I have been listening to various versions of this song over the past 48 years. This is, in my opinion, the sincerest and most beautiful incarnation out there.
I agree...I love her style and the arrangement but the substance of the words are revealed here in a way that vibrates with me very much...

There are so many covers of this song, Streisand's version is amazing but this cover is undoubtedly THE version which perfects every word, line and verse. Hearing this song and version from this year's Joker film enhanced that film even more than its amazing status
I know it's not about the Joker and Batman but listen to the lyrics and think of those characters. The first two verses especially.

Such a sad and hauntingly beautiful song. I remember watching the two Ronnie's doing a sketch to this song when I was a kid and it was so beautifully done. A real tear jerker.
Clowns are used as distractions for when something horribly goes wrong. In this case, a love story. In reality, something much more sinister. So yeah... They're already here.
Her voice haunted me. Beautifully sang.

Ironically, some years ago Lisa Hannigan was involved in a work and love relationship with an also very gifted musician, Damien Rice, when after their breakup, this song ought actually belong to Damien, whom doubtless could sing the definitive male version of this Sonheim classic.
