  • I complete my series of Eric Rohmer’s Comedies and Proverbs with a discussion of Boyfriends and Girlfriends. I mixed up the boyfriends and girlfriends at one point which I thought was amusing.

This is my favorite Rohmer film. Followed by The Green Ray, Love in the Afternoon, My Night at Maud’s, and A Tale of Winter.

Great list! I re-watched A Tale of Winter last month and loved it even more. Rumors abound that the Four Seasons quartet is soon to be released by Criterion. Thanks for commenting.

Roger great video. I watched this earlier today. Wow i loved this film. It made me feel so warm and happy. It was beautiful, light, playful and charming, funny, relaxing and romantic. I love the cinematography, the colours were amazing. I love the simplicity of everything. The camera shots. It's not too long. Every scene mattered. I loved the suburb where it was filmed. I loved the segment in the middle at the lake it was beautiful. I enjoyed all the characters especially Blanche and Fabien. They were perfect for each other but they didn't know it till the end. I really like slice of life movies and they don't get better than this one. The ending was perfect. I have the 6 film arrow set. The remastered picture on this film blew me away the colours pop. I highly recommend this set. Another masterpiece one of the best films I've ever seen.

So happy to hear how much you liked this one, Gary. If I had to pick one Rohmer to take to the desert island this would be the one. You describe the scenes so vividly I may have to do another re-watch soon. The ending is I think Rohmer’s most joyful and as it is not overstated even more luminous. Only the ending of A Tale of Winter can compete in that regard. Thanks for the great post!

I woukd probably pick this movie to take to a desert island too Roger. It's a joyful and understated movie. Like a warm blanket. I love the scenes when not much is happening for example when Blanche and Fabien are walking on the tow path, windsurfing on the lake, when Blanche was following Alexandre and Fabien around the centre. I even enjoyed the short scene at the French Open Tennis. The scene at the pool at the beginning. Blanche looking out the window of her apartment. Blanche walking around a mall. I've been thinking about this film a lot since yesterday. I think this one will be hard to beat.

I look forward to seeing this one, I’ve only seen The Green Ray from Comedies and Proverbs. I really enjoyed it, it’s my favorite Rohmer so far. I think I’ll like this series more than the Moral Tales. Thanks for the recommendation!

This is my favorite Rohmer series partly because he purposefully focused on ordinary people and their romantic challenges with humor and insight. They never cease to fascinate me. Thanks so much for commenting and I hope you enjoy B&F when you catch up to it.
