  • Moving DIRT! Using the Kubota KX057-4 Excavator to load Moritz Dump Trailer being pulled by the MX5400 Tractor, Melissa thought she was up for the challenge but reconsidered once she realized how much weight she would actually be pulling.

Hi Mike, Mike from Salem Ohio. I have the same trailer on our Tree Farm. The battery for me just did not cut it for some applications. I modified my the hydraulic hoses on my trailer so that I could plug into the tractor. Now I can run all day with the tractor if I want without concerns of the battery going dead. By adding some quick connect to the hoses I can switch back to the trailer pump for use with the truck in just a couple of minutes.

You have been moving a lot of dirt to the outside edge of the hill that your house and pole barn is built on to get a larger flat area on top of the hill. We had the same situation. Before we built any thing on our hill, we made the top of the hill flat and much bigger by using a bulldozer. First, we pushed the top soil to the sides so to save it. Afterwards, we flattened the top of the hill with the bulldozer. Lastly, we pushed the top soil back onto the top of the new, larger flat top of the hill.

Good afternoon Mike&Melissa, I would just like to say that your progression for this building is going well and that you have most definitely got some work todo to bring tat plot of land up to grade, because since you pointed at your down spout from your guttering I can now see how much of a slope that you have going away from the building and about what Melissa said about driving the tractor and trailer I think 🤔 that the decision that Melissa made was a good one, because if you are not sure then by all means don’t do the task at hand and because of this there will be no accidents and as we all know DANGER never ever takes a day OFF.
See you guys next time at home with the Morgan’s and until then stay safe and look after each other.

We have hills here too, and I had an interesting experience a few days ago trying to get a big lime buggy with 4 tons of lime in it up one of those rough steep trails. My 3/4 ton diesel 4wd truck with big off road tires began spinning about 1/4 of the way up. I was able to get the rig backed down without jackknifing and discovered that the lime buggy had a flat tire. After fixing the flat tire, I decided to try again. Second try I made it, but there was a lot of white knuckles, wheel hopping and bouncing going on. When a load weighs more than what you’re pulling it with, you’re asking for trouble, especially where traction can be poor.

I have a larger dump trailer and a Kubota M7060 tractor. I was able to make some changes to the hydraulic hookups and can now connect the rear hydraulic unit on the tractor directly to the dump trailer and control the dump function with the tractor. No battery to keep charged and it dumps and returns much faster. It works very well. Just make sure your hydraulic components on the trailer and tractor match. Cost me about $400 and I did the install myself.

Have you considered a concrete pool? Then you don't have to wait for a plastic liner. You could be digging the pool right now. The blown in concrete pools are interesting. They do all those fancy pools with funny shapes. There might still be time for concrete pool? If you were digging now to pour walls, could be ready soon. Call around & explain the situation. You might be surprised and get it done for the wedding?
If you want to haul more in trailer up the hill, you need a larger vehicle to haul trailer. Can you use the truck? Bigger loads = Less trips Leaves the tractor up top to push soil. Mellissa can push & pack moved materials on the top of the hill. Team work pays off in saved time.

Think smart and work smart! It's the only way go! You both have great communication with each other. A very good trait to always have in a successful relationship. Very smart to stay off the tractor, most equipment, truck and even cars, don't work very well going backwards when it comes to braking. And we would hate to have anything to happen to you Melissa. Be safe!!

I'll try this again. If you put a retaining wall on the two sides of the tank away from the building you would save yourself a ton of work and time.

Take the doors off, and make the loading area so Melissa doesn’t have to back into that spot. She could run 4-5 loads before she becomes two-blocked at the dump site... or, she can try backing into the dump site after that.... level everything out and start over. 1 less bucket until she gains confidence in the equipment and herself. Love watching you two working together... common goals.

Mike, try loading the trailer a little farther forward to give the tractor better traction and you can leave the gates open. Maybe time to plug the tractor into the trailer for power. Good luck.

Hey Melissa, you can do it! It just takes practice and experience and you can only get those things with giving things a try and gaining that valuable experience! I have a feeling from watching the channel that there's really nothing you can't do based on what I've seen so far! Amazing family and fun to watch! All the best, thanks, Brian

Mike - you need a wireless kit for the dump - they are great and let you operate the dump out of the cab.

You already know this, but rigging a brake control in the cab would be fairly simple, and leave you more options for the future. Keep digging Mike! Keep digging......Love it

I loved hearing your story about the Lewistown job. I worked in the Mifflin County Industrial Park at that time and I remember that excavator you mention and agree that was an enormous machine. It would be on top of the ridge as I pulled out of work and it looked big even from that distance. I remember a friend of mine there telling me that they blew a hydraulic hose on that machine and he needed to make a new one and it was thousands of dollars.

Mike, as someone that has run a lot of heavy equipment that Excavator has one large boom for that size machine, if I was 20 years younger I would buy one.

You guys are great together. Love the fun give and take ("remember when you backed that car into Hannah's..."), and the fact that Melissa just about has Mike trained, after thirty-something years of marital bliss. :) I used to be hard on my wife, until I learned she was indispensable, and pretty much the center of the family universe. Older is usually smarter. The pool postponement is a bummer, but it's gonna be a great summer for you guys, anyway.

Mike I've had a gooseneck dump trailer for 20 years about the same size as yours. I'm comfortable hauling 5.5 tons with 3/4 truck. Just a suggestion, each time you load it add an extra bucket. Load that thing up, your only going a short distance. Also just bought a NOCO Geniuss 5 amp auto smart charger. connect to battery, its auto, won't over charge. trailer ready when you are. don't forget to unplug when in use.
