- Andy Taylor on Recovering From Pop, David Bowie’s Death, & Duran Duran’s Lost Reportage LP
Andy Talor joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Man’s A Wolf To Man, his first solo album of original material in 36 years. The former Duran Duran guitarist talks about how he first considered a Power Station reunion before deciding to focus on himself, how his songwriting is recovering from a lifetime in pop, that David Bowie’s death had a major impact on his decision to return, and his thoughts on channeling music versus copying it. Taylor also draws the parallel of this new set to the politically charged lost Duran Duran album “Reportage,” simultaneously giving us the history of how the label held the band back from progressing artistically while also highlighting the new material that considers at the war in Ukraine, Brexit, and the lack of protest songs in pop while the likes of Jason Aldean and Anthony Oliver fill that spot in country music.

Thank you for watching! If you liked it, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! I’m posting three new interviews every week!
Great to hear such humanist views from Andy - thank you Kyle Meredith for allowing Andy to express his views, and then to publish them on CZcams. We really need to re-examine and live the principles of 'The Enlightenment' - respect for rationality and for each other in al;l our differences.
Omg!! I love this man!!! He is not only an amazing musician but his thoughts and his feelings on things are just so on point!!! ❤ YES!! Listen to him!!
Have loved him for 40 years-- love him still. ❤
This new album suckerpunched me. I was not ready for the full frontal assault on my feels. It is unbelievable. Magical.
It's absolutely brilliant. The heaviness of it is the best part. This is his masterpiece, from the songwriting, mixing, to the production, I just wish more people would hear it, and sadly they won't.
@lorenmorgan1931 Glad I'm not the one seeing it. Brilliant is a good description. Cheers, 🤙🙏
@@TheChadTIIt's extremely rare these days to get a good new release in our hands. This one, and Peter Gabriels (up and coming released entirely as two mixes, and singles during moon phases) are about the best things I have heard in a long while. They both share a slight bit of modern while keeping the song writing to the standards that has made ageless music for the last 50 years.
@lorenmorgan1931 I'm liking I/O (what we have have of it) more than Up as it stands. 3 more tracks left I think (heard it was 11 total)
Such an incredible interview. Man's A Wolf To Man is a phenomenal album. Completely blown away by all of those songs.
My 2nd time seeing it
Amazing interview! No offense to Duran Duran, but he is way ahead of them! Home run interview!
Mr Andy , I hope you are doing well. I think about you everyday sinceI heard about your health issues. I've been a D D fan for 30 years. I love all you guys !
As a teenager, I was not so much into Andy as a part of Duran. Now I know that I was simply not informed or simply ignorant… Andy! You rock!
Right?! Mad respect for Andy.
Thank you Kyle for having Andy Taylor on!! I so miss his creativity with Duran but love his solo work. I learned so much from his interview, it was so lovely to not be alone in regards to everything that has/is going on. I love that Andy was so open & candid on so many topics that I agree with. Enough is enough!! We all need to help each other instead of against each other🙏🙏👍👍💖💖
Andy is spot on!! No fighting or dying for another man’s ideology!
Thank you for letting him talk, he's a very nice guy 👍
Andy is seriously underrated as a guitarist - the way he found his place in Duran's material is quite some feat - Duran with Andy is so original - kind of like Manzanera & Roxy Music. So subtle, yet powerful without sounding "Rock". It's such a fine line to balance and Andy did it. Very influential within the band context. Rio is an absolute masterpiece in guitar subtlety.
Great point. That balance is something a lot of people are not aware of until it’s done poorly…and Andy was always on point. Years ago I read another comment along these lines that stated “No one is better at playing guitar along with keyboards than Andy Taylor”. As a non musician I never thought about that and now I have a greater appreciation for Andy’s unique talent and musical contributions
Man’s a wolf to man is just amazing record.
Andy just summned up the record industry , thts why he left duran . Great interview
This is one of the most honest, interesting, informative and insightfully honest interviews I’ve seen and heard in years. Andy hits the nail right on the head and thanks for letting him talk. Just wow! The album is great and Wolf is a wolf to Man is a wolf to man is just fantastic. I love the whole album and it was Radio 2s Album of the week. It should go viral. Here’s hoping.
Great interview...Andy is a legend 😊
NICE!! WOW he has a lot going on in his head. He is paying close attention to politics. Thanks for letting him talk. ❤
Andy I agree, great excellent conversation, I hope all is good in your life!
Love AndyT
My favourite duran member
Always will be.
AndyT rocked that band when hes involved.
Still love the boys
But always better with AndyT.
Hope your doing well boss
🙏
👍👍
By the way
AndyT's album is excellent I love it
Go check it out people.
He is 100% right. Please watch this. Thank you.
What an amazing interview. Thank you for letting Andy talk!! He’s an amazing musician and an amazing man. ❤
Andy has a fun spirit, it has always come through in interviews.
Totally 🙂
Simon was the (purposefully) Dorky goofball & Andy was the hyperactive, mischievous 1.
Loved them all, but those 2 cracked me up! 😂
Really good interview...i want Reportage!! I hope someone puts it out, maybe BMG?? AT is right on target with everything...i do wonder how he hooked up with Aussie legend Tina Arena tho...they duet on his record & he plays guitar all over her new album Love Saves...
A very honest and real interview.
We want more talk from Andy. Cheers from Lisbon Andy, you still a big influence on me as a player. Wishing you the best and Thank for the Music it made my life much better.
love it
Brilliant interview Andy. Its great to see a musician so well informed and even more importantly willing to speak their mind. The new album is amazing, lots of influence to call on, Pink Floyd, Sound Garden, Bowie, hopefully you can get back with the rest of Duran and finish Reportage. Would love to hear Criminals In The capital!
Absolute Brilliant! A true gentleman that is willing to express his knowledge of " how it used to be and what can we do to get it back, even if it's different!" Spent the day driving around and had this album playing all day long!!!!
Great interview, thank you for letting him speak his mind, unhindered , the quality of a good interviewer
I hate to hear young artists ramble, I love hearing seasoned artists tell their stories uninterrupted.
This was just fantastic, I was really intrigued with what Andy said about Duran Duran staying with the Waiting For The Nightboat, New Religion style, that I wholeheartedly agree with, Duran Duran could have built an even bigger fan base than they already have staying true to that vision of the sound, those songs STILL resonate with me lyrically and sonically til this day. I would kill to listen to Reportage.
Oh my goodness! Andy, Thank you for speaking truth. God bless you! 🙏🏼
I listen the full album and it's a great record. Not very fan of the album cover but the songs are so good....
"I thought we should've went more down the Night boat and New Religion side of the band"
I've been saying this since Seven And The Raged Tiger came out. Always thought Duran Duran should put out a guitar heavy rocker album - Simon has the voice for it.
Great interview. This went deep. Nice to see Andy’s broad perspective. At first I wanted to hear about music but then the conversation expanded and developed. I like the format you used. You let him run free and get it off his chest. I appreciate that. I’ll definitely check out more of your videos.
Agree with every word andy❤
he's great. the album's great.
I always thought they could have and tried to make albums in the direction of Pink Floyd and he confirms it. I think they should do this and have him on the album and if they want Dominic on it too just fine but just do it.
Concordo com tudo que andy falou eu te amo muito andy❤❤❤
🌠Good One Guys !
love the depeche poster
MP Andy!!
I seem to remember Simon pontificating about Ukraine on stage at festivals this year - direct odds with Andy. Love Andy - the real deal.
Different characters. Lebon will always play to the crowd
So what? When is giving supt to ppl/ nation a bad thing when they've had land stolen & ppl killed unjustly?
Not to mention, Simon's usu described as an authentic, fun & kind sweetheart. He may be an appeaser, but it's for things he cares about.
& on this issue, they both care about the ppl getting killed; they just perceive the situation differently.
Even musicians fr/ varying genres & generations he's met talk fondly of him, leading to DD & SLB performing with them after mtg (both in Studio, or by doing songs together at each other's live shows).
It's also reflected in how he lives; as he extended his house in order for his family to live there, where he helps w/ taking care of everyone: all 3 of his adult girls, along w/ grandchildren.
Regardless, they DD/AT just finished working an album together as they all still luv each other like brothers/mates; & SLB was utterly heartbroken when learning of Andy's incurable Big C-Diag.
It must be horrible having already lost 2 best friends:
*David Miles (in 80s), who inspired a trilogy of songs grieving him, including "Ordinary World" &
*Michael Hutchence of INXS (in 90s) - who Simon also wrote a song for (on the "Medazzaland" album called: "Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For")…
Anyway, sry for lng response, but I'm a conversationalist speaker (including in type/txt) whose bad at being concise.🤷♀️
dont like duran dedicating ordinary world to the ukraine ,andy is right on with his points of view.
ANDY!!!!!1
19:14 Thank you so much Andy. 🙏( t. Actual nutter 😅)
I thought it was interesting what Andy had to say. Though not always specific I get where he is coming from.
My unsolicited assessment of Andy's escape from the 3D is currently at... A little under 50%. Oh he's fucking getting out (!) but he's currently mid escape. (In my amatuer professional opinion) 😅
I honestly think durans best songs were s result of andy or warren. They dont seem to have that quality without them. Andy was as much a cocaine head as john back then. He once said he was snorting half of Peru. He rambled here at at times, making little sense. He makes me think of the anarchists of the punk era which was his childhood.
I can see how his forthright nature could rub the other four guys the wrong way. He is very much the wild boy of the group.
But back when the others were starting and bluffing with their musicianship, he was already a seasoned veteran.
He and Nick both have very strong personalities, and Andy was not going to put up with Nick’s domineering.
All the reasons why I have always loved Andy is right here. I am so glad he's doing well! I absolutely love him!
Game on John Taylor....
Why doesn't john speak to Andy?
24:31 Whoah whoah whoa Dammit Andy hide your power level.😅
Duran are certainly missing something since they've not had an official guitarist.
Both Warren and Andy certainly added significant contribution to the style of the band!
He looks like Lucio Fulci....
John’s reps gave a cold response? Am guessing the reps mentioned it to John and he said “No”. That’s BS
John and Andy are not on speaking terms?
Poor dude had to leave DD because of creative differences way too soon ...well duh. After DD's first or second album and Nile Rogers, their style changed to cheese. Andy Taylor wasn't having any of that. He's the only DD member that I don't feel was ever a liar and a sell out. If fans (esp lady fans) knew what I NOW realize about the true reason for such terrible inventory, some of the member's lifestyles, and their view of other westerners (i.e. Americans ... for cash cows esp) and well Asians....... they'd be banned by, maybe not all, but by many venue owners STAT. It's a bit late, they've already made their money and like David Gehan of DP...they're letting loose of their true colors. Some who would read this comment may get it, most probably won't. But I said what I said and good on AT for not changing his true colors.
In regards to today's American "Pop Stars" lack of protest songs, they won't protest our current politician's. There were plenty of protest songs during the Bush and Trump years but none would call out Obama or what Biden's administration has been doing for the last 2 1/2 years. Our economy and inflation is out of control, shoplifting and other crimes are ridiculous and our energy costs are unaffordable. The music and entertainment industry must have a total ban on musicians and celebrities speaking out on our unstable and crumbling situation here and around the world.
Well that was a rollercoaster. Too many opinions. Totally off topic. 36 minute rant.
Well, let's be thankful he's still here to rant, eh?
You have to know how to keep up....My mind works like that sometimes....
Sad to hear his wildly misinformed comments on Ukraine. He blames the US, craps on Zelensky and not a word about Putin. Putin is the only person who deserves blame for whats happening there. I love Andy's music but these are shameful comments and really lower my opinion of him as far as caring what he has to say. Sad.
Putin is never to be praised, is definitely a dictator and Andy called him one.
Do me and yourself a favour and listen to what a respected man like Jeffrey Sachs has to say about the US treatment of Russia since Gorbachev.
"What JFK tried to do before his assassination w/Jeffrey Sachs." 34:40 mark.
Above all, can we put aside the attitude that only the right or the far left have a non-mainstream (also fully western) take on this war?
Both countries are high in corruption. Ukraine is basically Russia-Lite, they just serve the west now.
We are in the shit. .andy is absolutely right
Great man. Shame that it sounds like, apart from Roger - The other members of Duran don’t get along with him.
