    I was in the Boy Scouts in the 1970’s. They had smaller copies of these that were still an official optional part of the Boy Scout uniform back then. I wore them for camping and hiking. They came with instructions and I figured them out as an 11 year old.

    Thanks man you rock! My 12 year old wants to dress like his grandfather did in WWII (I know do the math, my dad would have been 105 yrs old). I purchased a pair from a surplus store with no laces. You have made my day!

    I wear a pair all the time when I go out walking where I might get junk in my shoe or my feet wet. They go great with my roughout boots. I love em. I don't think they're that bad personally. I can get em on pretty quick. I also just realized from your video that my pair is 1 size too big. lol

    Best how to I have found! The top holes appear to confuse some people and they get a bit crazy with tying it off. Thanks!

    good video. i always liked the look of the legging vs the 2 buckle boot. did reenacting years ago, was difficult to use these. troops probably didnt remove these very often.

      Well they suck to put on and take off

      There was that problem with putties too (although to a lesser extent). It was thought to be one of the reasons why the British were more prone to trench foot than the Germans in WW1. Jackboots being far easier to take on and off making changing socks less of s pain compared to low boots and putties.

    I’m here in the good old USA, and I would agree that these suck from a living history buff standpoint! While I love the look, they are the most irritating WWII garments at least for American uniforms, that I’ve ever used. The double buckles are my favorites as with most reenact-ors. But I did not know how to tie them off at the end, so thank you for that! There’s not
    much info I’ve found on how to tie them.

    Got Miles technology repros, one eyelet missing at the top, also part of hooks mangled. Other wise I still use them rubbed candle wax over the stitching and metal parts to help them from any deterioration. Good video thanks.

    Awesome stuff cool vid. They look like a giant pain in the ass but can see the utility maybe some modern manufacturing with elastic and fixed loops would make them a lot more practical.

  • @thegijones9062
    @thegijones9062 Před 2 lety +1

    They are a pain to put on but I always liked the way they looked especially with the trousers sorta bloused over them, like in original photos.

  • @Will-bo7kg
    @Will-bo7kg Před 2 lety +1

    To me it would make more sense to use a buckle closure rather than laced. Them being a lot simpler to use just as adaptable.
    The only advantage I can think of for laces would be the ease of manufacture and logistics but that doesn't count for much when people don't want to wear them.

      I bought a pair of Sturm Mil-tec leggings size 4 for $20 on Ebay and I'll try them out more once I get the right type of low boots in my size. My shoe size is 14 Which I had to go to size 15 for my original unissued double buckles which I got dirt cheap.

    • @DevinK
      @DevinK  Před 29 dny

      Their purpose was to provide ankle support and protection for the lower legs. They were cheaper and more breathable than making taller leather boots. They also kept water and debris out of your boots.
