- In this video, Magnum photographer Ian berry shares with us his experiences and perspectives gathered from his life's work.
Being invited to join Magnum in 1962, Ian has seen various parts of the world and worked in most (if not all) aspects of professional photography. He has worked for the Daily Mail in South Africa, where his career first took off, and his work has even been found as crucial evidence in finding innocence during a trial linked to the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. Ian has a wealth of ideas about what makes somebody a great photographer and, here, he divulges what he thinks that is.

A very enjoyable interview.......what a fullfilling and wonderful life.....doing what you love to do whilst travelling the globe......capturing such moments in time.....from the famous to the ordinary normal person like myself. Ive alot more photos to look through.....and fully appreciate how your photos take you right there. And capture every essence of the subject taken. Am looking forward to the latest book. Many Thanks . Juliette from the Hairdressers x
Thank you - we can't wait to see the new book either.
Nice story about one good photo per year. Gosh, made me feel very professional! In truth, this man has done a great job for many decades. Glad to hear him speak.
A wise man and a great photographer.
Handsome Guy. Very calm and kind. Must be a dream come true to make a living from photography.
Ian Berry is a legend.
wonderful interview! the small stories of your shoots vey illuminating. Good questions and excellent answers.
Oh mate, i got a Double distinction for an essay i did on Mr Berry.(1990's) Everyone were blowing smoke up HCB's backside, Avendon etc, i was busy researching Mr Berry. Cheers IB!
This was such a enjoyable interview!
Thank you for doing this!
A brave man and an outstanding photographer!
Micha Ba-am is a member of Magnum since the late ‘60s
Hearing these incredible stories, I wonder who someone of this generation, the age of this interviewer, and the age Ian was at the beginning of his career, would cope with what he saw without being offended, live as he lived with so little, and survived as he survived without PTSD, to tell the story of others rather than be motivated by instagram likes?
He's an incredible person
Thank you.
Wealth of wisdom!
He had a cheek to call another photographer mad. Many a times he has been shot at. Think I'd give it up after that. Brave man great photographer. Wish you had showed the images that he was talking about. Still great interview.
Thank you for watching, we agree 👍
The epitome of an underestimation from a Brit. Ian is an absolute legend.
Great story
Thanks for listening
