  • Here’s part 1 of a dive into the button jar. This one covers metal and black glass antique buttons and talks about various sub-types, what buyers are looking for, and ways to lot them for sale on eBay, etsy or other platforms.

    I just wish you had spoken about prices. I understand. If I am buying from an expert I pay more because the information is trustworthy. So I understand the button you can get 20 bucks for I might have to settle for 10 dollars cause I wont describe it with the detail that you can.
    But I am really unclear about cricket cage? But so informative. Thanks

      Hi Michele. This video just wasn't really about prices, I guess, it was about how to tell what's what. If I recall correctly, there was nothing in those bins that was super spectacular rare or anything. My strategy for pricing stuff like that is to make lots (unless there's something very specific that I think a button collector might be looking for to use in a card for a competition - like a certain bit of specific imagery, or combination of materials). The lots will vary from 2-5 buttons for the more interesting ones to a big handful for the more common ones. I try to group them by theme - so, perhaps Plaid Vegetable Ivory designs or Victorian Metal Flower Buttons or something like that. Things that are even less collected, I'll do in bigger lots, like fabric-covered buttons. THEN, there are more special, fancier buttons (that I didn't really include here) that I price and sell individually and that can range from $20 up. The most expensive button I have in my store at the moment is about $200, but certainly people sell much pricier ones.
      Cricket cages are when there's a raised filagree front that you can see through to the inside back of the button - which usually has some reflective metal on it to make it sparkle in the light.
      Hope that helps a little. I'll try to do more with button pricing at some point!

    Great and informative video. Thanks for sharing. If you have multiples of the same button and you want to sell them in groups, do you sell them in sets of 2, 4, 6 or 8?

    • @AnnieEbaySchool
      @AnnieEbaySchool  Před 3 lety +2

      I know this is an annoying answer, but… it depends. I'll make lots of 3-5 buttons for things that are bigger and nicer, but not quite interesting enough to go on their own. Or for things where there's one nice one and a few "supporting characters" which might make it seem like you're getting more for your money. Then, I'll make lots of more - maybe 8-20 for other's that are perhaps old and nice but plain. For example, I just had an offer on a lot of mother of pearl (shell) buttons where there are I think about 15 buttons, and they're all smallish and plainish, but interesting shapes and old. Any button that's especially nice or unusual, I'll sell on it's own, though the prices can range quite a bit.
      I would look at what are people are doing in terms of how they're lotting (or not) the kinds of buttons you have. I have videos coming up on some other vintage fancy button types too, for more ideas. Thanks!

    Hi Annie! I'm loving your videos. Do you have any tips on where to find buttons? It seems like the only button lots I can find anymore for a decent price at estate sales, yard sales or auctions are the very common, mostly no-value buttons, as if they've all already been picked through by dealers or collectors.

    • @AnnieEbaySchool
      @AnnieEbaySchool  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, the majority of buttons one comes across are just "Grandma's button jar" kind of situations at estate sales and so forth where there's nothing too exciting. I think I've found the best things at:
      1. in-person auctions that advertise having large button collections (then it's competitive)
      2. in-person auctions that are general estate stuff where there happens to be one collection of buttons amongst all the furniture and books and knicknacks and so forth, usually on cards, from a deceased button collector who did button shows) - then you can often get a good deal because unless you have bad luck, people aren't necessarily there for buttons
      3. estate sales of people who were button collectors, serious sewers or crafters
      4. big antiques fairs (like Brimfield) where they can be expensive, but you can sometimes get deals
      5. antique co-op type shops with lots of stuff that dealers don't necessarily research in depth - not common, but it happens, especially more in rural areas
      6. online auctions when sold in bulk or bulk-ish
      Definitely look for cards that were put together by button collectors.
      There are also button shows and meetups (National Button Society related), but I've not been to one.
      I also think if you're looking specifically for military buttons, there are other sources besides these, but that's not really my area of expertise.
      But yeah, it's very hit or miss... I usually just *happen* on them, and not all that often.I definitely keep an eye out for any auction previews or estate sales that mention or show buttons.
      Wish I could give you a better secret, but I don't know one. 😦

    I am tring to figure out how much i should charge for my buttons. Tweaking through your collection does me no good, if you cannot provide their value or, at least rouugh estimates... On individual buttons an lots

    If I sent you a picture of a button would you be able to tell me anything about it.
