happened to my son 12 years ago. At the time he didn't reach the income threshold to bring his non EU wife to the UK. However because he was then a EU citizen he obtained residency in Spain and Spain allowed him to settle there with his wife.
That option is also now not open to UK citizens.

I am a Scot born and raised, female, worked most of my life in local govmt, 25 yrs, then nhs, 10 yrs, which was the worst of the worst at least in local govmt there was an opportunity for improvement and iended up with my best job ever which was technical officer with waste management . But i have never, ever in my life earned more than £26k!! Nhs, as i say, was the worst for pay and future prospects. Soul destroying place to work. Managed 25 staff and still knly earned that amount. So who r they gonna get for £32k. Director jobs in nhs r £100-£150k. The range they r discussing r jobs like planning officers, at a certain level, etc. Not the vacancies that r needing filled such as nurses at entry level, builders etc.

I’m in a similar situation to Lee, my fiance is coming over this December on the fiancé visa but we have to rush getting married now, the earliest we can do that is beginning of March because we have to wait 70 days before being allowed to marry, I can only hope and pray that there is a transitional period and that we get the spouse visa application sent off quick enough. This is so cruel to those of us who just want to have a family with someone who is a foreign national. So incredibly cruel.

British people currently on benefits because they're not well enough to work are going to have their benefits stopped and the DWP will tell them to go do the jobs no one wants to do. It's a brilliant idea, until you think about it for more than two seconds. If someone is not well enough to work, that isn't going to stop being the case just because the DWP decides to call them something else. So these unpopular jobs are going to be filled with people who really can't do them. That's going to do wonders for the country.

Lee, i feel so sorry for you and am in exactly the same situation as you also in NI. As James rightly says, get yourself an Irish passport you will be able to get married and live there with your wife if you want to, also at a fraction of the visa cost (I actually think it was close to nothing for a spouse visa in ROI) compared with the UK costs (over £4 grand now plus the new £38k salary requirement). I have a friend there who did just that last month. Unfortunately the way the UK treats its citizens leaves a lot to be desired so take your birthright and get your Irish passport 🇬🇧🇮🇪

I'm an American and I've lived in the UK on a spouse visa. Overall 8 years ago it was a total of 9000 pounds. I feel that the culture and economy of American has come to end stage capitalism. We have made huge mistakes and are really imploding as a country but so many rich people have gotten so much richer riding our death wave that we have started to influence the UK. You guys have started to adopt this attitude that each person much be completely responsible for their own survival. If they can't do that then they don't deserve to survive. I don't know why the UK can't look at the disaster America has become and be warned off of going this route. We are not mean't to live and grow alone. Everyone needs help sometimes and we should never give that up. This idea that if you need help you are lazy is just abhorrant and these people need to learn a lesson from us and not repeat this mess.

My situation is as follows - I met my wife in Pakistan and have a 6 month old baby with her who was also born in Pakistan.
I am British born and bred and went back to London to study for a masters to increase my earning potential. Because I have child it would have been £18600 + £3800 = £22400.... perfectly manageable.
    Now it's £38700 + £3800 = £42500....which is going to be very difficult as a new graduate.

Im glad James brought it up because at the time I was bewildered and like many others thought it might be a way to report wayward cones that had somehow lost their pack (who were all doing their duty, clustered around road works ) and by calling in the location of the poor lonely lost cone it could be caught and returned to the fold.

The problem is the average Brit doesn't understand the visa system in the UK, and many don't realise the difference between those arriving her on a work, spouse, student visa, refugees and illegal immigrants. Many especially those who are anti foreigner just lump them all together and think they have no legal reason for being here.
I think the idea that the Tories are trying to make life difficult for the next goverment after the election is starting to look like it might true, especially if you subscribe to the notion that the Conservatives are unlikely to remain in power. Put in place legislation that in a year or two will make life difficult for those who replace the current idiots in power.

I chose to retire at 60 in 2018 rather than wait for my state pension at 66. I had an occupation pension forecast and counted up my monthly direct debits. When the amount of pension was enough to cover the DD’s and my savings could cover the luxuries, I decided it was time to leave work. 5 years later, I have no regrets. Next year when I finally get my oap, my income will more than double. I am lucky as I have no rent or mortgage to pay.

Echo chamber in here. I don't agree with the Rwanda proposal nor the dependents not being allowed in for NHS staff. We also can't continue with 750k net migration so what's the answer?

    • @mickreaddin4979
      @mickreaddin4979 Před 8 měsíci +2

Well I know what the answer isn't; you don't stop the workers we need in the important sectors we need, NHS, care etc. Investing in infrastructure - housing, schools, hospitals - would help alleviate the problem somewhat. Getting down the backlogs would allow us to remove those that haven't made the cut, which in turn frees up spaces for those that we do need.

I think the Irish guy should seriously consider moving to Malaysia because he might find a better standard of living there. Otherwise, his hopes rely on the english electorate doing the right thing by voting this government out next year and the new Government repealing these immigration rules.

Then the answer is to put significant sums of money into training schemes, yes? The problem with my solution... Tories never want to fund such things and neither do employers. Until that changes, you're going to need outsiders to fill the positions to help drive the economy. Not rocket science!

This policy is not designed to keep the population happy but the backbenchers. The New Tories group, which includes people like Lee Anderson, want to cap refugees to 20000, student visas to be limited to the "brightest" by making some universities ineligible, end temporary visas for health and social care workers, close the opportunity for graduates to stay in the country after graduation. m Remember what Stamer said at the conference "“I have to warn you, a party that has so completely severed its relationship with the future, that is prepared to scorch the earth just to get at us. They will be dangerous,” "
