They weigh between 15 to 30 pounds and are 2 to 3 feet in length, not including their tail, which can be nearly as long as their body. They cover a large area from Texas south, all the way to Argentina, inhabiting tropical forests, grasslands, and brush-covered areas. They’re solitary night hunters where they prowl almost unnoticed. The quiet ocelot’s most striking features is their exquisite coat which provides camouflage in their habitats. Patient and focused, they wait for the right moment to strike. Their stealth enables them to stalk and pounce with remarkable accuracy. Their diet consists of small mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles. Although cautions and shy, they’re good at climbing, leaping, and swimming.
The adaptable ocelot usually keeps hidden in the undergrowth, protecting their territory by communications, vocalizations, scent marking, and visual displays. They have litters of 2-3 kittens after a gestation period of 70 days. Ocelot kittens are sheltered in a den by their mother who takes care of them for up to 2 years. After that they go out on their own home range where they live their own way. Most people can only see them in zoos.
