  • The California State Guard, Joint Training Command, held their annual Basic Training Course in Camp San Luis Obispo, CA on February 3rd, 2023. This training event introduced new non-prior CSG service members to military culture, ceremonies, and procedures. Those interviewed are SFC (CA) Harman, SPC (CA) Sundar, and PFC (CA) Tu. We would like to thank MAJ (TX) Przybyla from the Texas State Guard who attended the training to observe and discuss best practices for new service-members.

I was AGR for quite a while and knew some state guard folks here and there. We used to call them SMURFS for short. I had no clue that their was some kind of basic for troops at CSLO? That Major is wrong when he says that CA and TX lead the way for all of the national guard- yes- CA and TX units probably have more missions regarding floods, funerals, fires, ect...., but I can tell you from experience and facts that the CA National Guard and all of its elements have had serious issues with leadership, accountability, ect.... Most of the units act in a "reactive" manner especially on drill weekends because the officers or higher ups constantly change the training schedule at the last minute or wait till you show up for drill weekend and change it. What does this do- it confuses the troops. Units should be "pro-active" instead to avoid this stuff. Between that and all of the mandatory suicide prevention, sexual harassment, gender sensitivity training, Sergeants dont have anytime to conduct SGT's Training and MOS specific training on a drill weekend because your in mandatory classes all day. Im glad I retired when I did because people I still know in the CA guard/state reserves tell me it is way worse now and only getting worse. I would NOT recommend anyone joining the CA guard or anything for that matter. I do have to say; Id rather train at CSLO than Camp Roberts on any day- Just my 2 cents- Carry On-

The SMURFS are a little bit hilarious. I was in the Guard and had a few SMURFS show up to my unit. They looked a bit odd for sure but did help us with our training exercise. I think for them being volunteers that the Guard does need it. A few of my soldiers were griping about saluting them or how the other SMURFS received their rank when my soldiers had actually gone to BCT/AIT etc. I just reminded them that they were volunteers. In the end another anomale of the guard/ might as well just call them the militia.

It depends on your state (if your state has one). Nobody gets paid for drill or training. Some states will pay you a standard guardsmen wage if your governor activates your unit. Pay (if applicable to your state) is based on your rank and will be comparable to what a national guardsmen of the same rank would be getting paid.

no, state defense forces are state government organizations and sister components to that states national guard and air national guard. But unlike the other 2 they cannot be called up to federal service and only work under the governors command. their job is mostly disaster relief and assisting the NG if needed.

the state guard is essentially a local anti invasion force. even when nat'l guard is called up to fight, it wont cause the locale to not have military protection. with how naturally protected the US homeland is, these forces have atrophied as a result.
