my grandma's fountain pen | sketching with a vintage Montblanc

Today I'd like to show you a small pen set that once belonged to my grandmother. For me it's very special because of the stories and memories connected to it, even if I don't use the pens a lot. The fountain pen is a Montblanc 22 - it has a piston mechanism with a blue ink window lined with gold that can be refilled directly from an ink well. The 14 K gold tip is nice and has a fine to medium l...

keep it simple | tips for a stress free sketchbook practice

One thing I've noticed about my own sketching activities, but also in comments that you readers and viewers send in, is that whenever I make sketching too complicated, I'm less motivated to do it. I think we are less likely to keep sketching when we start to see it as a kind of obligation, or a duty, thinking we need to draw something every single day without fail or were not doing it right. Ge...

In this video I give you a simple guide on how you can learn to draw anything. You don’t need any special skills or talent for drawing and sketching when you start, it just takes a bit of practice and the desire to learn. My approach to learning how to draw is that even if you have no idea how to do this, you can get really decent after a while if you learn the basic concepts techniques and if ...

So cleanly explained.. so peaceful. So beautiful!
Thank you for addressing this important topic. I am a watercolor teacher, and I walk my beginning students through a series of basic techniques (always emphasizing that there are multiple ways to do anything) and encouraging intermediate students to apply these techniques to their painting practice. My main job is to ensure students that their work is good, that they aren't doomed, and to calm their desire to invent draconian rules around art. I often talk about the importance of experimentation and play, and I have had several retired students who have forgotten how to do this due to a lifetime of responsibility. Students become very anxious if they think their picture is ugly. (I regularly joke that there's no art police and their work is better than they think.) I encourage them to practice these techniques repeatedly, but many get bored or impatient and want a magic trick to suddenly create fully developed pictures without spending time practicing. Learning something new is a big challenge, but it's worth the effort.
Julia … I’m not familiar with Schmincke Chestnut Brown and can’t find it on the product listing. Is it an older color? If so, do you mind sharing the pigment(s). Great video!

A cry from the wilderness This comment is four years later ,4 years ….and it’s so much worse ..everything here ,all these negatives are just amplified by a hundred fold Meta is by far the largest thief ..I bet they don’t teach their algorithms about the ethics ..which is tragic for society ..but only one aspect ..a shame we can’t save ourselves from soulless greed ..but I still communicate via insta …f them !I was with insta before meta and it didn’t have to be this way
Thank you by the way lol…
Brilliant! I was struggling with flat clouds and no depth. Now ill have a trick to fix that❤
You drew me in with your tree drawing classes. The tips were great because you offer a simple clear path to build my skills. I picked up my pencil to draw as you spoke and I think that helped. Now, back to my Summer sketching class with you on Gumroad!
Clear simple inspirational exclamation point
Good morning. I use several types of fountain pens: Sailor Fude bent nib angle 55 degree, Sailor Fude bent nib angle 40 degree and then my newest, Number72 Wancai Mini Transparent Pocket-Size Eyedropper Fountain Pen Fine Nib 0.5mm. This little pen fits in my altoid tin with gouache mini pans
Great knowledge and wisdom. I appreciated this video. Thank you.
Thank you very much…
Very inspiring and beautiful ❤
Thank you
social media becomes just another addiction thats difficult to be free of.
those petals look so really nice, lovely colours🥰
Thank you! <3
Great demonstration! Thank you! I even slowed it to half speed so I could watch your drawing better! Is this on hot press paper and do you have a favorite for this kind of sketching? Thanks again!
I always debate internally if I should show the video in natural speed, but it would be so long that I think no-one would watch it. ;-) Yes, it's HP paper, I like to use Saunders Waterford extra white.
Lovely irises😊 I like to use py150, a yellow pigment that can be used to produce a whole range of values.
Yes that's a very versatile pigment with a wonderful glow.
Hi Julia! I'm a new subscriber. Liking your tutorials It is very conversational, journalistic and detailed, to the point I can see your blue veins in your hands pop. The way you break down visuals into fundamental shapes to capture verisimilitude.
Thank you Joel. I filmed this in 4K, I guess that helps with the details!
Beautiful!
Thank you! :)
Appreciate all the tips!…you really explained well how to sketch and paint these beautiful irises. Thanks for the video 😊
You're welcome!
Love your tip of layering with the same color to create intensity & shadows, rather than using blue or purple. Thanks for sharing!
Yes I think it's particularly nice for those light delicate flowers.
Excellent demonstration! Thank you Julia 🤗 That looks a useful brush also
It's a Raphael Softaqua brush.
I’m a beginner drawer, I’m stumped & very sceptical about drawing become I don’t seem good at it. Not problems. Never give up🎉🌞🎨
Just continue practicing, you'll get there eventually!
Thank you Julia this was a really good video. Very good advice!
What a great story and beautiful pen! Thanks for sharing 😊
What a wonderful spread, such an encouragement for me to just keep sketching!
Hi Julia! Thank you for this video! I was wondering if you ever try to sketch while walking? Is there a technique for it?
These days I take it more slowly, I like to sit down while I sketch. I would probably walk into lamp posts or people if I attempted to draw while I'm walking! ;-)
I use FB to advance my brand of politics because I am a writer, furthermore keeping in contact with family and friends. I don't promote my business as an Engineer on Social Media at all for two reasons: first I do not stuggle to find work, and secondly because my B2B communication is guaranteed to be confidential. Your absolutely correct Julia, there is a dissatifaction and sapping of creativity and valuable time that comes with X, Instagram, and FB, that said, there's really not much more I can add-I can't rely on these platforms for anything...I need to learn about who I'm friends with and even more who will instruct me. I'm glad you continued to reach out to me Julia. Blessing.
Great sketchbook drawings!
The only problem for me is art thievery, other than that my focus is polishing my skills each day
O thought Germany was beautiful when I visited and I could see glimpses of the brothers Grimm uberall
I enjoyed this so much! Losing a highlight in an eye is something that can easily happen, and I have been looking for an opaque fine pen for whiskers, highlights, etc. Thank you for sharing your nature watercolor techniques!
This is exactly what I needed. I know the point of these videos is that it takes time and it's not some sort of "instantly get better" quick fix, but after following the video and not much more than 30 minutes of practice my drawings look so much better. This is not to say i'm magically an artist, they are still basic but compared to what I was drawing before anyone could notice the clear difference. The segments about basic shapes and then refining them was clearly explained, and something I'd never understood about "under-drawings" before. Thank you so much for this video!
Your greens and foliage shapes are lovely. The values of the darkest greens against the lightest captivating. I’m happy to be craving to paint watching your videos and not craving to buy things 😊
I’m so delighted to have found your channel. I have searched for new artists to follow for years but CZcams makes it so hard to find anyone often. Your landscapes are mesmeric
I adore that first painting with the orange grass and dark trees and bright green distance. Such a lovely balance and composition and colour combination. The brushwork is lovely too
Completely agree and yes I am also guilty of doing this. I have already started decluttering and required apps and unsubscribing to useless websites that I just delete from my inbox and don’t even read. Excellent advice thank you
Oh yes don't get me started on websites and newsletters, that's something I have to do too!
I have only just discovered you on CZcams and thoroughly enjoy your tutorials. Self taught in basic drawing but I’m ready to get creative again. I have never really thought about using watercolour but I’m keen to learn. What type of coloured pencils are you using? I am tempted to do one of your courses but I’m not sure where to start. One of your basic courses to start with once I go through the PDFs that were emailed. Thank you so much for staying on CZcams.
Thank you and great that you enjoy my tutorials! Currently I don't use colored pencils as much (I think I'm in an ink phase), but I've been happy with Faber Castell Polychromos in the past. I'd say work your way through the PDFs in your own pace and see what topic interests you the most. I show demos and explain basic concepts in each of them.
This looks like such a good class ☺☺
i spent most of my drawing life drawing on the floor surrounded by supplies lol but with headphones on to drown out any chatter in the house. only in the last few years have i had a desk and my back thanks me for it lol😝
Haha yes, our backs need all that comfy furniture at some point. I love working with headphones, too!
Hello Julia, lovely ty! Leonardo was amazing, and he is inspiring, isn't he?! Yay for sketchbooks, ty for sharing your pages. Your class sounds intetesting and accountable.
Thank you Roksanna! Yeah, I'm a big fan of Leonardo too, he was such an interesting person (at least from what we know about him) and of course an amazing artist. To me he is the first nature journaler. :-)
Agree!!
That’s how I like to sketch , inks are fabulous and easy to use but did not know of the waterproof fromR R&K Discovering through you the waterproof sketch inks. I use about the same set of cheap pens that are very useful! For my honey. Many thanks!
There are other waterproof inks, I'm currently testing De Atramentis and Octopus Write & Draw - they don't dry as quickly in the fountain pen.
Which bird is this?
A Eurasian robin.
Your bird painting turned out so wonderful! It was lovely to see all the steps you took to create him. This was a lot of technical info, but I think I understood most of it. It's sad about AI and theft, and I hope you can protect your work as an artist. I looked at your website and your courses. I'm planning to sign up for at least one or more; I just have to choose which one to start with! 😃 I'm sure I need the one for layouts and composition for Nature Journal pages. Thank you for this information and all of your videos. ❤️
Thank you Cynthia! I know it's a lot of techno babble. I'm currently less concerned about my own work - I'm not one of those artists whose entire job has been taken away by AI, I mainly teach these days. But for a lot of background artists in movies and games, editorial illustrators, book covers illustrators it looks pretty dire. And of course the ethical aspect is that the AI was trained without consent from any of us. We live in weird times. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy my courses, I know there so many by now that it can be hard to choose. The layout course was a fun one to make!
Thank you for the great tips!🍄
To be honest you don’t receive enough recognition that you deserve, such a wonderful video!
