WWW.EVENINGEXPRESS.CO.UK Dons fans sing Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen at the Scottish League Cup Final. Aberdeen FC beat Inverness CT 4-2 on penalties
42,784 Dons fans from one city of a population of 230,000! Amazing, then an 80,000 turnout in Aberdeens main street. Just shows the rest of the country that Aberdeen fc are the true sleeping giants of the country.
to my late dad who died 20 years ago he Aberdeen support thick and through he even went to gothebug for final 1982 and the Don won rest in peace dad xxxxx
Aberdeen are a massive club, and as you can see their fans have no problem a 60,000 seater stadium. Scottish football needs a complete revamp, because we have so many big clubs, and if the quality of football was good and other clubs besides Celtic and Rangers had a chance at winning anything, attendances would go right up. Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs are the next three biggest clubs after Celtic and Rangers. And then there's Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Dundee United and Dundee. All of these clubs could pull in a large support at a cup final. They need to revamp the Scottish game, as well as all these club's stadiums. Hearts are planning to increase their capacity to 25,000, and Aberdeen is also planning a new stadium, hopefully of the same capaicty. Hibs already increased their capacity to 20,000, and clubs like Motherwell and Killie should have at least 15 or 20k seater stadiums. Anything below 15k is just unacceptable, to be honest. The SFA needs to take a serious look at the state of our game, and the lack of decent stadiums in Scotland. I think Scotland and Northern Ireland should have a joint league. The biggest and best clubs in both countries could become the Premiership. A big rivalry like Linfield vs Glentoran would really spice the Scottish game up, and there's a couple of other fairly big size clubs over there, (such as Cliftonville and Crusaders), who could come into the Premiership. One thing is for sure: things can't go on the way they are in Scotland, because our game is dying. We need drastic changes, and soon. I really think a merger with Northern Ireland could be good for the game, and good for both countries. What does anyone else think of this proposition?
The Irish clubs have very little to offer tbf. I agree change is needed to capatalise on what Scotland has, but I would tend to lean towards Stuart Flemings suggestion. For now the top league in Scotland needs all the bigger clubs there . I think summer football HAS to be given serious consideration, that , along with reduced entrance fee would be a step forward, SKY/BT would offer more for Summer football as they dont have any football to show then
So just have bigger stadiums? No ideas to actually fill them. Aberdeen average 15k and they don't have any city rival to fill it 4 times a season so 20k is fine for them and same with the Edinburgh 2. But Kilmarnock have a 20k stadium when they average about 5 that's too big. Also Northern Irish clubs would add little, it would just add to the sectarianism. Also Dunfermline have as big a fan base as Motherwell, Killie and Dundee.
7 years on from this comment and nothing much has changed, just shows us. Scottish football definitely needs a revamp, starting with at least a bigger league so hopefully the bigger teams stuck in the lower leagues such as Falkirk and Dunfermline can come up. Realistically, to stop the Glasgow two’s dominance, they should really just go down to England. Regarding the Northern Irish league, could be a good idea but only Linfield and a couple of others would add to our game.
40,000 travelling fans, that's what.. about a fifth or sixth of the population of Aberdeen? That's a staggering turnout, must have been Dons from all corners of Scotland. They deserved to win just by that support alone :)
I have had the very good fortune to have visited 37 out of the 38 original league grounds, and got to Pittodrie 3 times and it was one of the hardest places to go...The punters up there could be a tad rough so it was always guid to make the supporters bus.I would rate that ground 9 outta 10 just because they could make you feel intimidated but hey let's not forget the shot in the arm scottish fitbaw needed when dons won the European cup winners cup..Very pleasant feeling seeing a club from my country beating the mighty Real Madrid.Superb 🏴
honestly the best support of any club out side the old firm. Just a stunning turn out and the players entrance with the cards was amazing. Applause guys. Legends one and all
Hearts have always have had the 3rd best support ever, higher than Rangers and Celtic at times , look at the average attendance history of Scottish clubs
@@yippyialeftside8351 Hearts have a great home support, but shite away. I've seen times at pittodrie when theres like sub 100 travelling fans. Also we've never been relegated before and won two european trophies so you'll always be behind us. Always.
@@b0bd0le86 ok faire enough not a fan of either I support Brighton, just interested in scottish football and who else is out there apart the old firm, would be great to have other clubs challenging for trophies like the 80s n 90s , I mean Aberdeen were pretty decent 87 94 95 ish after Fergie left , other managers cup finals cups 2nd in league celtic nowhere at times
How much better does Celtic park look than Hampden, I’m biased but watching this , it looks like a place for a cup final , I just can not get the magical feeling for Hampden a national stadium should have
Behind both goals at hampden your a mile away and them big openings theve got for ambulances there 2 big u cud fly a jumbo jet thru them don't need to be that big u c get 3000 there there of they made them opening s smaller not keen on that slanty roof either better atmosphere at celtic Park or ibrox fans right behind the goal close
I’m a Celtic fan. And I despise Aberdeen Football Club because of our rivalry. (Although we can both agree the Huns are the worst fuckers in Scotland) Anyway, to see Aberdeen be able to sell nearly 50,000 tickets for a cup final is very very disappointing when you reflect that on their regular attendance in Aberdeen. This video shows how piss poor their support is compare to what it could be. All the Part time supporters need to get their finger out of their arse and start selling out their home ground on a regular basis. Same for Hibs and Hearts and Dundee United etc... they could sell thousands if their part timers choose to be full time. And then you might start seeing these teams challenge for the title on a more regular yearly occurrence and make the league more exciting. Only seeing 25 plus thousand Aberdeen Hibs etc only cause their in a cup final is shocking and embarrassing for the full time supporters. Football without the fans is nothing.

Mad respect for Aberdeen filling that huge stadium.
Celtic fan but my mum would always sing this to me when I was young for some reason and I will always remember it
My grandmother sang it to me and she was from North Lanarkshire and never had been to Aberdeen

It sounds so much better when it's sung the proper way by 40,000 fans rather than shouted by 15,000 during a game.
