You have to play aggressive against Rafa. He isn't as crazy fast as he was years ago but his shots are dangerous as ever. And that's exactly what Frances did. Anyone who beats Rafa deserves a ton of respect. Well played.
His forehand is probably better than it used to be. His backhand definitely is. And his speed is still probably in the top 5
Truthfully, Rafa isn't the biggest guy relative to the men with monster serves who tend to do well on hard courts, so it's remarkable that for someone who has been so reliant on spin that he's been able to go deep in the U.S. Open so many times before. Tiafoe can easily hit through Nadal on this surface, as can a lot of other players, but a lot of people probably doubted whether he'd be smart enough to be consistent and not implode at some point.
Yeah well this guy is 24 years old, and Rafa is what, 36? Give me a break lol. A fit 24 year old is always going to have an absolutely massive advantage over a fit 36 year old. There's no kind way of putting that.
@@WikiPeoples 🤣🤣🤣
Spot on. That’s how Alcaraz did it at Madrid. All out aggression and crazy speed around the court. Tiafoe totally rocked it tonight. Totally deserved.
Tiafoe's aces, winners, volleys, everything fired today.
Don't think anyone saw this coming. But Tiafoe now willing to participate in the Next Gen takeover.

Tiafoe has always played a lot, but in tennis, as in any sport, what rules in decisive moments is the head. And today he was 100% focused. Congratulations!
Usually its the Big 3 who always wins such crunch moments but today tiafoe swept it totally !
Agreed
The last set was very telling. Tiafoe was down a break but didn't panic then broke back and later broke again to take the set and match. Breaking Rafa twice in one set then he seals the deal is a testament to his mental fortitude.
Ok
This time crowd is against Nadal I think which made him lose actually or due to age he lost or he was tired and exhausted after the season he played 3 majors winning 2 major titles and reached semifinals at Wimbledon so he is fully exhausted in 4th round actually
What a solid win by Tiafoe. He had chances to choke, but he wasn’t having any of that now. He needed to play smart and risky Tennis. He went beyond that.
Thank you Tiafoe for eliminating "pro-pfizer" Nadal 🎉🥳

If a Tiafoe vs Kyrgios is a possibility, I want it because they are two very interesting players to follow. Can I just say, the level of tennis at this year’s US Open has been astounding!
Would have been great, but unfortunately, Kyrgios has not developed the emotional and mental fortitude to get to the very top. I'm always rooting for him, but somehow, he manages to beat himself and lose decisive points and matches.
where is the guy who comments “there’s no way Rafa won’t win US open I dare challenging anyone” on every tennis video now? 😂
He is a really nice and humble person. It is not easy to find people like him in the US. He is a gentleman inside and outside the court. He totally owned Nadal.
I'm guessing you've never been to the US. There are plenty nice and humble people here as in any other country.
@@andrewkoines6389 Very less amount compared to other countries.
nadal is 36 are you really happy beating Nadal out of his prime athletically by 10 years? if so then to each his own...
@@donutking4uwhy can't they beat djokovic then?
The last set was very telling of Tiafoe mental fortitude. He was down a break when Rafa was up but didn't panic and broke back to level the set then broke Rafa to take the lead. Tiafoe return game is remarkable and his serves held steady. His cross court backhand was solid on defence and his forehand seals the deal. IMO the best match of the tournament and is the final. Give the guy the Grand Slam already will ya.
Tiafoe is an excellent baseliner, but right now his serve is very poor. Had Rafa served better Tiafoe would have been in much bigger problems. Kudos nonetheless, he did what he had and slaid the beast unlike that Fritz clown.
Guys like Kyrgios or Berrettini with their monster serve plus solid baseline will make him suffer. Even guys without monster serves will create big problems for him: Alcaraz can outgun him and outlast him and has a better head overall, and Sinner's game when on point has no fissure.
Tiafoe has done some heavy duty work, even the other guys would have had trouble with a "serveless" Nadal, but that doesn't mean he can win easily the USO, he will have very troublesome matchups in semis and finals.
Rafa never expected the crowds to be against him that much 🤣🤣🤣...but that is Djokovic life over the last 2 decades 🤣🤣🤣
Congrats Tiafoe well deserved win 👏👏👏
Rafa didn't worried about the crowd support ..but Djokovic and his fans like u are worrying..Why u want to mention Djokovic in this match unnecessarily?
Very well describes, Nadal & Federer always playing with the crowd wind behind.
Great day to take off the disguise.
Rafael was nevera gentle when losing, this day for example. Terrible.
Roger, Rafa, Novak Imagine young players who dream playing these guys on a big stage, let alone winning. Congrats!
And if the U.S. was sane and sensible regarding "vaccines", then they'd have a chance in this tournament to play against Novak.

A win against the big 3 ( well now it's big 2 ) , is a big achievement for any player , especially in a grandslam match.
Congratulations to Tiafoe 👌
Yawn...just hand over the trophy to Carlos Alcaraz. Where's Novak Djokovic when you need him the most!
you think Djokovic winning yet again is a remedy for a yawn...interesting
Just unbelievable! So deserving after years of hard work. I remember following Tiafo's journey after a story about how he came to play tennis at the tennis club where his father worked doing maintenance. Watching your parents in your team's box living this moment is incredible. You are an inspiration to many that hard work pays off. Hats off to Nadal, who graciously acknowledged what this moment means for Tiafo with that embrace at the end. While it is sad to see Nadal losing when he was the favorite by many, he has given the tennis world his fantastic career, and hopefully, he can win another slam. As for the match, Tiafo's serve and variety of shots broke Nadal's rhythm. Watching that match, one could say Tiafo also took one or two tips from Dustin Brown playing at Wimbledon against Nadal in 2015.
There's no way you can avoid an embrace by Tiafoe :) He came across the net to hug Rafa. If you look closely, Rafa couldn't wait to get out of there.
Hard work can pay off, but not for everyone. We shouldn't tell the younger generations that there are guarantees if..."working hard" and "pursuing dreams". Yes, work hard, pursue a dream, and have back-up plans in case the previous (2) directives don't actually work out. Which might actually be true for the vast majority of the world. Not all have the physical blessings and luck and genetics to last long in sports or other high-stress body-oriented jobs, though they would love to be a part of it on a professional-making-a-living level.
Rafa could have been more sportsmanlike in defeat, although he wasn't un-sportsmanlike. Gracious losers are beautiful examples of Sport. Zhang was such an example with Gauff.
@@machtnichtsseimann we've just had 2 years of Big Brother telling yutes and illegal aliens that they don't have to work. How's that working out for you with this global economic crash coupled with tyranny?
@@AndrzejzBuffalo Yep, Tiafoe was annoyed by Rafa's antics, but he will never forget one of his idols nonetheless.
@@machtnichtsseimann It's true, but like Calvin Collidge said:
"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent".
Hard work does pay off more often than not: Wawrinka and Cilic are testament to that. On the other hand, guys with tons of talent like Kyrgios, Fognini, Monfils, Nishikori, Dimitrov have been underachieving for years now due to lack of persistence. The reason hard work seems to "not pay off" in tennis right now is that you have the brilliance of tennis savants like the B3 MIXED with hard work.
Hard work beats talent alone, but it won't beat TALENT + HARD WORK.

Congrats to Tiafoe! I wanted him to experience an awesome win and he accomplished it today in front of his home crowd!
Stunning from Tiafoe. Rafa may not be fit lately but this was still quite brilliant from him. He's having an insane run so far. He was close to a famous scalp all those years ago against Federer in 2017 in the first round at this very place. Then had a tight one against Djokovic in AO last year. But finally gets one over one of the big three guys, here in Rafa. Incredible stuff. He's come a long way and it's been overdue since he had Federer close at this very place 5 years ago. Now only one more former champ, Cilic, is remaining and if he bowes out too, we'll yet again guarantee another new US Open champion for the 3rd year running.
Rafa is built like a ninja turtle. You're tripping bruh

@@broncoguy4862 That doesn't prove me wrong. Carlos' wins that you mentioned have all been in 3 set matches, and all in one streak. The Nadal and Novak wins were when they were both coming back and not at their best. He's failed to produce in slams, so far. Kyrgios made the Wimbledon final, which none of the others have done. He also just beat Medvedev. And Berettini, who also has an incredible record including a Wimbledon final, Semi, and Quarters, has a much better chance. But hold on to your Carlos dream, for another 48 hours anyway .. ;-)

Congrats to my man, Tiafoe ! 😊🙇♂️ His game was just off the charts. He hit some amazing forehand and volley winners. He was returning like Novak. 😂 Lol.
Tiafoe reminded me of Roger at the 2017 Australian Open final. After being 3 - 1 down in the 4th set, he started to attack and defend like crazy. Rafa was playing well. Frances was just in a level of his own. He can be very proud of what he achieved. He made the "tennis' greatest fighter" powerless. Trailing from 3-1 to win it 3-6 : not many can claim to have done that against Rafa.
The match was decided on break points. And big for delivered.Amazing play, great match

That Tiafoe backhand was the main factor in neutralizing Nadal's game. Players with extraordinary backhands(not including single handers as Nadal invariably breaks down the righty-single- handed-backhand) like Djokovic, Coric, Davydenko do well against Nadal. It seems Tiafoe will get on that list.
Yes. All these players and Tiafoe and Zverev too have much stronger backhand than Nadal especially down the line. It helps them to beat Nadal.

As a casual fan, Its my first time even hearing about this Tiafoe fellow, is he a young emerging talent on the men's circuit? As much as I love Nadal and Djokovic, Tennis need new stars. Judging by these short highlights, this must have been a great match..
He's been on the scene for a minute, but like Kyrgios, he's finding his form. He recently achieved his highest ATP rank ever, 22 in Aug.
He's 24, played pretty much every major for the last 6 years since he was 18, but it's only his 2nd quarter final and the 5th time he's got to the last 16 (3 of those 5 where in the last 5 majors though).
Great to watch; always wins the crowd over. Struggled to win games against big names though and tended to go out (respectably) to the first real top level opponent he came up against, and people were starting to worry he might be a 20-40 in the world range player who never made the step up. So beating Nadal is huge.
He has been featured in ATP's youtube videos, quizes and such… so he's face may be more known to some through that, too ;
@amazingfabs no not really! He took federer to 5 sets back in the 2017 US Open
Very few people would have predicted Tiafoe winning today, including me. But he played awesome!!
Congrats Frances!
Oh and btw, now the US will officially crown a new grand slam champion and possibly also a new world no.1 😲
Cilic is still in the draw.
I would not be surprised at all. Nadal's game was never top notched on any surfaced except clay. He would have to be in his prime or playing exceptionally well, or the opponent has to wobble mentally. If none of these happen, he wouldn't make it. None of those things happened in this match.
@@Nycku007 oh yea, but I expect him to loose to Alcaraz :)
If we're speaking strictly from a physical standpoint, Tiafoe is the prototype for a hard-court player. He has excellent power, great mobility for his size, and a potent serve. Nadal has greater resolve and a higher tennis IQ, but he's not an ideal hard-court player, which only makes his four U.S. Open titles even more incredible. Power and athleticism will always win out all other things being equal.
I predicted it but 5 sets because Nadal hasn't looked great this tournament, no injury concern but age has caught up to him so he needs to start limiting where he plays also Tiafoes has been on insane form recently on hard courts.
Música para mis ojos y oídos !!! muy bien FT

Btw we need extended highlights asap!
I always wondered why Tiafoe was not a top ten player. He has magical groundstrokes and service. But he is not allround enough to be a top ten player. But now and then he is creating miracles. Go on Francis. Keep on going!

I wanted to cry watching him cry! To imagine the hard work and countless hours of blood, sweat and tears. Congratulations to a fellow Sierra Leonian 🇸🇱
I'm so happy Nadal's cheating didn't help him this time. Tiafoe stayed focused💪🏻
While Tiafoe played exceptionally well, the reality is Nadal has not been the same player since he got injured at Wimbledon - he has played only one tournament since then - let us hope the Big 3 plus Zverev all come back soon hale and healthy

To me the key thing that helped Tiafoe win sets 3 & 4 was he hit more of his backhand down the line to Nadal’s backhand when he wasn’t sure if a cross court backhand would win the point because often times Nadal got to that corner and whipped his powerful forehand for a winner.
Look carefully at the match stats for this match:
Frances Tiafoe vs. Rafael Nadal
18 Aces 9
4 Double faults 9
50% First serve % 51%
76% Win % on 1st serve 74%
65% Win % on 2nd serve 67% Nadal was simply outplayed. Francis always had it in him.
Look at the aces and double faults of Nadal!
well, Sinner won with 27 double faults =))
Nadal had enough luck at the AO and French. His level has been quite average the whole year. He was saved by chokes.
Yes he was indeed fortunate in 2022
Yes like he got lucky in AO QF where shapo choked and the final worst of all. And RG QF Nole choking 4th set and Zverev the 1st set of semifinal
He really took it to Rafa - hit the ball early, aggressive and deep. Could've choked like Shapo and Med at the Australian Open but he didn't. Love the guy!
Taking the Nadal ball on the rise before his wicked spin takes over is key. Francis played a gutsy match, executed, and more importantly he had that belief. Way to go!!!!!
Cool to think that if Cilic loses tonight, someones getting their 1st grand slam ever at the end of the week...
He lost to Alcaraz. New USO champion confirmed.
Frances I hope you go all the way to the title!
This match gave me Kyrgios vs Nadal SW’14 vibes. Such pure hitting by Tiafoe.
Wow, those are some epic sets (out takes). Wow...
Well done from Tiafoe you gotta bring it to beat Rafa and play aggressive and consistent at the same time! What a great match and battle!
I'm surprised Rafa didn't complain to the chair umpire against the crowd when they were cheering for Tiafoe.
Tiafoes returns were deadly! What a match.
Frances is very strong physically and mentally. Emotionally stable, and most important he has the highest tennis IQ. Frances will be the new US Open 2022 Champion. Period.
