I voted for Brexit as a protest, in response to Whitehall ignoring the North after 2008. I felt leaving the EU would be chaos and the government would never let it happen. But the 3 amigos Cameron, Farage and Johnson crapped themselves afterward like the cowards they are. I am the fool and paying for it.

@@axelusul Why, thank you sir. Not sure if you were being slightly sarcastic but I’m feeling happy and positive. May I say you weren’t a fool for voting the way you did, the problem is with the way ‘brexit’ was delivered. The withdrawal negotiations were conducted by like you say, a bunch of simpering cowards who treated the entire thing like a damage limitation exercise. Anyone with an ounce of business nous could see exactly how that was going to end up.
An old school proper left wing Labour government would’ve made a far better job of it. Yes, I’m old enough to remember when Labour campaigned to leave (partly due to the undercutting of wages and cheap migrant labour that free movement of people brings, and most so-called lefties are in favour of these days, strangely) and the Tories wanted us to remain (for the same reason!)
I don’t recognise the Labour Party anymore, and I despise them just as much as the Conservatives.

You can't sell a neoliberal organised labour crippling free trade zone as a socialist ideal. You can't sell it as anything other than a sack of shit that socialists have always wanted out of. I could not, and will never, forgive what was done to Syriza and the Greek people. Most of the 2017 manifesto would have been impossible if we weren't getting out. Free movement of capital and labour only hurts working class power, helps businesses run away from and so veto taxation and regulation, and freedom of establishment requires contracting out of public services to enable market access for companies from across the bloc. Inasmuch as we want to end all, that, rebuild union stength and force up workers' pay as a share of business costs and GDP, we couldn't do any of that without getting out, and then there's the risk of getting dictated to like Syriza was, and having cabinet changes and government changes imposed like has happened to Italy twice in the last few years, to stop them ending austerity.

    • @robbiecoleuk

@@patrickholt2270 As one of the main powers in the bloc with major opt outs we absolutely could have done a lot more to address your concerns within our own shores without needing to leave completely - and had we stayed we could have helped to drive improvements across the board where we saw problems. What boggles my mind is that Tory and Labour leavers both believe absolutely that we had to leave to be truly sovereign - just for diametrically opposed reasons that leave someone like me (historically Labour / Lib Dem >strong< Remainer) with no obvious political home any more. From my own experience, I worked in DE for two years and have spent probably another year of my life in total travelling and working across the EU, CH and Nordics. You talk about pay and workers rights etc needing to be improved - look at the EU working time directive, or how Germany handles Unions, Workers' Councils, holidays and unemployment benefits. Look at the strength of the unions in France and their retirement age, working benefits etc. It's just >not true< to say we had to leave to make things better for the workers in this country - we've elected govs who are turning us into the US-lite, that's never been the fault of the EU.

Jeremy Corbyn voted for Britain to leave the European Economic Community (EEC) in the 1975 European referendum.
Jeremy Corbyn opposed the creation of the European Union (EU) under the Maastricht Treaty - speaking and voting against it in Parliament in 1993. During the 2016 referendum campaign, Left Leave highlighted repeated speeches he made in Parliament opposing Europe during 1993.
Jeremy Corbyn voted against the Lisbon Treaty on more than one occasion in Parliament in 2008.
In 2010, Jeremy Corbyn voted against the creation of the European Union’s diplomatic service.
Jeremy Corbyn voted for a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU in 2011 (breaking the Labour whip to do so).
In 2011 Jeremy Corbyn also opposed the creation of the EU’s European Stability Mechanism, which helps members of the Euro in financial difficulties. (This vote is a good example of how Corbyn votes with hardcore Euro-sceptics. Only 26 other MPs joined him in voting against, and in their number are the likes of right-wing Euro-sceptics such as Peter Bone, Douglas Carswell, Bill Cash, Ian Paisley Junior and John Redwood.)
Jeremy Corbyn opposed Britain’s participation in the EU’s Banking Authority in 2012.

If your British identity doesnt transcend the current state of politics its not worth having.
Voting is useful as a strategic act to mitigate harm. If i wait around for a party that is going to perfectly align with all my ideals i will never vote. There are other ways to engage in democracy, yes, but when you have an unusually dangerous prospect as a candidate you also have a responsibility to prevent the harm that they are attempting to instigate.

Slight problem - your thesis doesn't stand up in reality. Voting in a two party system changes nothing if those two parties only listen to oligarchs, and not The People. This is why populism has reared its ugly head. I suggest that you read Loneregan and Blyth's book "Angrynomics" to better understand why cynical politicians and oligarchs together with a threatened media have conspired to hijack our political process for their own ends, and in the process effectively nullify democracy.

Interesting point about the talk of the 'blitz spirit' and the way WW2 language has been used a lot by the papers in the pandemic. To have lived through the blitz and have any awareness or memory of it you'd have to be 90+ now. I think the papers are speaking to a lot of 60-90 year olds that grew up in the years following the second world war, kids who would have seen a lot of movies like The Dambusters and played with toys based on tanks, spitfires etc. I think this language almost has a nostalgic link to their childhood for many of them.

It would be easy to pass it off as that yes, thing is those who talk British pride have already had that discussion and distanced themselves from mere 'Spitfire Nationalism' (yes it has a name) and concern themselves more with our capacity to cope, absorb, trade, build, our sense of fair play, our part in abolishing transatlantic slavery, our sense of infra-structure, organisation, etc. literally all the things we're respected for the world over and what draws people/s here, I'm proud of my culture for all these things, I don't want to go conquer anyone but I'm also not shy of the brutal reality of the times of conquer or be conquered, sure WW2 exhibited all those aforementioned traits along with that 'stiff upper lip' but the romanticism depicted in movies was just propaganda of the time, I think people who find patriotism petty perhaps don't realise we've made that distinction, we're not twats tearfully saluting a flag before bedtime lol we've just joined plenty of self-evident dots, what we were taught at school, what tv, music, literature has thrown at us, how all of it has cultivated us to hate ourselves, feel shame and prostrate ourselves, manyof us have seen through it, and now we see our black and brown friends and family being turned against us too, 30 years ago we were all raving together in a field together (best of British :)

I have close Friends who voted Leave, and Remain. I was disappointed to hear Jason`s comments, cos i love the Fella. I just found it odd. I watched a lot of Political program's,such as Question Time,This Week, etc, and all i heard was how bad the EU were. For a decade at least. Then all that seemed to be forgotten. I don`t truthfully now what the future holds, but i have heard the opinions of Friends on either side, and they are well thought out opinions, not fuelled by Xenophobia. Some parts of the UK were affected differently to others. I have worked for companies where i was the only english guy. The guys working there could barely speak a word of english. The supervisor was from their country,as was the manager. When i needed help in performing my tasks,i had nobody to go to. Other companies had a mix of nationalities, and English became the language we conversed in. Other parts of the UK did not have such a massive influx of foreign citizens, hence their attitudes would likely be different. I am of the mind that a democratic result should be respected. I was convinced that Remain would win the result. I can see both sides of the argument and i feel Jason is being unfair to a lot of people,by lumping them in with those who hold toxic views. I bet at one of their gigs,it would probably be a 50/50 split. The Band hold strong viewpoints and the majority of their audience are on board with that. Dont insult them in this way. It`s possible to be a remainer, without thinking all leavers are Cunts, and vice versa. I met the Band, and they were both absolute Gents. I remain a massive fan,but using a word like Hate, saddened me.

Maybe they should read 'Small Is Beautiful': A Study of Economics As If People Mattered is a collection of essays by German-born British economist E. F. Schumacher. The EU is just a bloated parasitical bureaucracy, so is Westminster and so is the House of Lords. But the bigger a bureaucracy gets the less accountable it becomes, the EU is opaque, there is no transparency. We as individuals had less say in the EU than we have at Westminster, which isn't much but at least we can vote them out. There is no 'WE', the myths that are promulgated by many parties is that 'WE' will have control if we vote for them, no 'WE' wont. The people that are politicians, local, national and international are all about themselves; it's totally naive to believe that someone else will represent your interests. Its the same beans in the can, no matter what supermarket you buy it from. Jason Williamson makes interesting music but his political opinions just sound naive. The EU are not as beneficial and as altruistic as an organisation that he thinks it is, the EU has for decades controlled Africa through detrimental trading tariffs, one of the reasons why it's an impoverished continent and also why so many are fleeing it. If the EU eventually becomes One State then we will be in bother, because with so much power it can ignore its population. And all it takes is either an extreme right or left wing group to control it and we are looking either Nazi Germany or Soviet style Russia in control. You know what the say about left and right, eventually both wings touch in a circle. 'Why would you be proud of being British?' Nationalism/patriotism “ does nothing but teach you to hate people you never met, and to take pride in accomplishments you had no part in.” And that's what the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany used and the EU could do the same if whoever is control decided to use that tool, but the bigger something is the more effective it is, the voice of decent is easily squashed, just look at China.

I can tell you this for sure, leaving the EU has done fuck all for the working classes, it somewhat benefits some of the middle classes and mostly benefits the upper classes, absolutely nothing about it benefits the working class.

@@Tonysss131 very true. It must be galling that the political force that makes such a large part of his persona no longer represents the English working class ( ie. Him) and now stands for that demographic he despises. He doesn't go this far but does concede there is no-one left for him to vote for, but it's tantamount to the same. Essentially, I think he's going to have to address this in his message or become a repeating record, banging on about a set of injustices that no-one remembers or even cares about. Members of the public arent repsonsible for the ruling party's cabinet picks. Gove is not popular. I would say 'loathed' but there are cabinet members who are less popular.
'Why do so many of your people believe what they read in the tabloids' --- How many is 'so many' and where are you getting the data to compare them so unfavourably? As far as i can tell. that's a universal problem. It's also true that the British public are sceptical of the tabloids.
Where is this 'intelligence' data? i know of a happiness index that we do shit in, not aware of an intelligence index.
Is this the case for the prosecution? lol. Who says that having had an historical empire prohibits you from enjoying your national identity and/or being proud of it? Each person gets to decide what a British (or whatever) identity means to them, and each person gets to decide if they want to pick up the baggage of dead people. It's important to know your country's history, and to acknowledge wrongdoing and mistakes, and to resolve not to repeat them, but to ask people to pick up other peoples burdens as their own is inhumane. To brainwash people into any particular narrative about what being a certain nationality has to mean is abusive. People get to decide today what their national identity means to them, and the story they will tell themselves (it can only ever be a story) that will either create something better, or leave you wallowing in your own self effacement.
We have much to be proud of, in our history and our culture. The labour, feminism and civil rights movments are all movements that were fostered in Britain. We have much to be proud of in the political/social sphere, as well as plenty of others. I've never heard the term 'British exceptionalism' before, so i'm not sure what that refers too. Are you talking about influence?
I dont have a problem acknowledging that Britons, and those who represent them, have done harm and do harm, but i wont take on a useless sense of shame with the delusion that that can absolve the people of the past, or is necessary to create a more positive present, or future.
