I did the battery replacement today using a 50Ah SMF battery. I did not use any alternative power source. All I did was removing the one bolt holding the battery, and the two main poles, switched during a few minutes and all was good.
Don`t repeat my mistakes, first, remember to remove the bottom bracket before the power-connectors so the power is away for just a couple of minutes. (I was out for maybe 10 minutes and it was fine, but shorter is better)
Secondly, I accidentally quick-shorted the terminal + with my wrench, so make sure to keep that red connector plate away from any metal car part. After installing the new battery, the car system was fine and all systems worked like a charm!
It might be a good idea to temp wrap the red terminal in a bag or have a helping person holding it while swapping the battery.
Programming: I have read different opinions about it but I don`t really belive reprogramming is crucial. Batteries degrade over the years and even if your battery has slightly different specs compared to the old one, the old one was degraded and had much worse performance anyway. The new battery can only perform better and there is a built in health measurement that should adapt to the new battery. It did say the old battery needed to repair, so I assume it will detect that the new battery is healthy. Maybe the programming is supposed to tell how quick the battery can be charged and what the capacity is, again, those are numbers that will float over the years.

Thanks for the video, it was very useful, I managed to keep the system with an adjustable source while I removed the battery to fill the levels. For that, 2mm holes are drilled on each of the 6 glasses and then distilled water is added with a syringe. Distilled water evaporates with use and for that reason it is necessary to complete the levels, as it was done before. In the end the holes are sealed with silicone, and there you have a battery that will last you another cycle.
Nice video, you can also use the OBD port of the car to supply 12v. Saves a lot of messing around with alligator clips!

I exchanged my battery just by removing and replacing with a new one.I did no 'keeping the ECU alive' stuff just a quick swop. I presumed with most
car manufacturers they put in a high capacity capacitor in the ECU to keep all of the setting 'alive' for a few hours.
The radio stations were all saved and the electric windows worked (?) not sure how electric windows would need resetting after a battery swop?
I could imagine that the windows forget their current position if you loose power for too long. Could be closed, open or half open.
Very helpful, but I would have appreciated a little more explanation (& take a bit longer!) during the process when you remove the negative terminal & the associated wire to be removed (before removing the black positive terminal block sitting on top of the battery) & why (presumably because it allows the block to be moved out of the way to extract the old battery?). Also, how you remove the black plastic top cover on the terminal block off its base to expose the terminals (are there clips to be eased off & how is it done?)? Just pause a bit between the stages, please!!

You have great videos, but a new start/stop battery needs to be coded for the BEM to charge it effectively, otherwise you may shorten it’s life by under or overcharging it.
True ! This can be done to any workshop with a pro scan tool after replacement . I am not sure if this car support this ..🤔

i've recently purchased an used VW Up! it has that option but so far it never activated for me
when u put blinker on to left or right put gearbox into neutral and release the clutch engine will turn off when pressing clutch again it will start the car again and put clutch 1st gear to drive away again Goodluck.
Could you describe how to put these batteries on charge? VW state that they must be taken to your dealer to charge!

Hi, how did you solve this? According to the manual, the car should recode itself after a few kms of slow drive (15-20 km/h). Please respond soon, I will need to change my 12V battery now:)

Whats the worst thing that can happen if you dont keep the computer alive, and just remove the old batter and replace it?
You can lose your car settings like the radio security code and trigger all sorts of fault codes.

@@be_ai_art Reset the DTC's(car fault codes) with an generic OBD2 scanner. For the radio code you can look into the cars instruction manual. If there is none there is no other option to go to the VW dealer.

Do you need 2 batteries (old and new) or 3 (old, bypass, new) ?
At your video i have the impression there are 3 batteries, the bypass is in a bag or something at 2:17.

That was a more lighter li ion 12 v battery that's why I used it .But the new lead acid battery can be used as well , is just a matter of how long the jumper cables are and were you keep the new heavy lead acid battery . All you need is 2 wires to somehow apply 12 v to the main terminals while you remove the old battery . Is not absolutely necessary to do this process , in that situation you might lose some settings on your dashboard or other stuff .

The idea is not to loose the setting and memory informations !
@@doit_vehicles thanks for the video, seeing it seems easy enough to replace the battery.what i wanted to know is if as you wrote you can actually avoid bypassing without having to use another battery and directly remove the exhausted one and then insert the new one.another question, after how long did you have to change the battery? did you use the start and stop often? I have a CNG up from 2014 and now the battery has a tantrum, if I don't use the car frequently this does not hold the charge.
@@pippolino182 a battery life will be in average betwen 2 - 4 years . Keeping the battery low / uncharged for a long time will decrease its life the most .
Too confusing. Just change the battery.
