@user-kr911 I also just started working at my local greenhouse again. Which keeps me from doing anything with my plants until the weekend. Lack of energy on my part. Not to mention the inevitable risk of bringing home pests.

Hi Fern!!! For watering: I bring a bucket with a grate (I use a cookie drying rack on top of the bucket) around to different plant sections and water my plants over the bucket, so pretty much watering in place but I have to pick up every plant to put it over the bucket so I can still check on them for pests, etc too! I also use the leftover water in the bucket to water my outdoor garden in the summer so it doesn’t go to waste.

Hi Fern! Happy you are back ☺️🌱. Some tips on using the Dr Meter light meter, try not to block light with other objects or yourself while measuring, also, point the center of the sensor to the light source. When you measured the last light reading on your monkey tail cactus (850) and it was out of range and you adjusted settings to 10x the number of foot candles became 8,500 FT, which is fantastic, it is replicating full sun, direct sunlight ☀️. I have the same meter and love it. I’ve learned so much about the effect of light on my plants 🌱
    Thank you for sharing ☺️🙌

Before I only showered my ~100 plants. It took a lot of time and I felt overwhelmed even thinking about watering. As an adhder it's black or white, not any shades of grey, soooo most of the times I let my plants dry waaay too much, because I didn't have energy to shower them. 🤦 It wasn't the showering part. It was the carrying them many times back and forth. When I "allowed" myself to water them in place, it helped me and my plants so much. My plants have grown a lot, not so much dying plants and I feel like I can manage that.
I also have anxiety, so I know how it feels.❤ I've always admired your collection, but thought that it's lot to handle. I've done a lot of downsizing (and upsizing in other plants) and it fits for me and my way of life.

Just heard you ask for tips for watering and it made me think of Becca De La Plants' channel because she uses a bucket with a mesh top to water (water plants on the mesh, drainage goes into bucket) so you dont have to take plants all the way to the sink... but now you may have to empty a heavy bucket, lol

This is basically what I do- wide bucket with a roll up dish drying rack on top and dump the water at the end. For space concerns, you can use a collapsible bucket, and the dish rack rolls up small. So easy.

  • @melissalabatt4567
    @melissalabatt4567 Před 4 měsíci +4

Ok SO I now do the bucket method, and it changed my whole life. I just get my 5 gallon Canadian tire bucket, I fill it halfway (cause I'm weak), throw my fertilizer in, and I go around and water with a red solo cup. No more filling your watering can, and adding your fertilizer every time.
Experience with the pump sprayer- it takes forever, because its a sprayer, and even the ones that have a stream adapter... it's still so slow!
Go get a $10 bucket! Done and done! ❤

time saving hack is using hydro as much as possible honestly :D it means just topping up the water and not having to worry about it for a much longer time, overall reducing watering time. i have most of mine in hydro or semihydro in pon, which works great for anthurium and alocasia, so that is somethign you could consider! love the videos as always, lovely collection :3

i feel like the bucket with the grate thing that Becca DeLa Plants uses would be helpful in terms of full drenching your plants somewhat-in-place. i’m thinking drenching your plant using the bucket thing to catch the water, and while it drip dries you can inspect the next.

Pests are the most overwhelming for me too. I just recently had a huge thrip infestation and it stressed me out SO bad. I ended up finding someone who had systemics from the States that I could buy. It was the only way out for me. Now I only occasionally find a single thrip and for the most part I can just enjoy watering my plants again. I’d like to do more watering in place too but would need more cache pots or large saucers. Currently I use 2 dollarama kitty litter pans - one to water in (and allow to soak from the bottom for a bit), then the other with a cooling rack on top to let them drip. This way I can cycle through watering a pan of plants throughout the day whenever I get a minute (our well water is awful so I use RO water in a big watering can with fertilizer almost every time).

I’m overwhelmed too, we’re moving in a month so I’m not able to keep up with my plant care 😢, BUT! The WINDOWS at the new place!! I see sun stressing in my future and less grow lights! Plus the outdoor space I’m excited to play in the dirt! But will it be soon enough to plant bulbs by the time we get there etc
I water in place 1/2 the time then once a month bring them to the sink/shower. Works well for me. Dunno if it helps or not, but I started putting diatomaceous earth in my soil for repotting, fresh start and all that. It takes me 2.5 days to pest spray all my collection and 2 bathtubs

Hiya Fern, just thinking about watering plants etc......we need to make sure that we dont have too much moisture indoors as I've found black mold under my drip plates, and soil can have mold spores in it.
I've had bad hayfever this season, and it got me thinking about other air conditions.
So, keep aware, if you start to have sinus problems etc.
I still water with a watering can and try to limit stagnant water in their plastic trays.
    Take care, Jo.😊
Im reducing my plants soon....even though it's going to be hard.

This was a very informative video. Flat mites are so tiny and easily missed until the leaves on your plant look mottled. I'm wondering if my Calathea - Leopardina, had them. The leaves started looking discoloured. All I did was hard spray the front and back of every leaf with water, on many occasions. New growth looks so healthy now. Love the light meter reader. Would be interesting to know what each plants light requirement is.

I carry around a dishwash tub to water my plants. I just put a couple of plants in the tub, water them through and then put them back. Then you don’t have to carry around your plants so much but can still have a closeup look

  • @kilec7798
    @kilec7798 Před 4 měsíci +2

That's what I like about those big sprayers. They have an adjustable nozel and you can bring your plants to the tub and really hose them off. The pressure could knock off flat mites. Mine was about 40$ at canadian tire.

You can also add some of your pest products and really get in the crevices where thrips hang out. If you're treating for thrips, they're most often more active at night. Bring them to the bathtub, give them a good rinse, leave them overnight and put them back the next day. Repeat until all your plants are sprayed down.

I also had to find a more efficient way to water my hundreds of house plants and I did! I bought plastic trays that had grids on top so when I water, the water fills the trays and then evaporates to bring humidity to my plants. It is a win win and has made my life and my plants’ lives so much better.

Literally today I was outside prepping the back yard and thinking here we go... lol last summer all I did was water plants indoor and outdoor everyday!!! I was like why do I do this. But I love plants just not the constant attention they need. I installed drip irrigation and life saver. Saves so much time. In BC we get super hot summers so they came on 3 times a day for a Couple minutes when it was really hot. I only have a 165 plants indoors but so far haven't been successful with planting my veggies from seeds. Trying again now. I get it. It's so much work. It's a tricky line between fun and a full time job.

Not surprised about the Barrinas. I've been saying for years that they're wayyy overhyped for how little light the actually put out. I got rid of mine in 2022 and replaced them for standard 6500k garage strip LEDs and my plants have been SO happy that I did lol. I lost so many plants to the Barrinas because the light they put out was just incredibly inadequate.

I totally understand the overwhelm. I have a fraction of your collection but the combo of caring for the indoor stuff while prepping for the outdoor garden is a lot! Something that worked really well for me last year with pests (thrip larvae) was taking a little makeup fan brush and brushing diatomaceous earth on the underside of the leaves. It’s tedious but it completely eradicated them for me.

I think the lux meter is so interesting gadget! I'd understand more of the light intensity levels if you also showed the units in other units than foot candles, because this is the first time I hear of that unit! I always buy lights by their lumen (lm) values and aim for buying over 1000 lm lights that I purpose for growing indoor plants or seedlings for future summer season. I have found awesome cheap lights that are meant for outside lighting that are really bright for indoor gardening... Many of the actual plant lights are expensive if they are high quality, or if they are cheap they will break within a year with daily 12 hour use! If a lamp is meant for outside use I believe it just has to have some extra protection against moisture compared to indoor lights...which I assume is great since bumping up room humidity is moisture.

I used to use the sprayer to water my plants. Took the tip off so it came out a little faster. Works great but need cover pots for every plant. I also leave small amount of water in the bottom of cover pot so I don't have to water twice a week. The sprayer got too heavy for me after c5 c6 cervical surgery so I use a watering can with narrow spout. I mix my fertilizer in large jugs (use pump bottle) couple of pumps and ready to go. I did calculate how much was in a pump. Not exact but saves a LOT of time. Good luck with those darn pesky pests😢

I don't grow in no drainage but everything has cache pots so in the times I'm just not feeling it, I walk around and just give em all a little spray. Hi fern! Sorry to hear about the flat mites. I’m scared to look through a loop tbh. lol. I’ve been seeing so many videos on flat mites. Makes me scared! I wish you well. Been planting like crazy here in FL. Shooting for a nice garden this year. Will be the first time for me. Happy growing! 💚

I keep my gallon pump sprayer on the top of my 3 tier utility cart. And roll it around the room to water.
I also have suspicions of flat mites and did see some thrips. So I hit my whole grow tent with sulfur and let it sit on the leave for several days. Then I spent 2 days taking each plant out and wiped leaves, stems and petioles with my essentria pro insecticide mix. So far so good. 🤞

I take a big low bin, like you might store something in and bring it in one room near all my plants. I always have four or so old milk jugs filled with water/ fertilizer. I sit on my chair, at the coffee table or dinning room table and bring plants in that room to my makeshift watering area. I water each plant, looking it over and all the extra water flows into the big bin. I don’t reuse the water from the bin, I’m afraid of cross contamination. My alocasias do get brought to the kitchen sink for a hose down every week. Once a month I do bring each plant to the kitchen sink for a hose down.

I understand as I would feel the same pressure if my plant collection was that large. I only have ~60 plants and my regular chores take me 2-3 hours a week. Throw in pest treatment, propagations, potting up and everything else in between and I’m feeling concerned about keeping up with my collection too. I think beneficial mites is a great idea. I was thinking the same for me as well but it’s mostly due to the flashbacks of pests from 2023! It was a doozy and I would love if it didn’t have to be repeated!!

I put the heavy duty water catchers under each pot. I water in place. I fill up a bunch of big drugs with whatever needs to be in them. Nutrient wise I water until it goes in to them. The water catchers that is and if it starts to get to fall. I have a catch bucket that I can let it. Overflow into in place there's a lot less walking back-and-forth. All that walking is very exhausting and takes hours when you can do your whole collection even with hundreds of plants and more like 30 minutes.. If you want to do more work than that you can. But all that walking back-and-forth is also quite messy. You always drip stuff, there's always a mess in the kitchen. There's always plants that you leave in there to keep screening in a noise everyone else.. Every time I leave pots in the kitchen I get complaints from family members. When I started watering and place. Nobody ever complains about the plants anymore only says good things. Even if you do it in your bathroom it's still bothers 'people... If you live alone, I also spray all my plants down top to bottom every other month or so with a preventative. I have never had an outbreak since I started doing this.. I used to have the type of flooring luxury vinyl. Where I could just spray in place and let it drip onto the floor and then mop it up after right now. I have carpenti which makes really hard. So I have to put everything out in a towel. And I can only do it every other month. I used to do it every month. Then do it again sometimes in the middle of the month... I only did that when the seasons were changing. Though as pests are a bigger worry than. Doing that I never have had an outbreak in years. I have an actually had any noticeable Pests. I make my own mix with 3/4 water. A couple cap folds or a couple squirts of alcohol. If I'm going to use call bottle. I will put peroxide in it a few pumps of a natural soap. Three or four and fifteen to twenty drops of essential oil that deters bugs. It works amazing it also kicks the butt a fungus it prevents just about everything. Somehow I've gotten along with not Spring very often., Due to the carpet. I can't even imagine how much money it would cost if I didn't make my own spray. Because with a big collection, use a whole bottle if not two every time you spray down.. It costs pennies on the dollars to make your own spray and mice. Race have always been way more effective than the professionals. I did a lot of research to come up with that mix.

Have you thought about planting combo pots? I have lupus so that I don’t have 50 plants separately I plant 5 to 10 plants and one pot…. And that make watering days much much easier. It is a trial and air process because not everything can live together but the majority of the stuff that I plant in does very well. I have over 200 plants and water 2-3 times a week and most of the time it takes about 30-45 minutes. Just depends on the time of year. I have did this for many years. Just a thought ❤❤❤❤

Fern sweetie go to the dollar store spend 3 or 4 dollars and buy a pump sprayer for your end all. It will save you hands and cut down you pest spraying time so much. I recently had a thrip out break on my 5 foot monstera. Spraying it every 4 days wouldn’t have been an option with a spray bottle, but with a pump sprayer , poof 6 treatments later ( yes overkill , but I hate thrips) bugs bye bye !

I downloaded a light meter app and walked around with it today. So, evidently Hoyas should be around 1000 foot candles. Most of my cheap Amazon lights were only putting out about 250 -400 max and that’s if you I put the meter like an inch away from it. So, I was shocked, but then again, not. It’s winter. I have a dark house anyway. I have been getting smaller and slower growth so it makes sense. Ugh, the truth really hurts though! My windowsill was also showing about 800 foot candles and it was raining today! I guess I need to figure out how to maximize my windowsill!

I tend to water in place for the most part. But I'm so afraid my adhd will strike and I'll forget about them or they'll get pests and they'll die so I've made it a point to have a space in each room where feel like the main character and sit in my spare time and groom the ones who need more attention. Keeping up with DUSTING leaves has almost eliminated my pest issues too! 10/10 recommend!

Hi Fern 💫 I too am looking into getting a light meter and may try that one you have. I know my poor plants get no natural light and only rely on grow lights. Thankfully they are thriving and blooming and my anthuriums are giving me berries but curiosity is killing this cat 🐱
Also, what song is that playing around the 14:00 mark of the video? It’s a beautiful song and I would love to know.

  • @honeebee64

Hey Pretty girl! If you want to make watering easier and make at least half of your plants a lot happier, one word...PON. I have all my Alocasias, Marantas, Calatheas and half of my Anthuriums in Pon and they thrive. I also use self watering pots with water level indicators on them, but you have to be careful with those because they stick in the up and down positions. No biggie, I just go around every few days and give them a good tap. Pon is pricy, but you can make your own and it can be boiled and reused, so there's that. 😊
