What incredible work - I hope these traditional arts never die out because there is something beautiful about crafts that have the literal marks of the artisan imbued in them.
As bleak as the future can look for culture like this, in theory we're going to automate everything and there won't be any normal jobs. My hope is if that happens we could switch to a solid universal basic income structure and then encourage people to spend more time on arts and hobbies. Economics are a complicated nightmare so I'm not sure how it would work but I'd love to see a culture that encourages doing stuff like this. Right now many are turned off just because they know it isn't a safe job and a degree or their parents wouldn't want them to try anything artistic. Takes a lot of practice to learn niche skills like this and many people don't think to because they need to get a steady 9-5

Thy artisan themselves have added up those costs to determine that they have supplied the equivalent of 10 years salary to bring their crafts to you, my guess is that they have already figured out that they are worth far more than whatever pittance you'd offer them and would likely tell you to "go ahead and buy whatever you can at Walmart. I'll sell my crafts to people who, not only can afford to purchase their item, but can understand the value of what I create _for_ them and how much I went through to bring it _to_ them. I find this very valuable because of the time, energy, precision, thoughts, skill patience, exhaustion and expertise put into it. If it were to be made by a machine in 10 mins I'd not buy this for much money.
I wasn't all that impressed with how it looked until i got to the end where everything sits on the same plane so the bits of shell aren't raised, impressed with the skill but i didn't quite see the vision until then. But man, i shouldn't have doubted, it turned out very pretty!

Since lacquer is a naturally occurring ingredient, the process is time-consuming. It takes one day for the lacquer to dry completely. Failure of one process will result in the loss of 3-5 days. Some people will find $500 too much. The price of this product includes the cost to keep the technology, beauty and traditional craft alive.
I have a few Korean clients who have VERY large furniture pieces completely covered in super ornate mother of pearl. The intricate detail is so beautiful to just stare at. 10k+ 50 years ago for a dresser….
