How to Make an adjustable table saw push stick

  • Every time I walk in the house, after using my power tools, my wife looks over at me to count my fingers, as if I would nonchalantly walk through the house for a couple band-aids after cutting off a finger. One of the most dangerous tools in the shop is the Table saw, but there a ways to make it easy and safe to use. First and foremost, know how your saw works, second, keep your fingers far away from the blade. Even if your hands are far away from the blade, they can be sucked in with the board in the blink of an eye. So add another layer of protection by making a push stick. It's an easy project that helps keep you safer in the shop while learning a few new skills in the process.
    Free Plans: theeverymaker....
    I've loved building things from a young age and I believe anyone can get out to the shop and make things. I want to inspire people to go out there and learn something new, to experience the thrill of taking a project from the moment of inspiration to a finished piece. Also, my wife has a very long honey-do list for me and I might as well make videos doing it.

    I recently created a free set of plans. I've made a few adjustments to the overall design, but it's still simple to make and even better than before! Free Plans: theeverymaker.com/product/adjustable-table-saw-push-stick/

    I've seen SO MANY push sticks videos and web pages. But have never seen a SO straight forward, simple to use and easy to build invention. But being somehow lazy, i hoped getting a sketch.. a drawing that I can print then glue ...etc. Well !!! You jut made my day with your full drawings and instructions... THANK YOU SIR !!!

    one thing I did on my push sticks is to glue sandpaper to the bottom. Gives great control with no slipping

    • @TheEveryMaker
      @TheEveryMaker  Před rokem

      The only reason I didn't do that is because I had a project I was working on that had a finish already applied. I had considered other options, a rubber matt, shelf liner material, but ultimately I was happy with the raw edge. I think I would put sandpaper on one if I make another, it does help a lot!

    A great push stick build, most push stick videos i see similar to yours, always has the permanent leg at the back, were as yours is adjustable. Well done for doing that and the only change i would have done, is one of those bought black knobs instead of a homemade one, i have seen plywood made ones split if too much tightness, is applied to them. Great build again and well done.

    Nick, I like the push stick build. GREAT basis for securing the cut piece. The ONLY concern I would have is that if you are cutting something THIN, say, 1/4". etc. you will be cutting into the push stick body. No problem until the saw blade hits the bottom bolt that holds the adjustable lip. THOUGHT: maybe make the bottom pin out of wood with a bolt-like head on it so IF the blade grazes it you still get to keep your fingers and saw blade.

    • @TheEveryMaker
      @TheEveryMaker  Před 5 lety

      I certainly understand your concern and thought about that considerably myself. I've cut into the push stick body several times and there is plenty of space between the bottom of the stick and the bolt. You don't want to have the blade that much higher than the thickness of what you're cutting through. Once that starts getting worn out, I'll just cut the bottom off and glue on a new piece of wood. But there is more than enough to keep the bolt away from the blade.

    • @TheEveryMaker
      @TheEveryMaker  Před 5 lety

      I'm not sure I know entirely what you mean about it not being finger safe for 2x material? You don't want to cut very far into the push stick, so if you are cutting far enough to hit the finger hole, your blade is set way too high. Are you talking about something slipping and the push stick falling down on the blade? The design here is to keep your fingers a few inches away from the top of the material you are cutting while keeping the material moving forward. It should keep your fingers plenty far away from the blade under proper use.

    Nick, I was lead to believe that the safest push stick should be cut from plywood. The explanation is that the table saw vibration on a solid piece of wood could cause it to split down the grain at the most inconvenient of times. Since plywood is cris-crossed grain, that usually does not happen. Just asking. The internet is full of opposing opinions.

    • @TheEveryMaker
      @TheEveryMaker  Před 5 lety

      I have used both hardwood and plywood push sticks and never had one split on me. The long thin push sticks are better made out of plywood, as I can see those splitting just from the pressure if there are any issues along the grain. In this case though, the wood I used is solid without any checking and I feel comfortable using it. If I do notice any checking though, I will retire it and make a new one. Good question, it's always best to be safe!

      @@TheEveryMaker Perhaps making the same exact shape of pushstick, but making it out of 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood glued together would address this issue (if it proved to be an issue at all). It would also save you the hassle of having to flatten the stock with a hand plane/sander.

    • @TheEveryMaker
      @TheEveryMaker  Před 5 lety

    I’m new to your channel. Came across it bc I want to make my own push stick for many of the same reasons you mentioned. When cutting plywood for instance if there isn’t even pressure across the saw blade you get tons more splintering and filing is a pain or you lose so much material at the edge that was pretty much a waste. I subscribed bc I loved your speech at the end. Really resonated with me. You love woodworking and simply want to collaborate with anyone interested in it, starting, intermediate or expert. My one question is what happened to posting every other Thursday? I looked at the latest posts on your channel and saw the last video was over 10 months ago.

      I replied to someone with dimensions. I plan on having plans on my website, just taking longer than expected. The push stick is 6 1/4" tall and 14 3/4" long, not including the heel. If I were to do it over again, I'd probably make a slightly shorter one, at about 12 1/2 to 13". That would fit the space between the blade and the front of the saw a little bit better, so it depends on the size of your saw.
