    API stress coat. It's a water softener for fish tanks. Put a very small amount like half tea spoon every time you water. It takes chlorine away from the water which causes calathea to go crispy around edges.

    Wildfern, I wanted to thank you, for putting me onto an awesome on-line Plant seller, in Ontario. I ordered 2 plants from them. 1st Ever on-line plant order for me. I had watched a video of your's from 11 months ago, and you said the name of the nursery. So I looked it up, and the lady actually called me, because of an ordering Glitch. I mentioned How I found out about them, through you. She said They love you and really enjoy interacting with you. Thought YOU might like to hear that. :)
    I was born and raised in Sidney on Vancouver Island, moved off the Island at 44 yrs old, I still miss the ocean and the beaches and the Smell of the ocean. Wouldn't go back though, it's changed too much, and I want to remember it, the way it was.

    I just saw that Calathea in the store today, I didn't buy it, but wow, yours looks a lot better!! I've got about 150-ish in my office - lots of Calatheas and Ferns, and have them all together right at my desk, so "in sight." I recommend treating Calatheas exactly the same way you care for a fern, exactly. - And yeah, for decades I've been a chronic under-waterer & never-feeder to my plants detriment, but I found a method that some people won't like, bc aesthetic this & aesthetic that. I have a small white plastic name tag in each plant & I write the month & day on it every time I water. What a Game Changer!!! No more sticking my finger in constantly! Now I walk around & just peak at the tag & can tell when I should actually start checking for real. Now my plants are doing much better and I am way, way less stressed about problems, but I am also switching my Calatheas to water. I've never used pon. I'll be interested to see the updates on this :)

    Hi Fern!
    I have had this plant for about a year now. Still in soil. From what I have noticed, you absolutely cannot let the plant dry out while the new leaves are in their straw stage and hardening off or you’ll get the speckles on the outer part of the leaves. I have been using Foliage Pro liquid fertilizer at a weak strength and have not been getting those spots as long as I keep up with not letting the plant dry out.
    I’ve never used pon but if your pon is drying out maybe increase the watering before it gets to the empty line and see if that helps 😊💚
    I loved seeing this video and watching your journey with this plant. I became obsessed with this plant after seeing it on your channel. It took a over a year but I came across it in a local grocery store. I was so nervous about this one being beyond my ability but have found it to be a lot easier than I expected. I think you’re on the right path and she’s going to reward you with lots of beautiful growth 🥰

    I swear by growing marantaceae in pon. I have there 2 marantas (for 3 years in it now), my stromanthe triostar, and 3 calatheas (1 year in pon) - it´s the same like with alocasias. They love it. However, I don´t recommend putting any plant from soil to water - it killed my 2 calatheas (Makoyana, Musaica) that rotted away beyond saving, while 3 calatheas did well. I´d go from soil straight into pon - I find it much safer.
    Your calathea slowed down for a while - but that´s normal. It happened to all my calatheas too after the transfer. They are working on their rhizomes, when they seem to slow down - it´s only temporary. I´m sure your calathea will do well in it 🙂

    So glad to watch this video after a tough day. I hear about calatheas not liking tap water so often, I'd love to see you do another experiement: take 2 calatheas (maybe cuttings from this plant?) and use tap water on one and filtered/tank/deionised water for the other. And maybe test your tap water to see how hard it is first? It'd be really interesting to see the results

    Hi! :) As for the crispy leaves, it stopped happening when I started adding a fish conditioner (used for aquariums) to the water.
    I have always had this problem with Chlorophytum Green Orange and Microsorum crocodyllus, but now I don't see it anymore - and I regret that I got rid of calathea before I discovered it.
    I've got the idea from the "Sheffield Made Plants" channel, he talks about it a lot and says that there is a difference on Kalatea too. I recommend everyone to try it, it works for me :)

    A very timely video for me right now. I have ordered this plant from an on line grower and I am a little nervous with this plant because I killed one about 3 years ago and I don't want to kill this one. I have upped my planty game with various new grow lights all over my house so I think I have a better shot at making this plant happy and I have been watching a lot of videos about pon and I was thinking this plant might do better for me in pon so I am very glad to see that it does work and it did does well in this media. I think this calathea is my favorite too!! Although, Sheffield Made Plants in the UK has an amazing Rufibarba (Elgergrass, he calls it). It's just gorgeous so I have my eye out for one of those next.

    Thank you for sharing the video, the plant is looking great. I believe that some issues like crisping can relate to water quality, they don’t like hard water which I have in my area of the UK so I use a filtered water and this resolved the issue for me. Good luck, hope it continues to grow well for you. 🙂

    i had the same kind of damage on the leaf (crispy spots inside the top of the leaf) - my conclusion - that happened because of lights. it had started on the new leaves after i put a growlight not far from her, and after i moved her away from growlight - the problem disappeared on the next new leaves

    I really love Calatheas and have a few varieties myself, including the Warscewiczii. I have trans potted all of them into Leca. So far so good. Calatheas thrive better in warmer climates like Sydney Australia, where as, where I live is closer to Vancouvers climate. My calatheas, too get crispy edges, which I assume is due to the cold. Sem-hydro seems the way to go. Love your Warscewiczii. So big and lush!!!!! Great video 🥰. Keep us updated!!!!

  • @Monefsjungle
    @Monefsjungle Před 2 měsíci

    I transferred my Calathea Warscewiczii into a self watering planter with soil and it’s been a fantastic combo! I chopped all the tatty growth and it is growing back like mad. I will say, this one pretty much has to have distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. I have a couple of other calatheas that are not as picky but this one always gets those yellow and brownish edges if I use tap water.
    Yours looks beautiful! I’d say it is definitely a success!

    My Calathea has been doing good in my new mix. 2 part airoid mix, 1 part Fafard indoor connaisseur potting mix, than I add extra pumice and pool filter sand. Tons of air and the sand keeps the soil from retaining too much moisture and getting compact. I also add a healthy amount of worm castings and use chicken manure fertilizer. Good luck!

Working like a dream, they seriously came back from the dead. I find it interesting how different it is for everyone

  • @Bat_Fiend.
    @Bat_Fiend. Před 2 měsíci

    I struggled like so many others with my calathea too. But since I started only using rainwater to water it it's been going much better. It's because the chemicals used in our tap water to clean it are too harsh for certain plants like calathea and spiderplants. It ruins the cells in the leaves causing damage similar to this. I'm not saying that's why for sure every time but it could be. It's only what I've heard and what's been working for me. Of course it's still a challenging plant and changing to rainwater isn't going to solve all issues.😂
    Gosh I only have one calathea but since you first showed your warscewiczii I've been wanting one 😅. It's such a gorgeous plant and I'm obsessed with vervet leaves so 💁‍♀️😅.

    Bonjour et merci, pour chacune de vos vidéos ! 😊👍 Chez moi, où l'humidité ambiante est plus que médiocre (certains jours à moins de 20%), le pon m'a permis de sauver la maranta fascinator et l'asparagus. La maranta lemon lime me parait moins sensible à la sècheresse de l'air et reste en substrat adapté. Mais toutes bénéficient aussi chaque jour d'une à deux heures d'humidificateur. Sans quoi, malgré leur volonté de croissance, les feuilles sèchent... 😏 Le pon a du bon, c'est certain, bien qu'à priori, faire pousser des plantes dans de la pierre et de l'eau... 🤨 mais j'ai sauvé deux hawortias grâce à du pon ! My happy, one year old Jungle Velvet Calathea put out 3 stems of beautiful flowers. I moved it 2 feet forward in the tent to have a better view of the flowers and she went into shock and totally crisped up. A plant friend said to chop it off at the base and wait.

    I mainly grow in semi hydro, mostly anthuriums, a few monsteras, philos, and alocasias. They all do just fine. I had a few begonias and the leaves were always crispy. My watering was pretty consistent. I’ve been told by a bunch of people on a fb group that it’s simply because I use tap water. So…..I got rid of all of my begonias because I didn’t want to deal with different types of water to use. So maybe yours doesn’t like tap water either? 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I have grown some of my calathea in water and they thrive! Only way I can get them to survive in soil is if they’re in a greenhouse like environment. They’re such annoying plant, yet so beautiful! So of course I keep torturing myself with their drama and buy more 😂

    You're breathing too hard and talking too loud near the plant, it might not like that and die

    I had a Calathea in one room and noticed the crispy leaves. Moved it to where my other calatheas were and grouped them together then added a mister / humidifier and it reversed the crispy dried leaf😢 areas. I don’t see any crisping now with soil. I’m still interested in pond for some of my thirsty plants. What is in pond??

      I did try but got this explanation. lol... "Ponds are bodies of freshwater where many plants and animals live. B. Fish, turtles, snails, cattails, and algae all live in the water of ponds."

    Isn’t crispy edges also due to low humidity? I know you mention you have about 50% but I think they’ll do better with 80%, have you considered sticking in cabinet? My personal experience with pon, the positive is only temporary as was my case with alocasias ( I water propped for 8 weeks), it started off great but by month 6 in pon, they started to hate it. So back to soil they went.

    Maybe some old soil roots are rotting and bothering the new water roots🤔

    Calathea don't like excess minerals in water from tap water or too much fertilizer, that's probably causing the yellowing on the leaf edges
