    It's been many years coming. I finally had a chance to play this twice over the weekend. Breaking from my usual format, I give my expectations of the game before playing followed by my initial impressions and review after playing.

    In my last game, the Bene Gesserit player had managed to work the game so that the Atreides (me) would attack them on Turn 6 for the win. They revealed their battle plan and had sacrificed 0 troops, with a 2 point leader and no treachery cards. I was so happy for about 2.4 seconds, until they revealed their prediction.

    Do not be deceived that some lowly game designer created Dune TBG, for it was Muad'Dib in his contemplation that created published and distributed the game with a single thought.

    Hi Joel, not really into commenting. But I want to say I loved the before/after format here. Wonderful for games especially because it shows how knowledge about the game and playing experience differ. Thanks so much!

    Great video. It would be fun if you did other Avalon Hill classics like Magic Realm, Republic of Rome, or Advanced Civilization in a similar format.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety +1

      I had Advanced Civ, but really wasn't interested in playing it after having played most of the newer Civ games, notably Clash of Cultures. I just wish Clash went up to six player. I'd love that! I played a sci-fi version of Republic of Rome, Galactic Destiny. It was awful. I'm sure Republic is better, but that kind of put me off of it. I should really dig back and find some other treasures. Dune was really the main game from that era I was interested in.

    Good video, thanks for making it. I agree with you about how crucial the flavour is to the game - I've got much more interest in this than in either Rex or Diplomacy, both very similar game styles, just because Dune is a book that affects me very deeply every time that I read it

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 6 lety

      Thanks. Likewise. Need to read it again (and play this again).

  • @TheDiscriminatingGamer

    Thanks, Joel. You mentioned Rex at the end. How do you think the two games compare in general? Are they very similar, or did the changes FFG made change it up too much?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety +2

      I've never played Rex. We discussed trying it. We definitely want to try it, but the theme is a put off. Not really a "put off", but it's not Dune. From what I've read from the rules, it's pretty much the same game :)

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer Před 9 lety

      Drive Thru Review I like Rex a lot, though I agree Dune would have been a better theme. Love the books.

      Not sure about a full review. It's not really changed all that much really. But, we are planning on playing it. I'll mention it on the podcast if we do (if not a full review).

    So it sounds like what you're saying is that if you order a pnp copy like you have, one of the player shields will be printed with the wrong rules?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety

      Not necessarily wrong, just missing the word "random"... which is all throughout the rulebook. Should say "secretly and randomly" instead of just "secret".

    Joel, could you see the Dune IP being used in the COIN system?

  • @bijanajamlou5152
    @bijanajamlou5152 Před 9 lety

    Thinking about the main mechanics that make the DUNE special for me (alliances and asymmetric special abilities) I would say that the game that comes closest to its feel i would say is magic the gathering emperor format. There there are 2 teams against each other and each player has a different deck (could play the same but when we played we just picked random decks). It would be interesting if another boardgame could redo that somehow but in a shorter playing time (45-1h)

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety +1

      That's a very good observation. I think the new Dune: Dice Game looks like it might get to what you want. There's also Cosmic Encounter too :)

    Would love to see a review and comparison with Rex. Am a huge Dune fan and have a poor p&p copy. Also have Rex and I feel FFG did a great attempt at a remake, for the most part.
    Would love a copy of Dune like yours. Does the company you got yours from make everything, the board, dials, tokens and cards? Or was it a once off for you?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety +1

      Pretty sure they do everything. There is definite interest in the group to play Rex. So, I might make that happen when it gets reprinted. I think we're all curious about those mechanical balance tweaks.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety +1

      It did go through. I've had a chance to read the rules. Won't get it played for a month or so. Everything seems "pretty much" like Dune. I didn't see any of the changes (all minor imo) that set of any alarms. Proof is in the pudding though :)

    Thanks so much for doing this review. I have my own half-completed PnP copy, maybe this will give me the inspiration to finish. I've procrastinated because I don't have a gaming group large enough to really play the game properly. Mostly making it for sentimental reasons.
    I think just like the Dune universe itself, the political meta-game seems very important... which fits the theme perfectly. This is in stark contrast to many modern Eurogames where logic and mechanics are crucial, but politics is downplayed. During my first gaming heyday in the late 80s our group would plot, bluff, & backstab all night with our favorite games (Civilization, Illuminati, Diplomacy) and often the overt strategy & mechanics were often secondary. Im not sure that this is still so common?

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety

      It's not. It is a bit more in some of the quicker social deduction games like The Resistance, One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and so on.

    The family relationships issue really put me out of A Game of Thrones the board game. In the game its all table politics in the books/tv show there is a heavy dose of context.

    • @DriveThruReview
      @DriveThruReview  Před 9 lety

      Ya. I definitely see that. I don't know how you incorporate "epic sweep" with interpersonal relationships in a game without it being 10 hours long. I love the Game of Thrones board game, but 100% agree with you.

    • @EarlofChutney
      @EarlofChutney Před 9 lety +1

      Drive Thru Review There is a pod expansion for AGOT that significantly improves the game, Feast of Crows (the other pod expansion is ok too). It adds hidden objective cards that give your negotiations and stabs some game context. It still doesn't really tie it to the story but its the angle i would take. You could add a deck of objective cards that adds some limited scripting on who can ally with who when. The downside to scripting of course is that if players know the script its less interesting.
