    What is Cataract?
Cataracts are an extremely prevalent eye condition, especially in the elderly. It occurs when the crystalline lens, the natural lens of the eye, becomes opaque, making it difficult for light to pass through and consequently impairing vision. Cataracts can occur naturally as we get older, but they can also appear in younger people due to various factors such as:
    - **Congenital Cataract**: Babies can be born with cataracts.
    - Ocular trauma: Injuries to the eye can cause cataracts.
    - Uveitis: Inflammation inside the eye.
    - Genetic Factors: Genetic predisposition to develop cataracts earlier.
    - Diabetes: A condition that can accelerate the onset of cataracts.
    Symptoms of Cataracts
Cataract symptoms vary according to the severity and progression of the condition. The main symptoms include
    - Blurred vision
    - Difficulty seeing at night
    - Sensitivity to light and reflections
    - Need for stronger light to read or perform other activities
    - Double vision in one eye
    - Frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescription
    Can Cataracts Lead to Blindness?
The question many patients ask is whether cataracts can lead to blindness. The answer is yes. If left untreated, cataracts can progress to the point of causing significant vision loss. In extreme cases, it can lead to functional blindness, where the person can see almost nothing apart from glare and shadows.
However, it is important to note that this blindness caused by cataracts is reversible. With modern surgical techniques, vision can be restored in the vast majority of cases. Cataract surgery involves removing the opaque lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. This procedure is generally safe and effective, resulting in a significant improvement in the patient's quality of life.
    When is surgery necessary?
The decision to perform cataract surgery depends on several factors, including the degree of visual loss and the impact of this loss on the patient's quality of life. Surgery is recommended when the cataract interferes with daily activities, such as reading, driving or watching television.
It is essential that surgery is not postponed in cases of advanced cataracts, as the denser the cataract, the more complex the surgery can be. Even so, surgery in advanced cases can reverse the loss of vision, as long as the eye, apart from the cataract, is healthy.
    Prevention and Care
Although it is not possible to prevent cataracts completely, some measures can help slow down their development:
    - Maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants.
    - Control chronic diseases such as diabetes.
    - Protect your eyes from UV rays by wearing sunglasses.
    - Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
    - Have regular eye examinations, especially after the age of 60.
    Conclusion
Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness in the world. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, it is possible to restore vision and significantly improve quality of life.
