  • Thank you for watching my playthrough of NieR Replicant. I will make a separate video later to watch the other endings. I left still feeling a bit unsure if I understood everything that was going on with the story in the end, so feel free to shed some light in the comments. I believe I got ending "A".

For Nier Replicant, you can't pull up youtube and watch the other endings to know what's going on.
The next "playthrough" has you restart directly after freeing Kaine from the stone. Every story beat and cutscene from then on will contain extra dialog and expand on the cutscenes revealing more to you, as well as seeing certain events from a totally separate perspective. If you just go to watch the other endings, you'll be missing all of the other crucial information that is told there. It thankfully doesn't take too long, and you can just blast through everything else. But its absolutely 100000000000% worth the extra work.

A "quick" lore explanation without spoiling the events and plot twists of this game or nier automata that you have yet to see, but it can be spoiler of previous games:
An event occurred in tokio, where some beings of another dimension appeared, a red dragon and a giant, they fought until the giant was destroyed, and then the military forces destroyed the dragon, this interdimensional event had consequences, a new disease appear, the white chlorination, that quickly reduce the world population, without knowing how to treat it and facing extinction, the project Gestalt was created and accepted by the entire world, to separate the souls (the Gestalts) from the bodies and preserve those souls indefinitely, and with genetic engineering recreate the bodyes (Replicants) after the white chlorination ends, i asume it means after it takes all human bodies in the world. But the replicants generate free will and feelings on their own so that complicated the posibility to reintroduce the Gestalt, and also a new disease appear in the replicants, the black scrawl, maybe because are soulless beings after all and those bodies can not live without a soul much longer, and thats the beauty and drama of this game, from the Replicants perspective you are alive but are doomed if you not accept your original soul, but that means you stop existing because that soul will live with your body, if you are a Gestalt its unfair that your are waiting thousands of years to be alive again but your body now has free will and doesnt accepts you in, and also cant live without you much longer. How can this be fixed?

Following up on what everyone else has said, yeah the more memorable part of the story begins in route B, and I would say at the bare minimum, you should complete that one. While the gameplay is pretty much the same as what you've seen before, the story takes on a pretty different tone. You also have the opportunity to get a lot more of Kaine and Emil's backstories. It's also probably worth mentioning that while this series is best known for its games, there's also a ton of side content including short stories, stage plays, and even the concerts have extra lore. That's part of the reason why story doesn't feel complete yet, but this game was written to hold up as its own self contained story.
I will say if you do end up playing Automata (and you should, it's amazing) you absolutely need to complete all of the story endings as they are really more of chapter breaks than true endings.

ohhh I would love to see you play through the other endings. The way Yoko Taro games work is that you have to play them several times and each time you're given more context. Hell, there's a vital character that is relevant to the main characters that you haven't met yet. On top of that things like the DPS check in the shipwreck have to be done on more loops. Additionally a lot of the "beat the boss quickly" achievements are not possible on first loop.
The diary also lets you play the recycled vessel DLC as Papa Nier who is also canon. He was the protagonist of the 2010 American release of Nier (often called Nier Gestalt) which is a parallel timeline to Nier Replicant (unsure if its canonically CONFIRMED a parallel timeline but the greater cosmology of the series as a whole deals with a lot of parallel timelines. Most of that lore is in the Drakengard series of games which are connected). In Gestalt "Nier" is Yonah's father instead of her older brother. The plot is exactly the same but all of the character's interactions and Nier's base personality are entirely different.
Nier Replicant has 5 endings A, B, C, D, and E. You can't move past ending B (i think) unless you get all the weapons. There are plenty of spoiler free guides on how to do that. And yes. Ending D (i think) is very scary. Just trust. Additionally, people who played the original Nier have been waiting since 2010 for ending E as it had to be cut from the original release due to time. The shipwreck boss was also cut due to the technical limitations of the PS3.
honestly this is one of my favorite games of all time. You will not regret giving it the time it's asking of you.

If you ever plan on playing NieR Automata, I don't recommend watching/skipping the next endings and specially DO NOT watch ending E before you do so. You'll deprive yourself of some incredible moments.
I'd recommend you give this a rest and actually slog through endings B and C+D (before or after playing NieR Automata, up to you) and then, get the last ending AFTER having played NieR Automata.
None of the next endings require you to play through the whole game again. Third route (which leads to both endings C and D) does become a bit of a slog as it requires getting all weapons but there's always small tidbits of story and dialogue added, some clever twists or reveals related to Kainé's mood swings etc.

Also following up on what was said. Ive also ended up doing the other endings and it was totally worth to play through them. A YT video would just leave you as confused as before. Each path to each ending is filled with extra dialogs, extra content which will in fact flip your understanding of the game upside down.
The way NieR games are made can be understood as not separate endings, but one final true ending and a few checkpoints on the way (that look like game endings but they are not, if you know what I mean), so basically you got to checkpoint A.
    ---
(No spoilers here but general info about what lies ahead of you playthrough-wise, if you decide to actually finish the story)
So you did A. playthrough for ending B will have you start from freeing Kaine from the stone with aditional cutscenes, dialog and others. Playthrough for ending C and D will have you start also from freeing Kaine, and adds even more cutscenes, dialogs and prespectives, but differ at the end of the game (most people just save before the point of no return to do C and then reload to make D), the playthrough for ending E follows up right after ending D (so make sure you make C and then D). I wont spoil anything for E but thats the true ending of the game.
NOTE: For unlocking ending C (and be able to access the next ones) you need to collect all 33 weapons in the game, its the only downside, but the plus is that you can easily buy most of them, leaving only a few to be discovered and one or two as parts of a fetch sidequests (ive used Google to help)
TIP: You also will naturally get stronger, so the monsters will feel like paper toys on subsequent playthroughs. If you dont wanna bother wasting time beating monsters again (to get to other endings), you can flip the game difficulty to easy and it will be quicker.
