  • Monday was one of the most difficult days for everyone in the UNC/Chapel Hill community. As someone who has spoken directly to hundreds of current and future students, felt it was necessary to share some of my thoughts on the situation. Apologies for it being sorta drawn out and random, literally had zero plan going into this video, just was talking from the top of my head. I don't think this all should detract anyone from the university, but I understand why it may. So sorry for everyone who had to go through it, and I'm heartbroken for Zijie Yan and his family. If you need anything, pleeease reach out.
Have been taking a break from content while I transition post-senior year, but more regular college and non-college content coming starting next week. Appreciate you all

Thanks for the video man. I started watching you while I was applying to Carolina, and now I’m in my North Campus dorm room as a first year watching this video. I’m from Illinois and being at Chapel Hill is very surreal. I was at the Bell Tower at the time of the shooting and had to run to Lenoir to hide. Everything is still very foreign to me so I wanted to thank you for helping me get a grasp of what it means to be at Carolina.

Of course! Yeah man I can’t imagine how that was like. Sorry that that had to be one of your first experiences at UNC, but I’m sure it’s just going to get better with time. Hope you get to feel the other version of Carolina very soon!!

It was so eerie seeing the pit completely empty and silent when it was happening.

I always thought to myself “I know everyone says you never think it will be you until it’s you, but it can’t ACTUALLY happen to me.”
2 armed people on campus later, I think MUCH differently.

SO, I went to UNC and graduated in 2017.....and feel like what Im about about to say may not come across the way I want it to, but I''ll say it anyway. I spent 18 months in Amsterdam, and traveled around Europe..especially Germany. People in Europe take care of each other, and watch out for each other. The mind-set of people there is completely different than that of the USA. Here, and especially CH, people don't seem to care about much at all. and nobody really has your back. As a psych major, I am compelled to say that people in the USA are angry and uptight all the time. This comes out as snobbiness, unfriendliness, and and the suicide rate in the USA is 120% higher than in Europe. People only seem to care about what affects THEM, and not what affects to community as a whole. There are many people dealing with many different types of life issues such as separation from their family, depression and all sorts of disadvantageous mental conditions that I describe as "lack of the ability to manage the mind". So, you have mass shootings, or targeted-shootings like the one in CH. As a psych major, you develop an understanding as to why these things occur. Until people begin to care for one another, and make other people feel valued...especially people who have alot of struggles....there will continue to be killings, suicides and what most people need to understand is that these things have nothing to do with race, politics or any false ideology.....they come from a lack of purpose, lack of community and a lack of a sense of being able to depend on other people when you need them. This is what drives these events. Guns are not the problem..PEOPLE are the problem. Its ironic that at the same moment the shooting took place on the UNC campus, there was a "anti-gun violence" conference taking place in Durham.

It's the product of Obama/Democrat doctrine of divide and rule, according to random categories.
I did my PhD here in the USA and we had each other's backs because we all were crawling through the salt mines together, including my coadviser who was newly hired.
They don't exactly hold your hands but we acknowledged that the lab worked as a team and not one was a know it all.
It was tough and we expected it to be tough. Wouldn't be a PhD program if it wasn't.
Having said that, I did notice that UNC has been in the news for this kind of campus violence consistently.

Wow I just noticed that you said you're a psych major and for people in your field to be so unfeeling is so problematic and symptomatic of a profound mass psychosis which has to be addressed pronto.

@@cynthiagonzalez658 I didn't say people in my field are unfeeling. I said that the main reason there are mass-shootings is because others feel uncared for, and I stated that the mindset of most Europeans is one where everyone watches out for each other and takes care of each other. Being unfeeling is not problematic. Showing apathy is the issue. But no one is born this way. Youre influenced by your environment, and if people treat you badly especially when your young, you can grow up..."unfeeling". But addressing the issue with tighter gun laws and bigger police presence isn't going to solve the current pandemic in the USA of people shooting each other. Making sure people are cared for will solve the issue.

IDK what support structures you have in UNC. Like I said, when I was in the PhD program in another state, we generally had each other's backs. We were not "chummy" but no one was allowed to be apathetic. The project people have to work together. Your personal problems though, are your own. Handle it or see a professional. I did my master's in Canada. Same thing. If you can't take care of your personal problems, that would carry into your entire life beyond grad school. Come on. This is part of growing up.

@@cynthiagonzalez658 I don't think you read my comment correctly and I think you totally missed my point. I wasn't talking about support structures at UNC. I was talking about what may lead up to someone shooting someone. reading lessons?

NC as a whole is a wonderful place. Thank you for sharing a video with this stance and promoting the love and positivity of the community and the school. I have the deepest sympathy for the family of the professor. I can’t begin to imagine the horror they are going through. I am keeping them lifted in my thoughts and prayers. I do believe the school needs to return to classes and events to began to heal and provide counselors for students who have concerns to visit. Another poster said something regarding the lack of care or compassion towards others is a problem we are facing today. I am older than your generation, so perhaps that is the case now. I know everyone gets absorbed with their own life and how busy they are but I tend to think most people still care for others; such as neighbors and friends. Perhaps, this is not to the degree it was when I was younger though. On campus, are there not still groups that gather to do things together? Is there not community outreach? I hope there is. I hope as humans we are all trying to be more empathetic to each other. 🩵💙🩵
