Salvinos JR Models Junior Johnson Racing 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Darrell Waltrip from Monogram tooling. Molded in paintable white for the first time.
Darrell Lee Waltrip (born February 5, 1947) is an American motorsports analyst, author, former national television broadcaster, and stock car driver. He raced from 1972 to 2000 in the former NASCAR Winston Cup Series (now called the NASCAR Cup Series), most notably driving the No. 17 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. Waltrip is a three-time Cup Series champion (1981, 1982, 1985).
Posting a modern NASCAR series record of 22 top five finishes in 1983 and 21 top five finishes both in 1981 and 1986, Waltrip won 84 NASCAR Cup Series races, including the 1989 Daytona 500, a record five in the Coca-Cola 600 (formerly the World 600) (1978, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1989), and a track and Series record for any driver at Bristol Motor Speedway with 12 (seven consecutive from 1981 to 1984). Those victories tie him with Bobby Allison for fourth on the NASCAR's all-time wins list in the Cup Series and place him second to Jeff Gordon for the most wins in NASCAR's modern era. He is ranked second for all-time pole positions with 59, including all-time highs with 35 on short tracks and eight on road courses. Competing in 809 Cup starts over four decades and 29 years (1972-2000), he has scored 271 Top 5s and 390 Top 10s. Winning $19,886,666.00 in posted earnings, he became the first NASCAR driver to be awarded over $10 million in race winnings, more than $26 million in today's currency.
Waltrip has additionally won 13 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series races, seven American Speed Association (ASA) races, three IROC races, two Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) races, two NASCAR All-American Challenge Series events, two All Pro Racing Association races, and a USAC race. He competed in the 24 Hours of Daytona. He also holds the all-time track record 67 wins at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee, including NASCAR, USAC, ASA, and local Late Model Sportsman NASCAR sanctioned series races. He still holds many NASCAR records, more than a decade after his retirement as an active driver.
He has also won many awards in NASCAR. That includes two for NASCAR's Most Popular Driver Award (1989, 1990), three for "American Driver of the Year" (1979, 1981, 1982), and "NASCAR's Driver of the Decade" for the 1980s, as well as three for "National Motorsports Press Association Driver of the Year" (1977, 1981, and 1982), two for "Auto Racing Digest Driver of the Year" (1981 and 1982), the first "Tennessee Professional Athlete of the Year" (1979), one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998, and the Bill France "Award of Excellence" in 2000. He has been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America for 2003 the International Motorsports Hall of Fame for 2005. After being nominated for the inaugural 2010 and 2011 classes, he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame's 2012 class.
Waltrip served as a color analyst for Fox Sports alongside Mike Joy, and Jeff Gordon, a columnist at Foxsports.com, and an author. He is the older brother of former NASCAR driver and the now defunct MWR team owner Michael Waltrip. Waltrip retired from the commentary box at the conclusion of Fox's broadcast schedule for the 2019 NASCAR season in June 2019.
Stock car racing is a form of automobile racing found mainly and most prominently in the United States and Canada, with New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Great Britain and Brazil[1] also having forms of stock car auto racing. Traditionally, races are run on oval tracks measuring approximately 0.25 to 2.66 miles (0.4 to 4.3 kilometers). The world's largest governing body for stock car racing is the American NASCAR, and its NASCAR Cup Series is the premier top-level series of professional stock car racing. Top-level races typically range between 200 to 600 miles (322 to 966 km) in length. The cars were originally production models ("stock") but are now highly modified.
Top-level stock cars exceed 200 mph (322 km/h)[2][3][4] at speedway tracks and on superspeedway tracks such as Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.[5][6] Contemporary NASCAR-spec top-level cars produce maximum power outputs of 860-900 hp[7][8] from their naturally aspirated V8 engines. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I REALLY dig those 4th gen Monte Carlos. Last of the "Stock Cars" IMO. They actually used a TON of factory sheet metal in these racers. My favorite era in NASCAR.
Beautiful build! Love your builds. It’s bout time for you to call in on Saturday morning during cars and coffee and do an interview with Jim. That would be great for all of us that enjoy your builds.👍👍
I second that motion!
That would be fun, but between two builds per week, videos, etc plus real family life and work it gets hard to take even more time away.
Thanks man!
@@hpiguy I like that idea, and we can record something any time and play it for the Saturday show!
Love the race cars - so sharp looking.
Me too, thanks!
These Salvinos JR race cars are a joy to build!
Every single one!
yeah, Monogram kits were great
For a box-stock, it looks very realistic! It’s all in the detail painting-great job once again!!👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Sweet build! Thanks for pointing out the great quality of the kit, that is what makes us come back for more!
More to come!
I think the red paint you used on the body looks mighty good...colonial red might have been a tad dark. Never second guess yourself. If your happy with your build and had fun building it, that's really all that matters. If I built the car you built exactly like you did, I'd be proud of it. Nice build brother,!
Thanks, yeah it turned out better once I started to assemble it and get the decals on.
This is gorgeous. I've been building model cars for 30 years but that color chassis was the prettiest one I've ever seen. Awesome job
Thanks for watching!
Wow didn't think about using a drill and deep socket for tire sanding, that is pure genius!
Must be new around here lol
Always a chance to learn something new! Thanks!
I love old NASCAR and Dw was one of my favorite. Thank you for doing a open box. I got to get me one of these .
That's a big want in my never ending wants list.... Beautiful Chris
Thank you Gary, take care!
Soooooooo cool, that's a MUST have kit!!!! 👍 👍 👍
Nice vid, Nice build ........ 😉
Thanks 👍
Chicken & Beer indeed! Excellent presentation and build Chris!👏👏👏
Thank you kindly!
Man I'm so glad these pops are out!!! Bringing back a Amazing time in NASCAR!!!!
Yes, the golden era in my opinion.
Good looking kit. Great build review. Thanks for sharing Chris.
Thanks for watching!
Greetings from Portugal. I love NASCAR. Another great job. Beautiful car. Congratulations.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful build!! Would be awesome if you built that Foyt 79 Oldsmobile 442 car in the future, Love seeing these salvino kits on the channel, I gotta grab one
Thanks!
Great looking build, I just started mine last weekend. Rick ✌️
Enjoy it!
Man! You are a lunatic with the rattle cans lol.. love your videos. Keep em coming!
Very nice build Chris. You really have to give Salvinos JR lots of credit for what they have done with those old mold. Even going as far to redesigning some parts. They really are some very nice kits.
Very true!
I use the nascar kits as slump busters. They are really easy kits and go together well.
Always a pleasure to decorate another one.
Always look forward and enjoy your race car builds Chris! Phenomenal job!
Thanks!
Love the race cars models great build Chris thank you for sharing
Thanks!
That's a very beautiful build, my friend! I have one of these (and the #12 sister car) in the stash 😁✌
Awesome! Thank you!
I like the older Monogram kits with the parts not already together. Like the front tube chassis and the rear shock archs under the car
Chicken and Beer gotta love it!! Thanks Chris!
You got that right!
The car came out superb! Awesome Job Chris!
Glad you like it!
This is going to be great
It was fun, I love these kits!
Beautiful Work Once AGAIN Chris, I'm Joining The Salvinos JR Builders Club Friday, I Hear It's Pretty Awesome. Thanks For Sharing Your Fun n God Bless All.
Awesome! Thank you!
Awesome job Chris
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice,awesome job building models
Glad you like them!
Beautiful mate👍
Roll cage and dash were both red except for aluminum gage panel. Radiator was aluminum. Filler panels behind the cage where aluminum but painted a off white that was pretty flakey. I helped to put on a new roof on one of these survivors 2 yrs ago.
OK, is it just me that thinks Chris has some kind of freak superpower? When I use superglue I manage to glue parts of me to myself, to my bench, other people, pets etc and the part I want glueing simply drops off because I missed getting any glue on it! Chris come along, dab, dab, done. Eyes still open, fingers still have finger prints. Just crazy
LOL, it's just practice and a steady hand. I make mistakes all the time too.
Thanks!
Awesome! Love the SS front end.
Me too!
Great job dude! It looks awesome I think! 💯👍🏼😎
Thank you! Cheers!
Another great build you must have enough cars to have your own race meet
LOL, pretty much!
This will be my next purchase at the hobby shop!!! Thanks for the review video!
Hope you enjoy it!
oh and forgot to mention your builds are outstanding... I have learned so much from watching them and I have been modeling for over 40 years.... you have helped me tremendously
Awesome, thank you!
I think Jim told me that the Mono molds they refreshed the molds
I bet seeing this going around the track made many peeps crave beer and chicken :D
wow very nice!
Thanks for visiting!
Another great build and video
Glad you like it!
Real nice bud, as always! 👍👍🤘🤘✌🏻
Thanks for the visit!
@@hpiguy - yes sir you’re mighty welcomed Chris ! No problem buddy!
I'm eagerly awaiting their Dodge and Plymouth Nascar racers....excellent build young padawan! 🍻
Oh yes, I'm waiting on them too!
Soon!
This is a basic question but I’m learning. When you spray parts on the sprue or use clips to hold a part, do you back with a brush for the spots covered or exposed once you cut them from the tree? Or a respray?
Yup, I just touch it up with a brush if needed, like I mention.
Great looking kit and build. Got me to wondering if that body could be put onto a pro street chassis and make a super slick street pounder 🤔
That would be cool!
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
Boogity Boogity Boogity that's a great build.
Thanks!
Great build, Chris! Love the vids. Got a question. Where did you score the garage photo diorama that you used for the pics at the end of this video?
Ebay
Very cool car, nice job.
Thanks!
Just bought my Darrell Waltrip Pepsi Challenger and Dew combo pack
Enjoy!
Hey Chris, one more question about that "food dehydrator" how long do you keep the parts inside it, for the painted to dry? Thank you in advance...
Until they are dry. Hard to say how long it takes because everyone is different.
It drops my drying time by hours though, it hardens very fast now.
just so happens I drive a 1987 Monte Carlo SS in real life!!
That dollar store super glue is the best damn superglue I've ever used.
Works for me!
Pretty cool. I wonder where did the passenger car version of the Aero coupe ended up. Did new Revell took the mold back, or was it sold it too? hmm...
Really, really good result.
No idea, didn't know they even made one.
I built the SS version in a review a while back, great kit.
@@hpiguy Yeah, I saw your build and it was indeed great.
They did at least one edition of the road going Aeroback. I have it, bought it over 20 years ago (still unbuilt). I almost didn't bought it back then, I wanted the version you build, when I saw it. Then someone that was looking at the kits in the store told me that I should buy it as it would be rare. And well, that person was right. I only seen it once built by somebody else. But that's it. I might snap a pic of the box and post it on your FB page, so you can see it.
As usually, very nice construction 👍 How do you choose the primer ? Why did you not apply some white primer on the body ?
I wanted some darker tones under the paint so I used grey.
@@hpiguy Alright, I understand, thank you
what size socket do you use on your drill to scuff the tires
You have to fit it to the tires for that kit.
I never knew that Budweiser car also had a KFC sponsorship and I've seen it so many times. You learn something new every day.
Yeah I saw it was coming out and had to have it!
How long does it take for the Panel Line Accent to dry on the chrome pieces??
I use a dehydrator so it takes like 20 minutes now, but before it takes an hour or so in regular humidity.
I truly enjoy watching you build these . That transmission is a 4 speed not an auto
Thanks!
Yes, I misspoke.
Plenty have been eager to point out something I said wrong.
Thanks again!
Top Shelf as always..
Thanks again!
@@hpiguy No... Thank-you ;D
Is there a stencil available for the Good Year Eagle paint on the tires??
I use the decals. I think there are photoetch stencils, you'd have to google for those.
How long do you wait for the white to dry before taping it off?
I stick it in a dehydrator and it's dry in an hour enough to tape without issues.
Dehydrator. Never even gave that a thought. Thank you
Where can I get that turntable you use to spray the models on?
This isn't a critique in any way, always up for learning new stuff. Why do you use craft paint for roll bar padding? What brand of craft paint? Thank you
Your "chicken and beer" car turned out very nice! I like the garage background seen at the end, where did you get that?
Ebay had them.
Chris, fantastic job again sir,I gotta buy that aj Foyt,ty again for your video
You bet!
Why use a sharpie ink marker and not a paint marker?
Dig your build and just a question
They work very well and dry almost instantly.
This is car that Earnhardt "hooked" at Richmond at the height of the Waltrip/Earnhardt battles. Keep the awesome kits coming
👋😎👍
Thanks!
Awsome build as usual thank you
No problem 👍
Where do you find these models anymore??
My dad use to build these when I was a kid just looking to build a few of these again to go back as a kid at home with dad
modelroundup.com carries them, as shown in the video. Thanks!
Hey Beer and Chicken always go well together. Damn that is a nice model. I don't do a lot of NASCAR models, but it looks like I am going to have to now.
I used to say that too. I have now completed 4 of them since October & working on #5 & #6. They are fun builds.
@@PontiacBanker Some of the NASCAR models I won't build, because they are not made anymore.
Enjoy it!
I feel bad watching these videos because I have 2 models that I haven’t even finished and one is even all painted nice and shiny and I haven’t even finished it, I think I kinda have more of a liking to motorcycles.
You can do it!
@@hpiguy Ill do my dang best
Hey Chris. I just met Cale Yarborough in Timmonsville S.C. It was really cool. What a great guy. He actually drove that car. Just thought I tell ya. Take care man
Weird, every reference says it was driven by Darrel Waltrip and his name is on the car too. Thanks!
I currently use grey primer from Tamiya. I'm going to try out a black primer. Thought I would change things up.
Enjoy!
Great build and review. Surprised to see the bud decals on a model kit again.
Thanks 👍
Orange peel sir....... Teasing. Good stuff.
Nice build video video video. Liked the tips on building the kit.
Glad you enjoyed it
You always make it look so easy good job
Thank you! Cheers!
That real metal chrome blows my mind... Really cool...
Right?
Another great build
Thanks again!
Another great build. The ride height on that is right in the weeds.
Thanks 👍
Good looking model there Chris do you have a 43 car field yet?
I have built most of their Petty cars, yes.
Great looking model!
I think so too!
I would love to see one of the companies doing racing kits make a kit with a transparent body so you can see all the delicious stuff.
There have been some, mostly newer cars.
Are the breathers molded into the valve cover a Salvinos thing?
They aren't molded in. There are markers on the valve covers for the holes you need to drill to glue them in.
@@hpiguy Ok,so they didn’t change.Sorry if you covered that assembly in your video.I missed it.Great build.
Question,?did you clear coat the car? With what future or spray can? And lastly did you put decals on before or after clear? Came out real nice..
I brushed Future on it once done, like I say in the video. Thanks.
"anti chassis-folding-in-half bar." heh.
That's the technical name. ;)
i love 'em chris, but it's getting to be repeats every time one is built
I build the models I want to see.
Thanks for coming along!
Superbe
Thanks!
Have you ever thought to glue on the hood and trunk pins with Modge Podge?
You certainly can.
Mr. rattle can
I hate the headers in these kits. I always cut the crossover tubes off and make them look like conventional headers.
A common modification, yes.
Hey Chris would you build the international transtar 4070 cabover truck that round 2 is supposed to release here soon
Depends what my schedule is like and if they send it.
BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY THAT LOOKS AWESOME
Let's go racing!
You always make it fun!
I try to, thanks!
small block and automatic ?????
Yes, I made a slip of the tongue. Of course it's a 4 speed manual.
@@hpiguy just busting your chops have a great day !!!!
Chris, remember thats the only A.J Foyt kit thats ever been released in the lifetime.
