This is the Moment I Found a Whale Shark & Marlin: An Amazing Learning Experience From Above & Below

  • In part 3 of my travels to the Sea of Cortez, I come across a large striped marlin, and I find a whale shark in the shallows. Both are fish I didn't expect to see. It is the Sea of Cortez after all, the biodiversity and beauty of this place did not disappoint.

The colors, the lighting & pattern of the whale shark, along with the view of a marlin (not struggling with a fisherman) just leave me in awe!!!

I've never seen footage of a whale shark in such shallow water , that was excellent . I once swam with a whale shark , it let me hold its tail fin and be swept side to side as it moved so gracefully , a wonderful experience , no stress to the shark , in fact it came back over and over for an hour or so .

@@AKbaby89 It's absolutely true . North eastern Australia , 100 nautical miles offshore in mile deep water . We were out there chasing tuna , stopped for lunch on a quiet day , felt the boat move a bit ( flat calm day ) went out on deck and saw the shark with a bit of anti fouling paint on its nose where it had a scratch . Myself and another guy grabbed our flippers and masks and had the time of our lives for an hour or so . Years ago now but a lifetime memory .

5:05 Indeed, the pattern is its "fingerprint". I've submitted all my whaleshark and Manta footage to the Whaleshark / Manta Research teams in the Maldives. They keep a catalogue of all individuals based off markings and sighting locations through the years. If you submit footage of an undocumented individual, you get to name it! But equally cool is getting a reply from them telling you the name of the whaleshark/Manta you've spotted and how old they are.

This is soooo beautiful. I remember my experience snorkeling with whalesharks. It was terrifying at first being in open water, with such huge creatures. I clung to the boat...then gradually got the nerve to just float on the surface, looking down on them. One swam really close to me, but we were not allowed to touch them. So majestic.

Even after jaws 🤗 Getting in the water was difficult for some time. I began reading to learn as much as possible. My dream was to be a marine biologist. I became a nurse instead. I found so much joy in alk my years with patients. When shark week began 33yrs ago I was glued to the tv. Like a sponge and haven't missed 1 year since then.

You sir are very lucky to be able to see these glorious animals. Now I sometimes think it is OK to catch a marlin, but never ever to kill that marlin. Take photos sure, but remove the hook, swim it until it is ready to go, then with as big a smile as you can muster watch your marlin swim back into the ocean. Believe me the pride you feel stays with you for ever. Sir I am so proud of you to be able to take such stunning photos of this young whale shark, and to swim beside it, my mind just can’t comprehend how beautiful they are. All I can say to you is how happy and blessed you must feel. There is a comment from an awesome person in your comment section who says “ why not stop fishing for one year” while this is a great idea, the rich people would collapse from shock. Well done young man you are awesome. Cheers and stay healthy and COVID free free.
