  • In this video I show my mini sketching kit that I take everywhere I go, so that I can sketch when I have a few minutes.
    In this kit I just have very basic tools - pencil, sketchbook, and a bit of ink and color. I hold my sketchbook in my hands, or rest it in my lap.

      They usually do. Sometimes they come over, look at your sketch, and then quickly retreat because the weird stuff you sketch matches the outfit! ;-)

    I especially like the pencil with sharpener built in. As far as looking cool with a fanny pack on.....at 67 I have given up looking cool and only want to paint! My usual outdoor painting kit is haphazard and I tend to grab pencils and art journal and put them in my backpack. It is usually a mess. I am going to make a smaller kit and it will be much more convenient. Danke

    • @NatureSketchbook

      Quite right! I usually don't care how silly I might look, and the painting aspect is more important. I definitely know the backpack setup with stuff thrown in. Glad to hear you found this helpful. :-)

    Awesome travel bag..I'm also at the age that I dont care what others think of me..so I quite enjoyed your humor of what you wear to keep others from coming up to you...I find it funny as when your drawing outside so many people like to watch you...personal myself I think it's a innate love of seeing art being created by a artist that others enjoy watching...many art blessing to you today...🎨✍

      It's probably not that common to see someone create art in a public space, and people love to chat about these things. So far I've mostly had nice interactions with curious people - despite my weird appearance ;-)

    Omg-osh I love it all, and esp your funny comment on looking weird with your fanny-pac to keep people at bay. 🤣
    I have taken more and bigger amounts out including easel and don't particularly care for all that extra baggage, so looking forward to creating your mini kit.

      At least this works most of the time. ;-) I'm not an anti-social sketcher, but it can be nerve-wracking to talk about art with strangers, while you're making it.
      This small kit is a work in progress, so if you find something that works better for you, absolutely make changes to it!

    • @roksannastephens4375
      @roksannastephens4375 Před 3 lety +1

      @@NatureSketchbook Thank you again, I love your kit, going to create one. I too am not an anti- social artist but I do hate when people approach me doing art, and even worse telling me how to improve it. I've asked, oh are you an artist and they always say no, but then proceed to cirque my art. I had a art professor once tell us to wear head phones and listen to music so people will avoid you too. 🤣. Over the years I've shyed away from it because people are so rude and invasive; but I truly love bring out doors and creating from nature so going to give it another try. Thanks again for your inspiration and tips.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook  Před 3 lety +1

      Ooh, bringing headphones is a great tip, too! Some people are just overstepping their boundaries without even noticing it (telling you how to improve it?!?), unfortunately you never know how people are beforehand. I've found that most people will just ignore me anyway.
      Maybe now is the best time to start making art outside again: people will (hopefully) keep more distance because of the virus. All the best!! ✨

    A small folding stool is also good to have. There are some simple lightweight folding ones that are easy to carry. I find I am more likely to paint if I can sit otherwise its a photo and paint it back in the motel.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook  Před rokem

      Yes, a folding stool is great to have! In the summer I often leave mine at home and just look for a comfortable bench or a meadow, but my knees and other joints definitely benefit from it when I bring that small stool.

    Thank you for some real encouragement. I have often wanted to sketch and paint outdoors but the idea of people coming close to look over my shoulder fills me with horror. I think this is a good way to start if I can find some suitable quiet places. I really enjoyed your video.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook  Před 3 lety +1

      I know, it can be a bit uncomfortable. I always try to choose a place with something behind me, so that people don't sneak up from behind. Some people wear headphones (sometimes with no music on) to prevent conversations. Maybe a mask will do the same these days. And I've found most people really just ignore you.

    Just started watching the video - I must say, I am loving the landscapes I can sneek-peek into that little compact sketchbook!
    I only saw a couple and they looked experienced, if that makes sense. The brushstrokes and the shapes I could see in the paintings looked like you did them comfortably because you probably have been landscape painting so many times. That's the impression they gave to me. Also the colours were very pleasing to see. It is delightful when one can see this tipe of work. I like it and it's inspiring. Thank you

    Great kit with good tips. My set up is a bit bigger and holds a 5x7 sketchbook loosely and has the same pocket set up. It is an over the shoulder bag meant for fishing, but carrying less would be great. Somewhere I have an empty screw top lidded tin. I'll have to check to see if it is waterproof.

    Love your kit. The pencil sharpener/extender was new to me. Love it.
    I have several plein air kits and have a mini watercolor palette the size of a business card holder.
    I live in US Florida and have to with heat. I have what I call my "walk about kit". My water bottle (for drinking) goes in a cross body holder. I use a spiral sketchbook attached to a shoulder leash. I usually have a pen in the sketchbook (or in my pocket). My shorts have a lot ot pockets. Besides wallet, money holder with spare key, and key in my pockets; I have a kleenex holder that has kleenex on one side and a cut up handkerchief on the other. That is in a back pocket along with a waterbrush. I have a plastic pouch, attached to a belt I put on, that holds either and assortment of inexpensive fountain pens filled with water-soluble ink OR my mini watercolor palette. If I take a mechanical pencil instead of my pen in the sketchbook, I'll also bring a waterbrush with a dilute watercolor solution. I use that over the pencil lines to avoid smudging. The other thing that goes in one of my pockets is a plastic bag to cover the sketchbook in case of rain. Always have a hat on. Sometimes it's a broad brim hat that is built to be more cooling. Have several neck pieces that are meant to cool when wet. I also have a very lightweight folding stool that I bring sometimes.
    I do have a small backpack setup for plein air. In a front pouch, I have a folding plastic cutting board that works well.
    Thank you for an enjoyable video.

    I admit I frequently take way too much when I go out, and I have been looking at suggestions to pare it down. Just curious on who makes/sells that pencil sharpener-cap? That would be so handy.
    I don't concern myself with being cool either. My travel kit is late 1950s/early 1960s Belgian Army bike messenger bag, or a pair of French military pannier bags on my bicycle rack.

    Why do you use a bright pink colored pencil? Isn't it too strong a color in the sketch?

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook  Před 3 lety +1

      I just use what I have on hand. The pink mostly disappears when you paint over it, and the contrast can be interesting. I also use a normal pencil if I want different linework. :-)

    • @hannahskoonberg
      @hannahskoonberg Před 3 lety +2

      @@NatureSketchbook Ah cool. I happened to see another watercolor painter bring a pink pencil and I wasn't sure if it was a "thing" she said that it didn't smear or contaminate the color like graphite can. I think colored line work is light and playful but everyone is obsessed with black ink.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook  Před 3 lety +2

      Ah, I see. I have to admit I never know if anything is a "thing" because I live under a rock. 😉But yes, no smearing is another advantage. If you use watercolor pencils, your linework disappears completely. It's really a decision of how you want the lines to look!
