- Gráinne Ní Mháille or Gráinne O'Mháille known as
Grace O’Malley in English was raised aboard her father’s ships. Her charisma then won her the loyalty of her husband’s men. Together they traded and marauded the rouged west coast of Ireland. They feuded with other clans until the English came to take over the nation. Gráinne and her English nemesis nearly destroyed each other until she went over his head and met directly with Queen Elizabeth I to get a royal sanctioned piracy license.

Man, giving birth DURING a battle and then getting up right after and going out to fight… I can see why she was extra protective of that kid.
Trans people take note; this is a real woman!
Absolute Madlass.
How has her story not yet been adapted for film or TV? i would gladly watch a good show about her in Netflix or HBO
Same here
Yesssss!
There was a broadway show based on her life a while ago - the pirate queen). It wasn’t that good, but it did introduce me to this fascinating woman! (And did have a few beautiful songs)
I'd love to see it too. It's a pity she is virtually unheard of.
It would make a great series like 'The Crown' showing her as a young woman, as an older mother and as a crone. Featuring Eliz I and a lot of other people from the era. It would be lush.
I read a book about her when I was 17, they called her Grainnuaile in the book and made her sound pretty badass. From my understanding she only joined the battle after she gave birth because she was so frustrated from hearing her soldiers struggle without her leadership that she went into a flying rage at them for not being about to do it without her.
I mean ANYONE(women or no)WOULD, it means that SHE carried the team essentially, ik it's a stereotype to have a "star player" but it's actually a downgrade as without that player, your screwed
This is so freaking cool. Makes me wonder how many more stories of badass women in the past have been buried by the history written by men.
There are wonderful stories of smart women who didn't conform or resisted their circumstances through the ages and throughout the world, their stories have indeed been suppressed by male writers of history for fear of women getting above their station😢. The Internet has been great for allowing us to discover what would be suppressed or rewritten.
She definitely needs her own mini series. I can’t say that I agree with all of her tactics, but I think she is definitely somebody we could all learn from.
Aw Lindsay I remember requesting this a couple of years ago! Thank you so much for taking an interest in Irish history! There’s a hotel in Galway that Grainne used to own too, the castle is called the Abbeyglen and they still lay out a dinner for her at her own table every night same as Howth😊
It's great, right!? And now I know what the "O" in your surname denotes... learn something new everyday!
I love this story, just as I love the Irish so very much. I hope that I can visit Ireland someday and experience the majestic beauty of Erin for myself!
it was a really wise move from elizabeth the I to make Grainne Ni Mhaille her ally instead of her enemy tbh 👍🏻
When I was in junior high, over 20 years ago, I was obsessed with Grace O'Malley. I did my big World History presentation on her, and she and Boudicca have been close to my heart ever since. I'm so glad her story is still being told today.
My Irish ancestors are from the Mayo area. It was fascinating to learn about Grainne Ni Mhaille. I had never heard about her before. Thanks Lindsay!
As are mine, family lore says I am related to the Pirate Queen
Me too!! An O’Malley here :)
Irish ladies have such beautiful names. There is an Irish singer who was born Eithne Padraigin Ni Bhraonain. She is better known by her Anglicised first name, "Enya". I loved her song, "Orinoco Flow".
Now THIS lady... THIS lady is badass.
She's amazing. Thank you for sharing her story.
I literally can't!! Just when I think this channel can't get better 🥰
What a badass! Why isn't her story a movie or series?
there's a musical
Good question. There needs to be a movie or TV series for Grace O' Malley.
it reminds me of the disney Brave movie, with princess Merida
Perfectly timed as a 17th birthday gift, thank you Lindsay⚘️
Happy Birthday Manuela
17th🎈🎈🎂🎈🎈
Thank you guys🌹
Happy late birthday
Happy Belated Birthday!
I'm Irish and this woman makes me proud to be Irish, I'm also an O'Flaherty so it was interesting for me to find out about.
So amazing. If anyone wants more pirate queen (albiet fictional) I'd recommend the book The adventures of amina al sirafi by shannon chakraborty. Although very different in setting i just love the fullness of the women's lives. Their pirate and family life both make them badasses.
Sounds cool thanks for the rec!
Fascinating. My mum was Irish so it’s great to hear anything about Irish history. 🙂
Yeah, i'm irish and find irish history truly fascinating, too
I love how her and Queen Elizabeth connected.
Hail to the one TRUE pirate queen, Grace O'Malley!
WHERE IS THR TV SHOW ABOUT HER LIFE. I was laughing with delight to learn about her. Thank you so much for making these videos and helping people learn about amazing history!!
Wouldn't that be great.
Back in the late '70s, Bertrice Small wrote a series of books based on Grace. It was called 'Skye O'Malley'. Of course it was quite fictionalized, but very entertaining. I must say that was probably my favorite book for the last 40 years. I think I need to re-read it.
I am the fourth generation in my family to read Bertrice Small’s books, and if I’m being honest, Skye is my favorite of all of her heroines!
Fun fact on that though! The main reason Bertrice created Skye is that she originally wanted to write a novel based on Grace, but found that Grace didn’t go much beyond Ireland, and Bertrice wanted to write something that would span into the Middle East & England for an extended amount of time - and also France! So she created Skye instead.
Her story should definitely be turned into a movie or TV series
Read Skye O'Malley by Beatrice Small. It's a series.
I agree
So excited to see this one! After diving in to our family ancestry we found out that we are descends of Grace on my fathers side. My Great Grandma was an O’Malley🍀
I’m related to Thomas O’Malley it’s so cool!!
@@maplesyrup6052 The alley cat?
@@maddie8983 yup lmao! I was wondering if anyone would catch it
My O'Neal ancestors come from the Isle of man so proud of my Irish lineage thank you for this story! It's an English country in the Irish sea so my mom and dad's lineage comes from there that's what I mean.
"Tell me you're American without telling me you're American"
Isle of Man is not Irish
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 'kin ell
English!
Wonderful story, fabulously told. Thank you. I will gladly raise a glass to this Queen! 🍻
Powerful lady is an understatement.
“Richard, I dismiss you.”
Wow! Grace o' Malley was a very impressive pirate queen! ❤👑❤ What I found the most impressive is the fact that she gave birth in battle and then just headed back into battle as if nothing had happened and the fact that she went to go see Queen Elizabeth I directly. And you know you're respectable when even the Queen of England is impressed by you. And I can't help but find it fitting that the two queens passed away in the same year. Queen Grace is another perfect example of a woman who commands respect. 💕
This is the first time hearing about Grace O Malley. Why don't you hear more about her?
probably because shes a women in history.
Because she was Irish.
I’ve never heard of her. Fascinating. Thanks.
I'm so glad you made a video about her! I spent years trying to figure out my family history, and I'm so happy to find out that one of my ancestors was a badass pirate ❤
Same here, my last name is O'Malley and I was always taught about her from my family they always said she's great grandma 😂
I’ve read a bit about her and this video is laid out so well. Love her. Thank you for sharing!
Her descendants are still alive and have noble titles and are the marquesses of Sligo although these titles do not have any power in the republic of Ireland. And the statue is a bronze casting of a statue made by the brother in law of the 11th marquess. She was buried in the family tomb on Clare island. We probably would've known more about her but the O'Malley dynasty family book has been lost and so much of what we know is from English sources and Irish folk tales. Many of the drawings in the video depict what Irish people traditional would have worn in the 16th century before and during the reign of Henry the 8th who in fact banned the wearing of Irish dress.
Omg! Your channel is absolutely terrific!!!
New suscribe here, cheers from Chile, 🇨🇱.
My English is not good but understanding your pronunciation is very easy for me, so thank you so much, I'm a fan of Tudor and Marie Antoniette 😅
Wonderful video!!! ☘️ Just a note on the pronunciation of Gráinnes surname, the letters M+H together make a “V” sound as we don’t have a letter V in Irish and the “Á” makes an “aw” sound. The “Í” in Ní makes an “eee”sound so altogether Gráinne Ní Mháille is pronounced as “Grawnya Knee- Vawlia” (depending on region of Ireland and dialects etc)
Scrolled through to make sure someone mentioned this and was happy to see someone did.❤️
My family visited Westport where her ancestors lived. The basement of the manor house as a section that was supposedly the dungeon of her castle. It was quite eerie in there and cold. I could believe it was true.
As someone who 'supposedly ' has family ties to this woman it is absolutely WILD to hear stories about her and probably explains my fascination witg one piece 😂
I really appreciate most of the paintings of beautiful , regal looking red haired women depicting Grace. Thank you for this interesting bit of history.
I saw the play. Her story is amazing.
Uhh I just love this channel. I never though I would get excited for history, yet here I am. Keep up the amazing work Lindsay. 👍🏾💕😊
Love your videos!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
Hail Granuille; the Pirate Queen!
Loved this one thank you!
This was very interesting. Thank you for posting the video.
My last name is O’Malley and regardless of relation or not Grace has always inspired me 😊

Wow, what an amazing woman!
This should be a tv show, what an insane story.
Amazing, inspirational woman! 👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💚💚🇮🇪🇮🇪
Fascinating video
Your vids are so thorough. 70 years of Piracy!!! Amazing
ahhh, could you talk about a great woman in Brazilian history? such as Chica Da Silva, Maria Tomásia Figueira Lima, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Maria Quitéria and others.
Please.
Ohhhh Xica. I remember the telenovela about her wayyy back in the day❤
Very interesting! Enjoyed every moment!
Grace is surly a role model!
This was awesome!
My mother named her one-eyed rescue shih tzu Grace after her. 💚
DITO MY CAT COS WHEN SHE WAS A RESCUE BABY SHE WAS SUCH AFIGHTER AGAINST ALL THE ODDS, NOW SHE IS A 17LB MAINECOON CROSS AND WILL BE 15 AT XMAS, SHE STILL CARRIES ON LIKE A BADASS PIRATE QUEEN!
Sounds like the heroine Skye O'Malley from Beatrice Small's book titled the same name.
Thank youuu !!!
She was a badass❤ I enjoyed learning about her
My grandmother, who is from Ireland, is descended from Grace :) They are all from County Mayo on her side as well! Her maternal side, to be sure.
Oh I've been waiting for you to do an Irish one Lindsey
Xxx
Very interesting!’ Thanks!!
DISNEY NEEDS TO GIVE ME MY IRISH PIRATE *QUEEN* MOVIE ASAP!!!! 😍🥰
Yes 😍
This was wonderful to watch! Many greetings from Grainne’s neighbour county, Limerick!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, not another Hugh de Lacy! That was a shocker. I didn't know that about her. Really good details about her that was captured. Great video!
OH MY GOODNESS I CANT BELIEVE I DIDN'T SEE THIS INSTANTLY I LOVE HER!!!!!!
Irish Pirates: holy sh*t these Algerian dudes are kicking our arse!
Queen Grainne: **hold my baby**
She was my great great great great.... you get the picture...grandmother! My Dad is from the Gaeltacht and we learn our entire family line by heart and she is my direct relative! Thought that was really cool!
I hope "Our Flag Means Death," pays tribute to her in the show!!!
Grace's first husband was the basis for Skye's first husband in the series; his name was the same and his personality was as well; it was a great series and there were even books about one of her daughters and granddaughters, and one of her brothers as well.
5:57 had me rolling 😭😭
We really need a Lindsay Holiday out of context after this
I am related to her this is my first look into her story and wow I'm amazed. Thank you for sharing this. My maiden name is Maggie O'Malley
Love the story

Ok I'm so annoyed I didn't know about her sooner what amazing women
My kind of Disney princess. 😊
Just a comment to say Lindsay was shouted out on Princess Weekes latest video (on bridgerton). I love when my fave CZcamsrs love each other!
Yesh!!!! She was a BADASS.
❤ one of my favorites
Wow! Thoroughly enjoyed this story…thank you for sharing 🤗
Gráinne Ní Mháille would be pronounced Grawn-ya Knee Vawl-ya/ Wallya
The Vawlya/Wallya is dependent on accent so either is fine.
Thanks for another vid
God bless! Prayer here when wanted loves ❤
Could you do one on the O'Neills?
Just one note on the pronunciation, it should be like Grawnya knee Vawl-ya
I am named after her!
Thats, Awesome! One of my best friends' middle names is after her!
Wow!
Wow! What an amazing woman!
Proud to be Irish! 🍀
She reminds me of Merida from Disney Pixar’s “Brave”. Instead of archery it’s seafaring.
She was a beast she even butched the english n went in front of the queen n wouldin neal coz no one was here king or queen irish in a bottle proper savage love u grace u did our country proud🇮🇪🇮🇪
I was named after this Bamf! (Maube I should start using Grainne instead though?)
I love the artwork with flowers being weapons! Are they really related to Grace, or are they generic?
That was so cool to learn! I also liked that Queen Elizabeth gave her the respect she deserved when they met.
Side note: Is Captain Sara Fortune from League of Legends inspired by her?
except Elizabeth screwed her over.
Have you ever done a video on Margaret Plantagenet Pole, the daughter of George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence and eventually the Countess of Salisbury?
L love your voice
