Over on this side of the pond, we pronounce the shell “a-buh-lone-ee”, and the oval shells are lovely. When I was young (I’m in my 70’s), we would find lots of the shells along the California shores. Plus, we loved eating abalone “steaks”. They were delicious! They virtually disappeared in the wild.

More than once I thought I saw garlic mustard growing. It's an invasive plant here in the States, and I just pulled most of it up out of my yard this morning. My town - near Boston - has an official 'pull up the garlic mustard' program to save native plants.

The black bottle stopper seems made from a material called Ebonite. It was invented by Charles Goodyear in 1844 and replaced widely-used wooden bottle stoppers, which tended to soak up liquids and caused many bottles to explode.

36:50 I wonder if it is smokey quartz? That was popular in the Art Deco era. Other than that, I wonder if it was leaded and the heat from the tip burning has discolored it? Could also be (rare) scapolite (although I don’t think it is due to the clarity). Take it in to an antique dealer.

I think, but don't quote me, the stopper has a lot of lead in it.
Glass like that was used in industrial glass to make it more magnetically and electrically inert making it safer to store certain chemicals.
But I could be wrong 😊

Hello Fleur and Kate. The leaf shaped beauty you found Kate, isn't Abalone. Abalone is a petrol blue green pink colour. Part of a shells layers. The very pretty leaf you found, was by the looks of it, a mother of pearl layer, as it looked white. It was such a lovely find, perfect in the surroundings it was found in. Nature makes everything better. How beautiful the dump looked. Green mosses, the dreaded nettles and those beautiful wild strawberries. Along with the trees... and big fat bumble bees looking for places to nest or feed. Beautiful.
I loved the stoneware items. They will be put to such good use in your dreamed about kitchen Kate. I hope when that day comes, you will show us your kitchen. 😊
A very enjoyable lark. Thank you for taking us along. X

Could it be marble? The ‘swirl’ made me think it might be a natural stone, and perhaps they are rare because they were made from scrap from larger projects? Just a guess! Mother of pearl is from nacre, a protective layer from a mollusk such as abolone or oyster shell its the first inner layer.
a pearl is also nacre, Pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a bit of food, a grain of sand, bacteria, or even a piece of the mollusk's mantle becomes trapped in the mollusk. And the nacre part of shell grows around it, to protect the freshwater mussels or marrine oysters.
Abalone shell is a gastropod mollusk, and all parts are used commercially.

Larking with the nightingale! A lovely little wander in a lovely little forest, such fun finds too, especially the mother of pearl leaf. I think perhaps it's one half of a dress buckle. Sherd story was a wild ride! And so odd to run a tea room for an 'above average' customer, over a butchers!? Which in the 1880s was quite a grotesque scene...

Could the grey stopper be made of Soapstone ! It was a stone used for Many
purposes in the 19 century. Often Soapstone kitchen sinks were preferred by homeowners.
