- This trail is a ton of fun, especially in a 1-ton truck! Great for all types of vehicles and drivers of all skill levels, you won't want to pass this one up. Here is an overview of what to expect and a recap of how the suburban handled the terrain.

I came here to see this awesome Suburban in action, after seeing it showcased on Trail Recon. Great video. I was not disappointed.
Thanks dude! Cant wait to take it out again. What are you driving?
Fortune and Death I drive a stock 2018 GMC Sierra. I had a lifted 2008 Canyon. I loved wheeling with it, but without many trails nearby, I could not get it off road as often as I liked. So, now I own a 1/10 scale RC crawler that I can legally drive almost anywhere!
Well now I know I could take my Tundra through this. Was concerned it would be way to big!
Let’s hear it for the cameraman!!
I would hire him to do a video great work
It was great seeing the Suburban do this!
Right on!
Just want to say, I have watched this video so much and your rig is the inspiration for my 92 K1500 Suburban build.
Thanks man, I'm glad you like it. Good luck with your build and shoot me any questions you have to my Instagram. 🤙🏻
I’m going here this weekend. I want a suburban for me and the kids. Love seeing how capable this beast is. But I also want my three sons to sit separate from each other so I don’t have to hear, “Stop it! Quit touching me!!”
With three rows they can each have their own! Have fun on Strawberry. One of my favorite trails!
Love that Suburban man! I almost never see these videos until I saw yours. Well done and keep it coming!
Definitely rare to see a full size out on the trail. Especially a Suburban. Lots of fun though 🤙🏻
I did this entire course in one day and doing it in my 1983 chevrolet citation front wheel drive car with the 2.5 4cyl.
Hell yeah!
sweet man! i used to work at kirkwood mtn. this is a wonderful part of the world! did a lot of exploring and camping out there. happy trails
I really enjoyed this trail. I'm hoping to put together a annual run there!
Love the video, dude! I'm starting my overland build with an 8.1L 04' Suburban. Love seeing trails so close to home. Not far from Sacramento. Need to start with a 6" lift then work from there.
Thanks dude! This is one of my favorite trails. Not too far and easy enough to bring the family. 🤙🏻
I love this! I built my 94 burb and take it everywhere they are beast!!
I love Suburbans too 🤘🏻
This is the nicest good looking suburba you have man.. I'm jealous..
Great Suburban vid...awesome Suburban build right there! I have two GMT800 era Suburban vids on my channel with IFS if anyone is looking for that type of content...do a bit of rock downhill and assessment of a Suburban as an overland vehicle.
This video is so well shot simple, but perfect.
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. 🤙🏻
Thanks for not using muzak during your video.........Peace
the engine sound is just awesome!!
Thanks dude. Gotta love that V8 with a Flowmaster! 🤙🏻
Great video. Burb looks really good and performs really well.
Thanks dude!
Nice burban man! I love mine, takes the family anywhere! Mine is a 2003 so I have the crappy coil spring rear end, but front and rear lockers. And a breathing aid! Supercharged! Happy trails man.
Thanks dude! We enjoy it a lot.
Is yours a 1500 or 2500? I haven't been able to find a front locker for mine
@@amishadowbanned6264 its a 1500 its a lsd up front i was stoned i guess! Lol its getting straight axle swap then it will have a locker. I wasnt able to find a locker for that crap ifs either.
Awesome build on that lift ..I have an 01 that I’d love to lift that high ..and then hit this trail as well ..great video
Thanks dude!
That thing is a beast!! love it!
Looks like a great time.. I think I’ve been there with a Land Rover group , it kinda shows you how capable those over priced maintenance lovers are but they did well in snow and ice conditions but that run is absolutely amazing and yes, I got rid of the LR3 for an 89’ C2500 .. saving tons of money and frustration
I've seen some cool land rover setups on the trail, but a SAS chevy does particularly well! I heard this trail is now a dirt road as they needed easy access for fire trucks during fire season. Hope thays not the case. We really like this area 🤙🏻
This video just came up in my feed today and I want to try this been thinking about off-roading my 85 burb after I rebuild it never tried before but looks fun
It's a really great time! The long wheelbase does well on the trails we drove. Just start easy and see where your comfort level is 👍🏻
Somehow this is really satisfying
Glad you like it! More to come soon!
Thanks! Good video.
I have a 99 gmc suburban iv been turning into an overland vehicle. Getting ready to hit the road in about 2 weeks. Though i dont have the lift amd suspension you got. It gives me a bit more confidence in the burban to get down seeing yours get it lol. Looks good btw 👍
I think they are absolutely ideal for overlanding. The solid axle swap helped a lot with big obstacles, but it great stock too. 🤙🏻
Nice rig bud, I have a 97 'burban I'm trying to rig up, and it's hard because there are not alot of videos, and yours seems the most practical to my vision. Keep them coming, really enjoying them💯🤟
Thanks dude! There is a ton of info on Pirate4x4 including a thread I started and Offroad Design's website has some good stuff too. Good luck and let me know if I can help with anything. 🤙🏻
@@FortuneOffRoad for sure my guy, I was going along for the more elusive "Search and rescue" style, heavier duty build and what not, but I'm getting all kids of info from mechanics, and I'm stuck on which one seems more logical, and thanks for coming across your videos this is almost the exact deal I'd like to do.
Watched the whole video, looks like a lot of fun
Thanks dude! It is a ton of fun, especially with the family.
im pretty sure i watched this video quite a few times before buying my suburban. i was looking at 1500s and had some good deals. i found this one suburban but the pics were kinda blurry for cheaper than the rest. well with my luck when i went to check it out. it was a damn 1994 k2500 7.4 454 with the 4L80E transmission. bought it for $2500 bucks. best investment ever and i know for damn sure i can handle a trail like this easily
Sounds like a good truck! I hope you get out on the trails. 7.4 and 4l80e make a great combo. 🤙🏻
Big suburban just idled over everything. Makes me want to start working on my squarebody K20 suburban.
I love squarebody chevys! I hope you do it, people love seeing them on the trail. 🤘🏻
@@FortuneOffRoad Hopefully this spring/summer. Picked it up a few months back. She's as rough as a stucco bathtub but I couldn't pass up a K20 4-spd suburban.
Looking forward to taking my k5 here! Great video
Thanks dude! One of our favorite trails. A little tight for us full size guys. 🤙🏻
That’s one nice gmt400
Loved the video. I have 1997 chevy suburban K2500 with a 5.7. I currently have 33s on 16s. I'll definitely need some bigger tires before I hit the trails! I was wondering if you remembered where you got your front bumper? I have a winch but I have to mount it in a cradle on my current front bumpers front hitch mount. Again, love the video, and definitely subscribing!
Thanks dude, glad you liked it! Ya know, I wouldn't wait to wheel it. 33s should cut it on the trail, just maybe not rock crawling. The bumpers are from Logans Metal! They sell some ebay too. If you call them they can customize them. See you out there!
Great video enjoyed it very much
Nice man! When i bring tue fam down lets go! Will request frame sliders for my truck custom built please and thank you💯😜
sweet! came here for suburban, found the whole lot of goldmine!!! WIN
any ease-medium trails in midwest/south?
Welcome! I live on the west coast and haven't ventured out there yet.
I see a suburban in my near future...
Great platform!
so cool
Parece el camino de mi rancho 🇲🇽
es un camino de tierra ahora. un incendio lo destruyó recientemente
I want to build a 2500 for mainly work rig but still run around the high desert here in Idaho. Just sold a 79 suburban do a 90's burb would be a nice upgrade.
I had a similar change. Went from a 84 k30 to this 1997 k1500 and the upgraded components in the interior and engine were huge!
Cool video! Do you have extra coolers on the transmission and engine? What brand lockers are you using OX?
Thanks dude! No extra coolers on either. We go easy and slow so there hasn't been a need yet, although I would like to get a trans temp gauge. Lockers are both Detroits. 🤙🏻
I love this dude great job! What size tires you runnin?
Thanks man! These are 37x12.50 on a 17" wheel.
Just bought my 99 burb k2500 with 454 engine! Only 131xxx miles🤘🏼
Dude that's awesome. I kinda wish I would've went that route! Thats low mileage too. Mine is at 123k right now. 🤙🏻
Fortune Off-Road oh yeah they are just getting warmed up at this point ;) I just found out it had a transmission rebuild back in 2014 though! 😬 I hope it stands the test of time wish me luck!
@@FortuneOffRoad update: the 454 blew up its first time on sand dunes. U did not go the wrong route with the 350! Thinking of getting one now or 5.3 seems like the better choice.
@@209Fightclub sorry to hear that dude. 5.3 has a leg up on the 5.7 for sure. Hopefully you had some fun while it lasted!
Your Suburban looks like the older sister to mine, a '99 K2500 using the 454 to push 35's. My truck only has 113,000 miles on her. What CB antennae bracket is that???
I like those 2500 454 Burbs. Joe does yours do on fuel economy? My odometer is about 122k. It's the Firestik SS-174!
Fortune and Death I live across the road from the high school where I teach Ag, so not much commuting. I have to drive it about a mile per day, puttering around our little school doing little errands. I didn’t drive it anywhere, except that kind of stuff for a month and got 8 mpg. The next month, I drove on a 1,000 mile road trip to South Georgia, pulling a 14’ canoe trailer, loaded with 7 canoes and 7 men’s gear for a 5 day trip across the Okefenokee Swamp. I drove around 80 all the way. I kept up with mileage and fuel at each fill up. Filled up when I got home and average 11.9 mpg. 🤷🏻♂️😂 Does the fire stick come with that bracket that fits around your hood?
@@mountainsmoore3657 When my 1500 was stock I could easily pull 20 mpg on the highway, closer to 15 now. That bracket is sold separately and it generic, fits most trucks I think.
Fortune and Death The 35s and my heavy foot do not contribute to fuel economy. Thankfully I don’t have a long commute, and it isn’t even my “daily driver” at this point. Just my play truck now. Camping, canoeing, hiking, etc.
Fortune and Death As far as fuel mileage, my ‘05 Tahoe gets about 21 on the highway and my wife’s ‘13 Yukon XL with 6.0 gets around 18-19 on the highway. We have too many big vehicles...we counted up and can haul 34 people in our 5 vehicles. 🤦🏻♂️😂
Love the video man!!! I have a 1999 K1500 Suburban that needs to go on that trail. Any info on that group you went with would be awesome.
This is the 4x4 Trailbusters club out of Vacaville, California.
@@FortuneOffRoad
Thanks man!!! Live in Rocklin so I'll look them up.
Awesome video! Where did you get your rock sliders from ?
Thanks dude! I built them out of 2x6, 2x2 tube, and 1/8" plate. We'll see if they hold up, haven't hit anything yet.
What locker do you have in front I have a 97 ' k2500 and I can't find one for a 9.25" front diff ?
It has a dana 60 swapped in with a detroit locker
If got a 2000 Tahoe z71 obs, I’d love to do this kind of setup sometime in the near future
It's a lot of work, but it pays off big time off road. 🤘🏻
I bet. If I may ask how much start to finish did it end up costing. And do you use it everyday? I subscribed. Love the content
@@robmora2703 it was about $5,500 to build the truck. I drove it on Fridays and we went camping in it a lot. I ended up having to sell it because I needed something a little more highway friend that could also tow. We picked up a 2020 Colorado to replace.
Dang that’s a sick suburban! I’ve got a 07 suburban that I want to take on trails like this. What sized lift kit on that thing? I don’t imagine I could fit 37” tires on mine. That’s crazy
Its about 7" of lift, made 37s possible by pushing the front solid axle forward 2"! 🤙🏻
Looks fun to mountain bike
Definitely would be. I would go in from the south side and ride down the trail. 🤙🏻
You seem to like to drive over rocks and other obstacles that you can easily go around. Is that what you always do or is that to show what your burb can do?
This is a really easy trail so I was crawling over everything I could. The front springs on the Suburban needed breaking in too! 🤙🏻
Hope you give your camera man a raise lol
Dude, he walked like a third of that trail to get me those shots. Needless to say he fell asleep on the way home.
@@FortuneOffRoad lil guy was all tuckered out lol
Great video who did the solid axle swap up front and gear is it
I did the SAS using the Off Road Design kit. It has 4.88 and a Detroit locker.
I just got a k2500 GMC suburban. Excited to upgrade it. Where did you get your bumpers from?
Logans Metal. Can buy them on ebay too!
What size lift for those 37’s? I would like to know because I have a 2005 suburban that needs a lift and tires. Right now I am thinking 6” lift and 35’s.
That sounds like a good combination. I'm at about 7" all around.
I have 35s on my o3 seirra 2500 hd ... no lift but I have a custom front bumper..... I'd say 33s on my tahoe are to small it's a 02 tahoe all stock .... 35s may fit with stock or 3 inch level keys at worst .....
Awesome rig man. I’m trying to build mine like that. What bumper is that?
Thanks dude! It's made by logans metal. You can find them on Ebay, or Morris 4x4. This truck has done awesome on the trails with the SAS. Good luck with yours!
Cool vid! Hey how do u install double shocks in the front lol..ive seen it alot but how do u place them in there?
I've never done that before. Mine are single shocks with a reservoir. If you need to run double shocks, you probably need stiffer suspension or a higher valving shock. As long as the shocks are mounted parallel, I imagine you could mount them any way you want as long as they don't touch each other. 👍🏻
Cool video! Did you need 37s or would 35s work just as well for this Trail? I don’t want to go any taller than 7” lift on my (already Nor Cal modded) Suburban. I want to keep the center of gravity low with good ground clearance though. The roof of my rig is already just under 7’ (for parking garages) and it’s 7’ wide with the drop differential knuckle kit.
The trail isn't too hard, its really just steep. You could do it with 31s, just have to drive carefully and make sure you're not dragging your differential. 🤙🏻
Fortune Off-Road Cool thanks!
How hard was the ORD SAS kit to install? Does it just bolt on or is there much welding required?
For the most part it was easy. Although I did have clearance issues with exhaust and coolant lines that both had to be cut and rerouted. Was expecting to do either. So that was a little bit of a headache. Otherwise, very stout. A lot of drilling!
What gearing does the suburban have?
4.88, wish I would've done 5.13 with the 37s
Dope
What front end and kit did you use? I have a 94 k2500 suburban
OffRoadDesign 36.5" kit. Check out my Suburban walk-around video for more details! 🤙🏻
Where did you get the rear bumper from and the sas kit
Bumper is logans metal and the sas kit is ORD. Heres a video that lists everything 🤙🏻czcams.com/video/3hFykzqBPIo/video.html
Really like the tires, how bad do they hum with normal driving??
Actually not bad! I would definitely buy some again. Great tires all around. Wondering if I should put some on the Colorado... 🤙🏻
Definitely would 💯 been looking at some tires for a couple of days and definitely will be getting a set of these
What antenna do you have and how’d you mount it
FireStik FL3-B antenna, mounted to a FireStik SS-174 Hood Channel Mount
🤙🏻
"You cant just force a Yeah Dude" *Stevo
I have a stock 99 suburban... I want to raise it up.. what kit did you use on you burban.. thanks for the info
One of my first videos was a walk around that covered most of it. That would do a better job than me describing it here, but really it was a custom job where I literally cut off all of the front suspension and swapped in a solid front axle from a 1991 F-350. If you're just looking g for a lift i would stay around 4-6" at the most. More than that and things get expensive to do right. 🤙🏻
Was wondering what front axle are you running A dana 44 or 60?
1991 Ford Dana 60 with 4.88 gears and a Detroit locker. 🤙🏻
what exhaust is on this suburban?
Stock with a Flowmaster Super 40
Do you think a stock 94 k2500 suburban could make it to the campgrounds?
Yes, but only if you come in from the opposite side.
@@FortuneOffRoad what road would be the opposite side? The only thing I will have done to the suburban is a rear locker and 33s
@@theautoanswerman8063 The rear locker will .=-definitely help. Instead of going in off of 50, you can go up from the bottom side off of 88. That way you can hit the camping areas and then go down, which should be much easier than going up the obstacles.
@@FortuneOffRoad thank you for the info. Should be a fun trip with a 4runner and a new Tacoma 4x4 off-road pro. So I'm the under dog for sure
@@theautoanswerman8063 Being the underdog just gives you better stories! As long as you don't go alone you should be fine. Enjoy!
How good does suburban do compared to jeeps with 35’s in muddy terains
2 door
The long wheelbase of 132"+ helps in most situations that aren't tight, but it's a heavy truck, so not as good in the mid i would imagine. 🤙🏻
Jeeps with 35s on a 2 door will outclass the suburban on the rocks any day of the week in my opinion
What's your suspension setup
Shackle flip and hanger drop in the rear with stock springs. Front is 3" tough country blazer springs with ord sas kit. More details here if you wanna check it out. Have a whole Playlist of Suburban mods on my channel. czcams.com/video/3hFykzqBPIo/video.html
I have a stock 1995 Toyota Tacoma 2 door reg. cab you think it will make it?
Its hard to say. We took a stock 2 door wrangler and they had a hard time. If you have someone go with you they can at least yank you off a rock if you get stuck. You'll at least scrape the underside of the truck. You can turn around if you need too though! 🤙🏻
I went here solo in my 3" lifted 2000 Tundra 4x4 on 33"s and really struggled. Since I was by myself, I turned around, but I'm sure I can complete it if I go back. I'd advise against bringing a stock Tacoma.
@@frankwilliams5766 you should try it again with a group and a good spotter. Really great trail if you can get past the 3 obstacles. 🤙🏻
What gears?
4.88 in the axles
@@FortuneOffRoad do you think 4.88s can work with 40s with a doubler
Is that a stock 4L60E
Yeah, completely stock and nearly dead at this point
