i saw Moe demonstrate his skills three different times, and was totally in awe. Someone from the audience asked Moe to hook or slice and bring the ball back to the fairway. Moe said "why would I do that, when I can hit straight down the middle of the fairway to begin with".
I know a guy who knew Moe. He said when he was a kid, he and other kids would stand out on the driving range with a baseball glove. Moe would tell them to hold the glove in the air and not move. Moe would then hit ball after ball into the glove on the fly. Said it was the most amazing thing he’s EVER seen done with a golf club.

Although the easy pin location and backstop seemed to exaggerate Moe's accuracy....The man is a savant. He read what his eyes saw. He saw the backstop so he kept hitting it to the same distance and used the backstop. Why change the distance when the ball ends up 3 feet from the hole?

Ok: So I have been playing for about 50 years. Just yesterday, I gave this a real try, the one plane idea. I stretched my arms and tried to get myself in a similar position to Moe's at address. I worked at it for about an hour on the range and then shot even par 36 on our front nine with missing 5 putts inside of 10 feet. Seriously never hit the ball so straight. I was so impressed I continued and hit another 200 balls at the range. At 64 years young, the game is beginning again.
Mark: I have known of Moe all my life. Followed him actually at the 1966 Open at Shaughnessy. I have a very close friend who played with him on the Canadian Tour many years ago. Hoping the weather warms a little today as can't wait to get out there again.
I did a rough count 34 balls hit 34 on the green 25 within 8 feet (76%) 19 within 5 feet (56%) The ball flight he takes is also much harder then hitting a conventional wedge shot, he is hitting it much lower. It's purely based on feel.

I have been studying Moe for 12-yrs and just noticed that he said in Kirk Junge's video, at a private Natural Instructors clinic in Florida during 2000, that he got his swing from Manuel de la Torre's father, Angel, Manuel and Edward Jones. Correction: on the second name, it was Ernest Jones not Edward Jones. Ernest was from the UK and lost his right leg, below the knee during a battle, in 1915, as a soldier. He spent four months in the hospital, then went to the golf course on crutches and shot 83. He was totally amazed at his own accomplishment !!! (Note that Moe wasn't born until 1929). A short while after, Ernest was playing par 72 golf, once again. He was a good player, a golf club maker and then a teacher. He says everyone's swing will be slightly different but to a) "swing the clubhead", b) "hit the ball past the head" and the brain will figure out the body / muscle mechanics to hit the ball, similar to how we all use a hammer to hit a nail. Just like Sir Walter Thompson thought, in 1887, Ernest said, "...we don't need to know how every component in our body or muscles work to use them efficiently." As I understand his method, It is a 'club / tool based' concept rather than a 'body, bone / muscle based' concept. Absolutely fascinating to me....I have a lot more to learn, now....
donjvalley "club / tool based concept" I think is spot on. I think the human body/mind is built for using tools. Humans take to tools like fish to water IMHO.

Moe only played in 1 senior event , he finished 3rd. He wouldn't fly therefore he could have only played a shortened schedule. He was amazing, as I tell people , it is not how straight he hit it, it's how he never hit it crooked.
David Coley I'm studying it. My goal is to work towards incorporating every principle of his swing that I like into my swing. Currently I'm working on understanding how his weight transfer worked. I thought it was all about keeping the right heel on the ground as long as possible but I discovered that the weight must be going towards the target while doing so. After I'm comfortable with my weight transfer I plan to study his grip. I'm trying to emulate his swing because one day I tried his way of hitting the golf ball and fell deeply in love with results.

Moe is an absolute legend. Even at his old age he could still drive 300 yards straight as an arrow. In his prime he would call his distance and the ball would go exactly that. Nobody else is better than Moe Norman, the goat of golf.

Dr Jones Look at the shot hit at 3:22. It is rolling forward then slows and rolls backwards 5 feet! Look again st 4:45, the green must be incredibly sloped back to front. If he lands then anywhere within 25 feet of the hole, the heavily sloped green automatically brings it to within 10 feet. Most tour pros can hit a land a ball within 25 feet from 70ish yards, calling him the best ballstrikier of all time is hilarious.

Pretty impressive I've been playing for a long time and I never heard of Moe Norman just ran across him on you tube. I seen lot post here talking out of there butt's.With the clubs and golf ball's they had back then and being in his age not many people could do this shot I promise you he could make that shot with out a back stop. Just watch some of his videos and look at how many balls this man hits I bet most of you cant hit a med size bucket! The blisters on his hands tells me he loved this game more then any other man I have seen that my friends is DEDICATION!
I've watched this video of Moe hitting wedge's so many times and I’m always so amazed. I tried to track each shot and the result based om distance to the hole, which is quite hard if you have watched the video. Here is what I came up with. 33 shots hit. 1@ 40ft 1@ 30ft 3@ 20ft 5@ 15ft 5@ 10ft 18 shots were less than 10 feet from the pin. Correct me if I am wrong! Moe was awesome!

Fair enough, I don't doubt his ability, its documented enough. Sometimes the mystery and legend of golf stories can get people carried away with the realism of it. Lots of people compare this guy to modern pros, I just think that's hard to do, such a different game now.
***** I think he's making fun of the fact the the green is sloped so severely towards the hole that the shots he hit past are rolling backwards when they would go >10 feet past on a flat green. So he's calling it sleeper spin, when in reality they chose this hole because the slope bring the ball back to the hole
Moes swing was a result of his mental edge ! He was pure genius !!! The fact he could recite poems and the relay his golf knowledge off the top of his head is just INSANE ! But beware copying his swing he would warn you not to try to do it ! Honestly he is the only that looks good doing it !
I had the opportunity to watch Moe Norman on several occasions hit golf balls at Royal Oaks GC in Titusville FL where he spent many winters. On one occasion hit approximately 50 balls with a 7 iron to a flag on the range. This flag was 145 yards from where he was hitting from that day into a slight breeze. Moe hit 95% of those balls within a 10 - 15 foot radius of the flag. Many were within 5 - 7 feet. Now for you naysayers I tried the same 50 balls and as a 4.1 index at the time I can tell you that from my own personal experience I achieved less than 25% within the same 10 -15 foot range. Moe was a genius although at the time he really didn't understand that he was. Moe was different with an odd golf swing that didn't fit into the mainstream theories about how one should swing a golf club. There are many ways to swing a golf club. Look at the swings of Trevino, Sneed, Hogan, Player, Palmer, Watson, Woods and Jack. Watch their videos and tell me that they are all the same. Nope you can't do it. They are all different as is Moe Norman. So just sit back and enjoy the video of one of the greatest ball strikers of all time.
Saw him in Titusville too & that range has signs showing yardages but Moe would hit shots at those signs calling how many bounces before the shot went under the sign & nearly every time he was right. So impressive!
From what I have read about Moe Norman, he was a bit of an odd duck and the PGA didn't really want him to be successful and be represented on the tour. He didn't like to fly and travel and hence he had relatively few tournament appearances. He probably suffered from a mild form of autism if what I have read is true. I believe that Titleist gave him a lifetime contract that paid him enough to be comfortable even though he wasn't playing on the tour. That swing is amazing and so consistent, thanks for sharing the video.

The pga wanted to suppress Moe because he didn't need a coach and they can't make money unless they constantly tell you that golf is hard and you will suck unless you get lessons. Moe had tremendous dedication and a positive attitude and that's all you really need to accomplish anything.

darvish2012 I don't think the single plane swing has much to do with it. May help some but in general it's how much you practice and what you practice that determines your ball striking ability. Moe practiced a LOT. I think he could have used any swing, single, double, triple plane whatever and got the same results. I think he was both talented and loved to hit golf balls. Moe goes through the hitting area like nobodies business, not even lee trevino i don't think was that flat through the hitting area. It's incredible. The single plane definitely makes his swing arc huge no doubt helping him get so flat for so long through the hitting area but he still has to swing the club properly, with tension free arms and body and not forcing it or hurrying it in any way like all of us amatuers do. IMHO opinion it's not about swing planes but it's more about losing the muscle induced pull from the top and all the tension in our bodies which seems to happen the second you set up to the ball lol. Take a look almost every amateur has the prefect practice swing which vanished the second they pull the trigger on the real one lol. It's hillarious. No amount of swing place induced theory is going to fix that issue I'm sure.
This is pretty impressive for his age and I love Moe . But a few years ago at the Australian open I watched , Scott , McIllroy ,Speith and a bunch of other pros in the practice area and they would have done this easy . I was amazed at how great the pros actually are . Not to take any thing away from Moe but the pros today with their modern swings are just as good if not better because they are more athletic But id like to see them do this well in their 60s like Moe . For me Moe is the King !!
johnathan wetherill Modern players are awesome. But clubs & balls get bet better & better. And instruction is more available and they keep learning. They learn from each other. Knowledge increases (Daniel 12:4 😉) . One good bet you can make about his detractors, no two: they are young, and they are uninformed.
Better equipment, more standardized training, modern knowledge on knowledge and diet to maximize performance, most pros had a golf mentality drilled into their head since they were young kids. It's not as much about what he did, but the insanely unconventional way he did it. Even in his contemporary, players like Nicklaus and Palmer could probably do this as well. He may have had a more robotic consistency, but they had more power, a greater variety of shots, and likely a better short game, not to mention great consistency themselves, if a slightly larger variation. His accomplishments are most highlighted by his unique methods.
i saw Moe years ago in Oshawa, he would not hit in front of the stands, he took his towel and wet it in a puddle , asked us to form a horseshoe around him and proceeded to hit a giant bucket of balls. He could call out the direction and distance of each shot. A wonder to see.
Average Tour player hits a 70-yard shot from the fairway to about 16 feet. I think he found his groove and that helped him hit the shots close. But, he is hitting most of those shots inside 8-feet and more like inside 4-feet. From a 70-yard shot perspective..and given his age...this was an awesome display. I just think people have these fallacies about Tour players and how close they hit the ball to the cup from this distance.
He's a legend. He's what, 60 or more here? If someone, a caddie or a mentor or whatever, had of really helped Moe Norman integrate into the PGA (and if the golfing establishment hadnt been so callous), imagine how many Majors this guy could have won?
Totally agree. I played 50 + rounds with Moe, he was the real thing, Brandel Chambly just rnentioned his name about an hour ago. It was a different game then, more want for accuracy..

I just can't believe it some people tried so hard to discredit his talent. If he wasn't strike the ball perfect it would more likely roll over the green. You saw that even these balls has very low trajectory it still came down soft and let the nature sloped to take care of.
I'd fancy most tour pro's to be able to duplicate this from that distance, with that amount of green and with the slope bleeding balls back to the cup. However, it's an impressive display, especially at the age Moe was when he did it.
The current leader as of this comment on the PGA tour from 100-125 yards is on average 15', 8" from the hole. Also consider the ball he was hitting here vrs what they play today. Huge difference.

Tiger knows he don't "own" his swing like Moe did and he, along with 99% on Tour don't really know or own their swings the ways Moe owned his! Fairways and greens hit stats show/say it all! None on tour today, I'd be willing to bet, even come close today as what Moe's records would show his stats were!
In this vid Moe doesn t seem to have the straight plane look on his lead side. His address seems 2 have a slight V in it which indicates a deviation from the swing plane. (Hands closer 2 the body as in conventional setup. ????????
The incline at the back does not mean its an easy shot. You have to use it correctly. What you think you can just line drive the ball a hundred miles an hour and the incline will put it by the pin. Moe is the guy that the pros stop and watch when hes on the range>> yes he was that good. That was certainly not the most difficult shot I can think of but the way he did it at that pace and at that age was simply amazing. Jack Nicklaus can not duplicate that performance at the same age and pace!
So many great golfers in this CZcams comment section, assuming everyone talking about the slope in the back of the green can also hit that many balls as close as Moe did. What Moe displayed here was impressive, leave it at that.

I have copied MOE in my own way. I looked at Moe's swing and tried to come as close as I could. I am playing the best golf of my life. Some would say it is not the same. The results are working better than the million instruction teachers on YOU TUBE. I don't finish way up in the air like MOE. One of best things I have don't is hit at least 3 buckets of balls every day. Remember Hogan saying get in the dirt or something close to it! That made me improve as much as anything. I am winning avg 4 scats a round with my group.
yep Hogan said the secret is in the dirt, meaning you have to hit a lot of balls! Just like Moe always said, "a great golf swing can never be bought or stolen, you have to earn it!"

Moe was a good golfer. I think alot of this stuff is just hype to sell something or for teachers to garner interest in people to keep their schools alive. I'm going to put it simply Moe was an original and did alot of stuff his own way. His style is his own and even he admitted that it shouldn't be taught to others. I seen him say that in context on another video. The main problem with his hitting style is distance. That type of swing lacks distance and it would be tough for most to compete on a decent size course. Someone like Bryson who his very athletic can squeeze a decent amount of distance but if Bryson hit the ball with more of a Hogan swing he would add 20 yards minimum on his drives. Moe seemed like a real fun guy and God rest his soul. There are better ways for the majority to hit a golf ball in my opinion.

tremendous ball striking. 17 hole in one's, 9 double eagles and he shot 59 three times once when he was in his sixties. unbelievable

Moe is an absolute legend. Even at his old age he could still drive 300 yards straight as an arrow. In his prime he would call his distance and the ball would go exactly that. Nobody else is better than Moe Norman, the goat of golf.

Look at the shot hit at 3:22. It is rolling forward then slows and rolls backwards 5 feet! Look again st 4:45, the green must be incredibly sloped back to front. If he lands then anywhere within 25 feet of the hole, the heavily sloped green automatically brings it to within 10 feet. Most tour pros can hit a land a ball within 25 feet from 70ish yards, calling him the best ballstrikier of all time is hilarious.

I seen lot post here talking out of there butt's.With the clubs and golf ball's they had back then and being in his age
not many people could do this shot I promise you he could make that shot with out a back stop. Just watch some of his videos
and look at how many balls this man hits I bet most of you cant hit a med size bucket! The blisters on his hands tells me he loved this game more then any other man I have seen that my friends is DEDICATION!

I've watched this video of Moe hitting wedge's so many times and I’m always so amazed.
I tried to track each shot and the result based om distance to the hole, which is quite hard if you have watched the video.
Here is what I came up with.
33 shots hit.

18 shots were less than 10 feet from the pin.

Fair enough, I don't doubt his ability, its documented enough. Sometimes the mystery and legend of golf stories can get people carried away with the realism of it. Lots of people compare this guy to modern pros, I just think that's hard to do, such a different game now.

So he's calling it sleeper spin, when in reality they chose this hole because the slope bring the ball back to the hole

Moes swing was a result of his mental edge ! He was pure genius !!! The fact he could recite poems and the relay his golf knowledge off the top of his head is just INSANE ! But beware copying his swing he would warn you not to try to do it ! Honestly he is the only that looks good doing it !
I agree don’t try to copy his swing but learning the single plane swing from Kirk Jung videos on CZcams have done wonders for me.
I had the opportunity to watch Moe Norman on several occasions hit golf balls at Royal Oaks GC in Titusville FL where he spent many winters. On one occasion hit approximately 50 balls with a 7 iron to a flag on the range. This flag was 145 yards from where he was hitting from that day into a slight breeze. Moe hit 95% of those balls within a 10 - 15 foot radius of the flag. Many were within 5 - 7 feet. Now for you naysayers I tried the same 50 balls and as a 4.1 index at the time I can tell you that from my own personal experience I achieved less than 25% within the same 10 -15 foot range. Moe was a genius although at the time he really didn't understand that he was. Moe was different with an odd golf swing that didn't fit into the mainstream theories about how one should swing a golf club. There are many ways to swing a golf club. Look at the swings of Trevino, Sneed, Hogan, Player, Palmer, Watson, Woods and Jack. Watch their videos and tell me that they are all the same. Nope you can't do it. They are all different as is Moe Norman. So just sit back and enjoy the video of one of the greatest ball strikers of all time.
Saw him in Titusville too & that range has signs showing yardages but Moe would hit shots at those signs calling how many bounces before the shot went under the sign & nearly every time he was right. So impressive!

From what I have read about Moe Norman, he was a bit of an odd duck and the PGA didn't really want him to be successful and be represented on the tour. He didn't like to fly and travel and hence he had relatively few tournament appearances. He probably suffered from a mild form of autism if what I have read is true. I believe that Titleist gave him a lifetime contract that paid him enough to be comfortable even though he wasn't playing on the tour. That swing is amazing and so consistent, thanks for sharing the video.

The pga wanted to suppress Moe because he didn't need a coach and they can't make money unless they constantly tell you that golf is hard and you will suck unless you get lessons. Moe had tremendous dedication and a positive attitude and that's all you really need to accomplish anything.

darvish2012 I don't think the single plane swing has much to do with it. May help some but in general it's how much you practice and what you practice that determines your ball striking ability. Moe practiced a LOT. I think he could have used any swing, single, double, triple plane whatever and got the same results. I think he was both talented and loved to hit golf balls. Moe goes through the hitting area like nobodies business, not even lee trevino i don't think was that flat through the hitting area. It's incredible. The single plane definitely makes his swing arc huge no doubt helping him get so flat for so long through the hitting area but he still has to swing the club properly, with tension free arms and body and not forcing it or hurrying it in any way like all of us amatuers do. IMHO opinion it's not about swing planes but it's more about losing the muscle induced pull from the top and all the tension in our bodies which seems to happen the second you set up to the ball lol. Take a look almost every amateur has the prefect practice swing which vanished the second they pull the trigger on the real one lol. It's hillarious. No amount of swing place induced theory is going to fix that issue I'm sure.

This is pretty impressive for his age and I love Moe . But a few years ago at the Australian open I watched , Scott , McIllroy ,Speith and a bunch of other pros in the practice area and they would have done this easy . I was amazed at how great the pros actually are . Not to take any thing away from Moe but the pros today with their modern swings are just as good if not better because they are more athletic But id like to see them do this well in their 60s like Moe . For me Moe is the King !!
johnathan wetherill Modern players are awesome. But clubs & balls get bet better & better. And instruction is more available and they keep learning. They learn from each other. Knowledge increases (Daniel 12:4 😉) . One good bet you can make about his detractors, no two: they are young, and they are uninformed.
Better equipment, more standardized training, modern knowledge on knowledge and diet to maximize performance, most pros had a golf mentality drilled into their head since they were young kids. It's not as much about what he did, but the insanely unconventional way he did it. Even in his contemporary, players like Nicklaus and Palmer could probably do this as well. He may have had a more robotic consistency, but they had more power, a greater variety of shots, and likely a better short game, not to mention great consistency themselves, if a slightly larger variation. His accomplishments are most highlighted by his unique methods.

i saw Moe years ago in Oshawa, he would not hit in front of the stands, he took his towel and wet it in a puddle , asked us to form a horseshoe around him and proceeded to hit a giant bucket of balls. He could call out the direction and distance of each shot. A wonder to see.
Average Tour player hits a 70-yard shot from the fairway to about 16 feet. I think he found his groove and that helped him hit the shots close. But, he is hitting most of those shots inside 8-feet and more like inside 4-feet. From a 70-yard shot perspective..and given his age...this was an awesome display. I just think people have these fallacies about Tour players and how close they hit the ball to the cup from this distance.
He's a legend. He's what, 60 or more here? If someone, a caddie or a mentor or whatever, had of really helped Moe Norman integrate into the PGA (and if the golfing establishment hadnt been so callous), imagine how many Majors this guy could have won?
Totally agree. I played 50 + rounds with Moe, he was the real thing, Brandel Chambly just rnentioned his name about an hour ago. It was a different game then, more want for accuracy..

I just can't believe it some people tried so hard to discredit his talent. If he wasn't strike the ball perfect it would more likely roll over the green. You saw that even these balls has very low trajectory it still came down soft and let the nature sloped to take care of.

The current leader as of this comment on the PGA tour from 100-125 yards is on average 15', 8" from the hole. Also consider the ball he was hitting here vrs what they play today. Huge difference.

Tiger knows he don't "own" his swing like Moe did and he, along with 99% on Tour don't really know or own their swings the ways Moe owned his! Fairways and greens hit stats show/say it all! None on tour today, I'd be willing to bet, even come close today as what Moe's records would show his stats were!
You may think this is easy because it is the same shot over and over.. but this is extremely difficult to hit this shot consistently in birdie range.

In this vid Moe doesn t seem to have the straight plane look on his lead side. His address seems 2 have a slight V in it which indicates a deviation from the swing plane. (Hands closer 2 the body as in conventional setup. ????????

the correct way
The incline at the back does not mean its an easy shot. You have to use it correctly. What you think you can just line drive the ball a hundred miles an hour and the incline will put it by the pin. Moe is the guy that the pros stop and watch when hes on the range>> yes he was that good. That was certainly not the most difficult shot I can think of but the way he did it at that pace and at that age was simply amazing. Jack Nicklaus can not duplicate that performance at the same age and pace!

I have copied MOE in my own way. I looked at Moe's swing and tried to come as close as I could. I am playing the best golf of my life. Some would say it is not the same. The results are working better than the million instruction teachers on YOU TUBE. I don't finish way up in the air like MOE. One of best things I have don't is hit at least 3 buckets of balls every day. Remember Hogan saying get in the dirt or something close to it! That made me improve as much as anything. I am winning avg 4 scats a round with my group.
yep Hogan said the secret is in the dirt, meaning you have to hit a lot of balls! Just like Moe always said, "a great golf swing can never be bought or stolen, you have to earn it!"

Moe was a good golfer. I think alot of this stuff is just hype to sell something or for teachers to garner interest in people to keep their schools alive. I'm going to put it simply Moe was an original and did alot of stuff his own way. His style is his own and even he admitted that it shouldn't be taught to others. I seen him say that in context on another video. The main problem with his hitting style is distance. That type of swing lacks distance and it would be tough for most to compete on a decent size course. Someone like Bryson who his very athletic can squeeze a decent amount of distance but if Bryson hit the ball with more of a Hogan swing he would add 20 yards minimum on his drives. Moe seemed like a real fun guy and God rest his soul. There are better ways for the majority to hit a golf ball in my opinion.
Philip, it always amazes me that people think golf is such a complicated game,take any person with average atheletic ability and teach them Moe s swing, they will be enjoying the game, thus the thousands of so called pro teacher's would be looking for a new scam..
