  • Star Trek: Voyager - Inside the New Adventure, hosted by Robert Picardo. Part 1 of 6. Originally aired on January 14, 1995, shortly before the premier of Star Trek: Voyager, this special is an inside look at the new (at that time) series. Interviewees include Voyager castmembers Kate Mulgrew, Robert Beltran, Roxann Biggs-Dawson, Robert Duncan McNeill, Jennifer Lien, Ethan Phillips, Tim Russ, and Garrett Wang; creators/executive producers Rick Berman, Jeri Taylor, and Michael Piller; supervising producer David Livingston; stunt coordinator Dennis "Danger" Madalone; makeup designer/supervisor Michael Westmore; costume designer Robert Blackman; property master Alan Sims; visual effects producer Dan Curry; matte artist Robert Stromberg; special effects technician Dick Brownfield; and visual effects supervisor David Stipes.
In Part 2, Picardo mentions that his character, the Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH), will be given a name at some point during the series. Little did he know...
In Part 4, Ethan Phillips takes us through a typical day, starting at 3:30 AM.

I love how the opening kind of foreshadowed Enterprise‘s opening unintentionally.

I love that they go on about all the new conflicts that the show promises...from the mouths of writers who utterly forget them for 90% of the subsequent 7 seasons.

I have to say, at age 54, I remember watching the TOS back in the mid 70s as a kid. I have loved it all since then. Watching this, I'm not ashamed to say I get tears in my eyes. They call us nerds, but we are just people who are hopeful for a much better future.

Robert Picardo is one of those people who brought an extra layer of richness to the Star Trek franchise. His contributions to Star Trek are up there with the best.

AWE..love this! Robert Picardo made Voyager a wonderful show in general. I loved him as the Doctor and always laughed out loud at him at his antics. He reminded me of McCoy on TOS in many ways. :) I have been missing Voyager lately and although I've moved on to other shows now, Voyager will always remain a kindred spirit in my heart. That show got me through High School!

I belong to those who adore the Voyager series, for me it was the best of them all because of relevant modern movie-effects, great acting, a slick ship with a correctly lit bridge and a really high tech interior, in my eyes everything looked better than in previous series, also the aliens were more interesting than in ST-TNG. For me it was the most intelligent scifi series I've ever seen, I love it so much.
There one important difference to add. While in the other series they do some lazy cruising being able to run back to mummy Earth, Voyager doesn't have that possibility, they are the REAL explorers, they don't do if for fun, they do it for survival. All the others say: "Pick a direction and we go that way", it sounds a bit lazy while Janeway fights her way back home, also, she was defeating the parasitic Borg Collective via freaking Time Travel, now you're talking! :-)

Voyager, is after TNG my favourite Star Trek Show, together with DS9. Good times... Naivety of the 90s, but the ideas presented in the show will always be relevant.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I respect yours. I would just like to say that the show was about the crew of voyager becoming a family, overcoming their differences and ultimately making it back home to federation space. If what you suggested was how the show was actually made, the crew would have never made it back.

Maybe. On the other hand it would have been satisfyingly true to the show's premise, and made Voyager more than just "another TNG-era show". These issues, had they been dealt with more honestly and consistently throughout the show's run, could have been a good source of material for the show. Instead, a few episodes in, the whole Maquis thing has become a non-issue and almost forgotten.
Though I agree it would have turned out badly if overdone, I think it could have helped the show a lot.

I don't know... I've been rewatching all the Trek shows recently... Three episodes in and I can't deal with any more Voyager. There's just something about the way they dealt with "anomaly" episodes on that show that made it really painful. I can't quite put my finger on it. In the 90s I gave up around season 2, and thought I was just getting sick of Star Trek BS, but in rewatching I think it's specifically a Voyager problem.
I'll probably try to tough it out, see if it gets better.

Watching this, you realize how poorly realized the series was. The producers admitted the challenges of creating unique characters and a new setting, but they just ended up creating bland characters that showed no growth during the series set in a futuristic version of Gilligan’s Island.
The “conflict” between the Marquis and Starfleet crew was shown in all of… 2 episodes. Even the general theme of the show, which is victimizers being victims at the same time (the Kazon are former slaves who overthrew their masters, the Vidiians harvest organs because of they’re suffering from a horrible plague, and seven of nine is a former borg) fits the marquis but not Starfleet. The voyager crew aren’t victims and aren’t victimizers (except for Tuvix).

Man oh man, IMHO Voyager was my favorite Star Trek series. Ms. Bigold (darn auto spell won't let me spell her name correctly). Was awful in the role. Half the time she could not be understood! I
digress. Kate Mulgrew was the perfect choice for the series. But, check out Garret Wang's comments on iMDB, you'll really see how he felt about how he as an actor and his character was badly mistreated. Aside from that, yes, we take offense calling ourselves Indian. We are the Indigenous peoples of North & South of what the white peoples call the Americas! Peace Out!
